two-player video games?

help me, obi-flist, you're easier than trying to navigate wikipedia. :D (it's true!) what are some good, fun, terrifically violent and exciting two-person shooter games for the xbox? that you can play by yourself or with a friend sitting next to you on the couch manning the other controller. (as opposed to playing online with a bunch of strangers.) are there also good two-person xbox games that aren't necessarily shoot-'em-ups but also aren't guitar hero?

er. you can plug two controllers into an xbox, right? maybe that's a dumb question....
