you're shaking my confidence daily

so my orange interview did not go so well. i had to talk to three dudes, and they got progressively less kind. the first one, alan, was quite nice and helpful. he asked me tricky questions but gave me pens and paper to work them, and walked through my solutions with me. the second was our very own todd pinkerton, who was also nice but then sneakily asked me tricky questions woven into the conversation. the last one was by far the worst. there were no tricky questions, it was more like a mean-spirited quiz.

him: so you know java? why don't you tell me what a polymorphism is.
me: ... i don't know.
him: ok. describe an instance where you would use encapsulation.
me: um... i'm not really good at terminology.
him: encapsulation is like an interface in java.
me: oh ok. (i describe an interface, wondering why he didn't call it that in the first place)
him: tell me something you like about the lisp language that is different from java.
me: well i think the lambda construct is pretty amazing, that you don't even have to separately define a function to use it.
him: (skeptical look)
me: are you familiar with the lambda construct?
him: yes. you can do that in java too. well, i'm out of time. nice meeting you.

so i will not be a brilliant programmer, but instead an administrative bitch, or an expert on paris hilton and mary kate olsen.

in better news, we're going to guam in 29 hours. we won't get there for an additional 50 or so, but that's neither here nor there. we are going, and i will come back happy and brown. island girls do not care about unemployment.
