101 Goals Update - May 2009

May 20, 2009 19:09

Last year, I started a crazy task: complete 101 goals in 1001 days. It's been a year now, or 380 days to be exact, and while I'm nowhere near 38% done my 101 goals, I would at least say I'm not displeased with my progress. I'm at the point where there are goals on this list I know for sure I won't complete, but I'm still hopeful about others that are probably pretty unlikely. So if you're interested in the low-down so far, here it is:

FITNESS AND HEALTH
1) be able to do 20 pushups consecutively
I have completely not been doing anything fitness-y at all. I started going to the AC in October but then that failed when exams hit. I'm gonna try again this summer to do some resistance exercises regularly 3-4 days a week.

2) speak to a personal trainer about my weight and fitness
Much as I'd like to do this, I doubt it'll happen. Cuz I don't wanna pay the money for it. *sigh*

3) go rock climbing once
Being tentatively planned for my birthday next month - yay!!!

4) record daily food intake every day for one month and decide how I can improve my diet
Meant to do it back in July but never got around to it. Maybe I can convince myself to do it in June.

5) join a yoga class
Tried to at the AC and failed. I have another chance again come September; we'll see how my timetable works out. I should probably pay for an actual class instead going to the drop-ins.

MONEY AND SPENDING
6) not spend more than $250 for each of 10 months
5/10 down (May/June 08, Feb/Mar/Apr 09). But of course I blew my doubly-budget this month, between the Niagara trip and the constant eating out. *sigh*

7) save $5000 over the 1001 days (all spendings and earnings count toward this amount, except the money currently in GICs)
This looks more and more unlikely every day. I have no idea how I thought this would be possible. Oh right, the economy wasn't this terrible last April when I made this list.

8) be debt-free (re: student loans)
I had paid it off but now I'm borrowing more. See you again next May?

9) open a bank account at another bank (ie. not TD) and keep enough money in the account to waive the monthly fee
Yay for tax-free savings accounts, lol.

10) stay off eBay for 8 consecutive months, including browsing (looking at something that someone linked does not count)
lilzazu, don't worry, you didn't make me break this goal because of my very awesome clause: looking at something someone linked does not count. I think I'm starting the count from mid-January. So...4 more months.

11) buy a trenchcoat
A winter one in Buffalo, and a Spring/Fall/evening one at Jacob. = )

YARN AND KNITTING
12) have a net of more yarn used than bought over the course of the 1001 days (“used” can also mean given away/donated; starting with __ lbs of yarn)
I feel so proud for every time I think about yarn shopping and then don't do it. But even still I've given in enough times that I'm still failing at this goal currently. (It's cuz I end up caving for very-sale yarns, which of course means that I end up buying...not a small amount.) I can't decide whether or not to go with Adam's parents to the Spinrite sale this summer. I'll cross that bridge when I get there.

13) sell the yarn I don’t want (ex. on eBay) or donate it
Slowly and rock-ily going. But I'm not worried about this, cuz one day I'm just gonna give up and bag the damn yarn and drop it off anonymously at Sketch because I'm tired of how much space it takes up in my room.

14) spin at least ¼ of the roving I have now (starting with 7.67 lb of roving)
I'll be honest, I have noo idea how I'm gonna spin 2 lbs of roving if I keep insisting on spinning sport-weight. I'm only at 5 oz. This goal is most likely going to fail.

15) have a net of fewer UFOs (can get rid of UFO by frogging; starting number of UFOs: 9)
Technically I have a lot of UFOs right now just because I haven't woven in ends yet. So not including those, I think I actually only have 4 UFOs. Wow. (But including the yarn-ends, I have 9.)

16) finish a pair of socks using the Confetti yarn
Done. But the socks aren't great because my ribbing cast-off was terrible. And the socks are a little too big (aka my calves are too thin).

17) knit a top for myself (top = sweater, t-shirt, tank top, halter top, dress, etc. but does not include tube tops, capelets and other likewise accessories, or half-length jackets)
Once I fix the two tops I finished last month, this will be done. Must finish scarves so I can do this...

18) finish fixing white halter top
I have no idea what I need to do to convince myself to just sit down and do this instead of starting something new.

19) knit a second halter top in mercerized cotton
Working on it. Slowly. Back is done, 30% done the front, 0% done the edging and strap.

20) try a Noro yarn to see what the hype is
I bought 2 balls of Silk Garden Lite, but I have no idea what I want to do with it. I can't even decide on a scarf pattern (this is the most likely end product). Help.

21) knit 10 things to give to charity
Once the 4 HP scarves are done, that'll put the count up to 5. I love how this goal only says I need to make them, not that I have to actually physically donate them...

22) go to a spinning/fibre convention (can be a knitting convention that also features fibres)
Went to the KW Knitters Fair last September. I really wanted to go to Frolic, but I couldn't justify skipping a whole day of work to buy more yarn/roving I would likely not use for another 5 years. Unfortunately, Frolic and the KW fair are both on Saturdays, so unless I just suck it up and re-schedule all my piano students for a day, I won't get to go to another fibre con for a whileee. CNSF totally does not count.

23) find/make a tote bag for carrying knitting projects
You know what, I've found plenty of options. But I never use any of them. I just keep using ziplock bags in my purse/enviro-bag. I can't decide if that means this goal is pass or fail.

OTHER CRAFTS
24) finish Montreal pages of scrapbook
Man, it's like 90% likely that this will never happen. It takes so much space and so much time and effort to scrapbook that it just never seems worth it to me. I wish I had a room where I could leave out my scrapbooking stuff indefinitely, that would be so helpful. Alas, not, so I might never really scrapbook again...*cry*

25) do another 20 pages of scrapbook
Ditto re: above. Though I'm extra sad about the Montreal pages because I finished like 35% of them and planned another 25-35% of the pages.

26) finish wall-quilt and quilted pillow
Am I insane??? Both the quilt -and- the pillow??? I don't even know how to quilt. This one has fail written so big it'll cover up like 5 other goals at the same time.

27) finish butterfly cross-stitch
Hoping to make some good headway on this this summer, the knitting needs to be finished and put away first. I would say it's about 45-55% done. aka notgoodenough

28) finish sewing white skirt
I have no idea how to approach this one. I have no idea why I gathered the top without marking the hem first. The hem is never gonna be straight now. Maybe I can make it deliberately unstraight. Or not...

29) finish sewing dress with Tori
Toriiiiiiii!!!

30) set up an Etsy shop/sell something on Etsy
This was a wishful, indulgent goal. It'd be really nice, but highly unlikely.

31) make a jar of paper stars for myself
Too busy knitting/playing DS. Whoops.

LEARNING
32) get into Teacher’s College for a B.Ed or M.Ed (exception is if I decide for certain that I want to pursue a different route)
I'm going to OISE!!! York accepted me too, actually, very surprisingly. But I'm going to OISE.

33) get a TEFL certificate of any kind (ex. full certificate, online course, intensive course)
Very unlikely to happen. Because I just don't have the money.

34) read at least 4 chapters of Personal Finance For Dummies or an equivalent book
I had borrowed it from the library but I only got through Ch.1 before I had to return it. I was too busy reading Harry Potter and Quilting for Dummies last summer, heh.

35) learn about dark matter, enough to explain the basics to a friend
Not yet. I should read my notes on phlogiston again to motivate me.

36) learn to understand spoken Mandarin and to speak Mandarin (small conversations)
I can sing Tong Hua? Heehee. And yes, I finished the Mandarin course. And double yes, I got an A.

37) create desktop background for myself using Photoshop
Too busy knitting/playing DS to learn Photoshop. *sigh*

38) make 12 icons using Photoshop
See above. *more sighs* I did make...1? Maybe 2. I can't remember. But not yet 12.

39) learn to file taxes
Ugh, one day.

40) learn about a religion that is not Christianity or Buddhism
Again with the knitting/DS. Maybe someone should Wiki me a religion to get me started.

41) achieve a typing speed of 90 wpm (average of 3 tests), as tested on Facebook; current: 80 wpm
Lol, like I've been practicing. It's probably gone down a little now.

LITERARY PURSUITS
42) write a piece of (fan)fiction exactly 50 words long once every week for 2 consecutive months
Mmmmm, chocolateee.

43) write a piece of (fan)fiction at least 20 000 words long
I'm so sad, I even have a plot outline. Why haven't I started writing?!?!???!??

44) attempt NaNoWriMo
Maybe this year, but unlikely. Lots of ppl telling me I won't have time during B.Ed. Bah.

45) complete a short writing collection (like A Year of Two)
I have some vague ideas but not enough. Damn it.

46) finish reading the Harry Potter series
Let's not start, lol. Those last few books were quite hefty.

47) finish reading the His Dark Materials series
Still at it. Because I haven't been reading. Because I've been....you guessed it.

48) read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy
I should read more of this.

49) finish reading all MoR contest entries, up to Summer 2007 contest
I'm at 2003 only. Maybe I should save the TV-watching for cross-stitching and read now while I'm still knitting.

50) try to read some of the Bible
I haven't even finished Pullman yet. Heh...

51) attempt to read a philosophical work
See above.

52) read 2 novels by Canadian writers
And repeat.

53) listen to all of I Am America and So Can You audio book
I have no idea where I put this file. I really need to find it.

MEDIA ENTERTAINMENT
54) watch 5 Disney movies I haven’t yet watched
Still just at Prince of Egypt and Alice in Wonderland. 2/5

55) finish watching Smiling Pasta
I stopped at Ep 9 for some reason. Hmm.

56) watch all of Futurama
It was quite sweet = ) Even though I'm sure I missed not a small amount of the humour. Imagine how good it would be if I got it all. Oh man.

57) watch Monty Python and the Holy Grail in full, in one sitting
Finally, heehee.

58) watch all of Trigun and Cowboy Bebop
I really think these were quite worth watching. They're still on my harddrive.

MAINTENANCE
59) cut down current Unfamiliar Songs folder by half by either familiarizing myself with them or removing them (if I don’t like the songs) - list has 335 songs; new songs do not get added to this list
I'm at 223/335. I need to just be harsh and axe some songs.

60) figure out all songs from iPod from Laine’s playlist (and delete the ones I am not interested in)
Lol, I started, but then stalled because I couldn't decide if I liked some of the songs or not. This is nowhere near done.

61) sort video games music, including OC Remix music folder
Oh man, I don't think this will ever be done.

62) back-up all things important to me (in digital format)
In retrospect, this is tied to #64. And no, nowhere close.

63) sort all university photos and burn them to disc
Man, they're like 60% sorted, I don't know why I can't convince myself to just do it.

64) organize 250 gb harddrive
#62

65) rearrange my room at home
But it's still not clean, lol. I blame the yarn.

66) get rid of textbooks I don’t want anymore (donating counts)
I haven't even gone through my university notes yet. *collapses* I'll probably end up donating these along with #68.

67) organize MSN contacts - must know who every one of the listed contacts is after list is updated
I haven't done it yet, but it'll be quite easy to do, I'm not worried.

68) donate unwanted books from book box and bookshelf to Mississauga Library
I need to ask the library how to do this...

MUSIC PERFORMANCE
69) play a piano duet with someone (Heart and Soul does not count)
Must photocopy music for Liz.

70) learn to play the Pathetique Sonata (all three movements)
I started looking at the 1st mvt. I still like the 3rd mvt much more.

71) learn to play a Vienna Teng piece on piano (ie. sheet music)
They're not memorized, but I can play Lullaby and Gravity. Oh, I really want the sheet music book on the site!

72) create music CD (with Sage)
Yeah, never gonna happen. I should just mark this as fail right now.

73) sing at an open-mike night
We did karaoke, but it was in a room with friends. I need someone to come to open-mike with me. Too bad that time in Hamilton was way before this goals thing, lol.

74) be able to play my exam piece from Grade 10 at a level where I would be willing to let someone hear me “perform” it
Working on Pathetique currently. Though I did pull out the Scriabin too a few months ago. I still love it.

75) learn the flute part to an ensemble piece (ex. a flute-clarinet duet to play with Chilton)
Not gonna happen cuz I need to give the flute back to Laine/Irene. This is what happens when I procrastinate.

76) learn the flute part to Heart Throbbing Harmony to play with Jon
Boo.

FRIENDS ARE FAMILY
77) find a pen-pal/swap-pal and exchange at least 6 letters and/or items (6 from and 6 to)
I need to snail mail a few ppl at some point this summer. I can't remember what number I'm at with hellfire_angel - is it 2 or 3?

78) get a gift for a friend for no reason at all, twice a year (can be different friend or same friend, lol)
Last year and this year are both good. So it's onto 2010 (does 2011 count? It's just Jan of 2011...)

79) contact Sharmila somehow at least twice a year
Haven't failed yet = )

80) contact Bertha, Etta, and Kelvin somehow at least once every two months
We were at the Distillery District and Harbourfront on Sunday. Lots of walking, lol. And lots of random from Bertha.

81) reply to every one of Sage’s emails within 3 weeks
Emails? What emails? If this keeps up it's an automatic win, lol.

82) make Chilton add 15 songs from my playlist to his library that isn’t by his usual list of artists: Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Savage Garden, Backstreet Boys, or from Disney or The Simpsons
Done once, and with the mix-CD (once we burn it again), it'll be done again.

83) plant some of the pansy seeds from Ji
Lol, my mom asked me why I haven't given her the pansy seeds. I have no idea why I haven't.

84) email Kenneth at least once every two months while he is in Boston (provided he replies)
Still at it = )

85) meet with high school friends at least once (at least 3 different friends, together or separately; Laine does not count, and Ian doesn't count if with Laine)
I still think I left a word or two out of this goal, but it's too late now. And it's done.

MISCELLANEOUS
86) finish 5 DS games, including Ouendan (don’t have to get S on all, but have to beat it in all 4 difficulties) ("finish" means finish the story mode, doesn't mean completing 100%)

I finished Bomberman Land Touch 2 and The World Ends with You. I thought I beat another one but probably not. I'm 2 songs away from beating Ouendan, but I have to get A on both of them, that's the challenge. I've gotten A or S on all the other ones. I was working on Elebits but I stopped. I'm now playing Dokapon Journey and Rhythm Heaven.

87) read 5 articles from the newspaper (can be online) every two weeks for 3 months a year
One year left to go, lol. I've kind of become lax with the paper reading in the past month, back to napping on the subway now. Silly me.

88) learn to put on eyeliner
I'm slow but I can do it. And then my eyes and eyelids get upset within 2 hours and it gets smudgy. But before that it's on, lol.

89) learn to put on foundation
I don't even -have- foundation really...

90) make spaghetti from scratch
Not at home I'm not. Parents kind of scoffed at me when I mentioned it last year, plus we don't have a big enough -clean- clean surface for me to do it on. Or something like that.

91) collect $100 for a walkathon
Even though I had to bail on the walk itself. Or the climb as it would be.

92) try 3 new types of cuisine (aka. not Chinese, Japanese, American, French, Korean, or Vietnamnese)
Mexican, Ethiopian, and Thai. I love thai soups.

93) go on a blind date
Lol, I'm thinking the only way to actually go through with this is to advertise it to my friends as a serious thing. *hint hint*

94) print “Yellow brick road” t-shirt by Di
Liz and I on-again off-again remember about this. We really need to look up a place.

95) get a new LJ background, either by making it myself or getting someone to make it for me
razberrycreme and yggdriedi were at it, but then I think we hit exams and then we all forgot? Meep.

96) go to a popular music concert (ie. not orchestral concert music)
Um, haven't yet?

97) see a comedy show live
YukYuk's at Fallsview. It was pretty good, lol. Oh oh, and Whose Live will be in Mississauga on Oct 18th!!! *runs around in circles* If I don't get tickets to that I'm going to kick something really hard and destroy my toe.

98) wear my blue-green dress from Smart Set
This summer! Hopefully...

99) make a wish list with 50+ items on it
It's probably at 50 items, I just am not too sure how to count it, lol.

100) write a letter to myself to read on my 25th birthday (must write before Jan 1st, 2011)
Hmm, I should get writing.

101) dedicate at least one LJ entry a month to the progress of this list
Ironically this is the only one I've failed so far. Bah.

Finished: 20
Failed: 1

Mid-September of this year is the halfway mark, so...just keep smiling? Lol. = )
