happy birthday to peggin and azewewish, smart, sane girls in crazy fandoms (and in brenda's case, giver of plot bunnies). cupcakes? glitter? hot men to do your bidding? :D

I tried googling to see if there was a name for that kind of art (photos + paint) and all I got was hits about using Photoshop, LOL.
I did find this website - http://www.downtownlascene.com/index.php/scene/art_scene and there are a fair number of brief descriptions of various artists' works. (I know you weren't really asking for any help with this, I just got curious.) It seems like you could pretty much make up anything and it would be believable.
Loren Sandvik’s third solo exhibition, “Abominable Fancy,” which examines the intersection between drug abuse, a failed marriage and Tiffany lamps.
Opening reception for “Shut Up and Keep Swimming,” a group exhibition grappling with the psychological fallout from the effects of a dystopian society.
i kind of was asking for help, in a very roundabout way, so that link is really, er, helpful. thank you! if nothing else, it's definitely worth a giggle. i mean, one of the artists, his part of the show is called hubris cream. heee. but also, ew. i kind of need to be able to at least sort of visualize the art in question, tho, so i'll have to check out all those gallery web sites. oh, the hardship. hee.
(the kind of thing i'm thinking about is a little like photoshop, but on canvas. i've seen some spn fan art that's digital painting over screencaps or promo pics or photomanips, so you can kind of tell there's a photo underneath but the artist has done some painting as well. well, and there's also messing around with filters and textures and stuff, so you end up with something that looks like it could be a painting but in reality is pure photoshop. that kind of thing. but with actual paint and photos printed on paper.)
One general term for that is "mixed media" but it can apply to lots of stuff. It would definitely cover mixing paint and collage.
Now I'm actually imagining some nice works with ripped collaged photos and abstract spattered designs framing Mexican folk art influenced beefcake pinups drawings. I think you could get somewhere with the brilliant colors and high contast of Mexican folk art applied over B&W photos, some mergers of landscape/architecture pics and the painted human form.
this is all good to know. (i should mention this kind of thing to the flist more often. :D ) in that case i'm going with more guitar building for money and less guitar playing. he couldn't quite support himself doing it, which is why he had other jobs and why at first he was really grateful to the gallery owner for supporting him, but the gallery owner kind of discouraged him from spending all his time in his workshop, because you don't get to see a lot of your boyfriend if he's spending all his time in his workshop making things. plus the gallery owner is kind of a man of leisure and thinks of the guitar building as more of a hobby than a career. so there's some tension there. but the boyfriend did keep his workshop and all his tools and stuff, and kept in touch with his suppliers, and is now making noises about getting really involved in (re)building a business for himself, hardcore marketing and everything. some of which he did consciously give up or get away from earlier in the relationship. now he's starting to think it
( ... )
you're very welcome! here's to celebrating with good friends and cute boys and cake. :D
