today i was sitting in the diesel cafe drinking my iced tea and eating my cookie (not that i was hungry, but i wanted a cookie), and the woman sitting next to me told me she liked my tattoo, guessed that it was flw and not mondrian (she went "is that mond - no, frank lloyd wright"), and asked me if fullmetal alchemist was the only manga i read. because, y'know, that's what i was reading. (i blame
sky_dark for the stacks of fma trades on my bookshelf. i'm sure she doesn't mind. :D ) so i said no and then got to pimp blade of the immortal which i highly, highly recommend to anyone who might be interested in kinda violent japanese comics set in the 18th/19th century but full of people with very contemporary speech patterns. and also with a lot of swords. and did i mention it was kinda violent? but i love it a lot and got to pimp it to a total stranger, which is always good, especially since she seemed receptive. and how often do i get to pimp comics to strange women? y'know? (she told me to read y, the last man. which i kind of want to.)
so that was a highlight of my day. also i went out for lunch with the family unit and we saw aurelia's oratorio which i can only describe as "a performance" and can't really be any more specific than that. there's a teeny bit of dance, some contortiony stuff, some vaguely aerialist acrobatics (with big red ribbons!), some fun stuff, some, i dunno, it's kind of like cirque de soliel in that it clearly has roots in circus performance but it's really not what you'd think of when you think "circus". i liked it. (aurelia ican'trememberherlastname is charlie chaplin's granddaughter. she's very good.)
on friday (i think it was friday, it might have been thursday)
astaria51 asked me some questions.
1. What's your favorite piece of writing (oneshot or complete series) that you've ever written?
not a soldier. there are a couple picky little things i'd change, mostly word choices, but it's one of the few things that i read now and think "yeah, this is pretty much exactly what i wanted to say, exactly the way i wanted to say it". i don't know if it's my favorite thing i've ever written - i mean, dude, i've written a lot - but i'm still super, super proud of it.
there's more of conrad and oskar's story than that, but i doubt i'll ever write it. i know what happens to them, that's enough.
2. Imagine the highlights of your life as a screenplay: now pick five songs for the soundtrack. What are they and where do they go?
forever young, alphaville - i go to israel for the summer
shippin' up to boston, the dropkick murphys - i move to boston (the dates don't jive, but whatever)
hallelujah, jeff buckley - i get my heart broken the first time (by a nice but immature english boy)
carry on wayward son, kansas - i discover spn and spn fandom
mr brightside, the killers - i get my heart broken the second time (by a nice but immature english girl)
...ok, so two of those are lowlights, but still.
3. What authors have been the most influential to you?
man, i don't even know. when i was in high school this anthology called bordertown hit me really hard, but i don't know if you can see its influence on my writing now. *i* can't see its influence now. also i picked up some tics from spn fic, back when i read a lot of it, but i couldn't point to specific writers. so basically i kind of suck at this question. >.<
4. If you had to pick somewhere to live other than where you do, where would it be?
london! or venice, even tho i don't speak the language. or san francisco. or possibly chicago. :D
5. Describe yourself as if you're someone else introducing one friend to another.
"this is cindy. she babbles. don't get her started on supernatural - no, really, don't, unless you have a free hour and don't mind being opinioned at - she sucks at small talk but she's a pretty good listener. also kind of a geek. also she's a writer but she's kind of reticent about talking about what she writes with strangers. she doesn't want to bore you, y'know? also she'll get offended if you start talking smack about new england, the southern us, liberals, or fangirls. but she's pretty open-minded. she won't judge you to your face."
("opinioned" is so a word. :D )
