Fishies and Joshua

I had a very disturbing dream about being chased by a long purple fish who had a human face, purple feathers for eyebrows, red lipstick,  a thin black mustache, and who was always smiling. Needless to say I have a little bit of a headache today and am a little tired.

I got my ears pierced again today. Just a little over from my original piercings (Apparently I have small ears) Then I took a wrong turn walking home and got a little lost and ended up in a really rich neighborhood where every house had like three garages and a green house. I'll have to remember that if I ever want to seem rich.

Ivan is coming over tomorrow. He has wednesdays and thursdays off now. Maybe I'll bring over the Descent. Or maybe we'll watch one of the movies I left over at his house. He still has all my horror movies. We're going to watch all of them. Except for Ichi the Killer. But he watched Imprint! Maybe if he covers his eyes or something.

So I watched one of the movies I rented yesterday. It was called Joshua. Non spoiler summary: After the death of Kelby Unger's father (Who is in jail for murdering Kelby's sister) Kelby returns to Bisbee to plan his fathers funeral. Unfortunately, Kelby's child hood friend James has become a serial killer, luring women to his house to kill them. And there is one other horrifying secret waiting for Kelby to return.

The movie starts with us seeing a drunk girl stumbling around in a house. A young man enters an stabs her. She is then brought down to the basement and tied to a table, where the young man takes out a hand saw.

We then cut to another scene of a woman entering her house an opening her closet. Inside is her boyfriend. He asks her to leave and come right back. She does, and when she opens the closet again, he has an engagement ring. She accepts. The phone rings and the man (Who is the main character, Kelby) picks it up. It turns out that while in jail for murdering Kelby's little sister, his father has died. He then decides to put together a funeral back at Bisbee, his home town.

At a bar, we see the same young man from the opening scene writing in a diary. He picks up another girl. As she sits in the car, he goes to retrieve her purse from inside. She reads the diary and it ends up detailing a murder. She begins to panic, but he returns and knocks her out, driving back home. When he returns home, he ties her onto a table in the basement. He then begins talking to something with him saying that "Kelby is returning home to them." Some grunts can be heard from under the stairs.

When Kelby first arrives at Bisbee with his fiance, he runs into an old friend, Wally, the cop, who appears to be a little odd. After explaining to Wally why he has returned, he gets ready for the funeral. At the funeral, he meets his fathers brother, who is a bit of an odd ball (After opening a suitcase filled with knifes, he stabs the fathers dead body). After the brother leaves, Kelby's old friend James (The man who has been murdering women) comes in. Kelby gets apprehensive and says he has nothing to say to James. James then says "We missed you." and Kelby flees with his fiance.

When Kelby reaches his house, he tells his fiance he needs to check something out. Leaving her behind he goes to a place in the woods with some wooden remains. He picks up a plank that reads "Joshua" and has a small child's hand print on it. Wally appears out of nowhere and the two of them talk about the area and Wally says he goes there alot. Kelby then asks if Joshua is actually dead. Wally begins to act erratic and says of course he is and that he heard him die when the cabin burned down. Wally then accuses Kelby of being a murderer and the two get in a fit. Kelby locks Wally's hand on a handcuff that is attached the a board. He then points the gun and Wally, who then says he's just like his father. Kelby shoots, but misses. He then apologizes to Wally and leaves.

Kelby then arrives at James's house. He asks James what he meant by "We missed you." James then talks about how they were a family and Joshua was his son. Kelby pulls out his gun and a figt ensues. Meanwhile, in the forest, Wally has cut of his hand to escape. After this, we see Kelby running up James's basement stairs but being grabbed by two hands with claws from under the stairs. Kelby then flees the house.

Back at home, Kelby's fiance receives a package addressed to her in the mail. It is a film strip. She puts it in the projector and a movie begins to play. It shows three young children holding a baby. Then they paint a a sign that reads "Joshua". Then it cuts away to them burning the child with a hot iron strand. From the look on the Fiance's face, things only get worse. Kelby suddenly arrives at home and the fiance screams at him and wants to know what's going on. Kelby passes out. Kelby has a dream of James sitting in a tree talking to a young boy:

James: "Who are you?"
Boy: "A warrior of Satan."
James: "Who is Satan?"
James: "You are."

We then see a scene where James is dragging a body bag down into his basement. Then we get a view of the funeral parlor where Kelby's fathers brother has slit his wrists and is putting himself inside the coffin and shutting it.

Back to Kelby. When he awakens, he finds himself tied to a chair along with his sister, mother, and fiance. Wally is there and is playing the movie that came in the mail. He then demands that Kelby tell the story of Joshua. Kelby obliges.

One day when they were kids, Kelby and James took a short cut through an ally and find an abandoned baby. James says that they should raise it. So they do. It starts off great with the three kids (The other kid is Wally) doing everything that they should. They stay in a cabin in the woods. When Joshua's first birthday comes around, James decides to raise him as a "warrior of satan". James feeds him animals, and hurts him to sensitize him to pain. James even draws pictures of Joshua during class as a large monster. One such picture he labels  "the next level". He then files down Joshua's teeth into points and gives him claws.

Then Kelby's story is interrupted by a knock out the door. It's Wally's police partner. The next few minutes are absolutely hilarious. Wally and the officer have a normal conversation despite Wally missing his hand and being all bloody. The police officer mentions that somebody stole the body from the funeral home. The police officer then hears something from inside the house and goes inside. Wally kills him, kills Kelby's mom, knock Kelby to the floor. and asks Kelby to continue his story.

Kelby says that on Joshua's sixth birthday, they went too far. James brings a girl named Erika from the school over in a potato sack. The girl wakes up and screams, so James kills her and feeds her to Joshua. Kelby says he couldn't take it anymore, so one night he and Wally burned the cabin down. Then he and Wally burnt all the video evidence. Or so they had thought.

Wally teases Kelby's fiance by saying the only reason Kelby is with her is because she reminds him of Erika they are interrupted once again. This time by James, who is carrying an axe. He puts it in Wally's head, then takes Kelby's fiance saying that Kelby will have to come home to get her.

Kelby manages to break free and grabs a shot gun. After hearing his dead mothers voice calling him a horrible person, Kelby goes a little crazy with the shotgun and accidentally kills his sister.

Kelby heads into James house and heads to the basement where his girlfriend is tied up to a table. He is then knocked unconscious by something. When he comes to, he is lying on the couch upstairs. Hearing something in the kitchen he fears to be Joshua he searches for his weapon, but it has been taken from him. Out from the kitchen walks James wrapped in Kelby's fathers skin. James says that there has been someone waiting to see him. James gets up and heads to the basement. Kelby takes this opportunity to run to the kitchen to grab a knife.

Kelby prepares himself to face Joshua, but when James returns, it isn't Joshua, but a girl who is, according to James, "the next Joshua". The James reveal that the girl is Kelby's sister who was thought to have been murdered by Kelby's father. Turned out that after Joshua died, James took the sister from her crib and framed the father. The James reveals the real kicker: Kelby was the one who decided to keep Joshua, abuse him, feed him animals and humans, and make him a monster. Kelby had suppressed these thoughts and had always thought James was the evil one, when it was really him. Kelby wanted to create nightmares. It was Kelby who drew the picture that they used to base Joshua's appearance off of and he who had killed the girl. Kelby then speaks to his sister:

Kelby: "Who are you?"
Sister: "A warrior of Satan."
Kelby: " Who is Satan?"
Sister: "You are."

James asks if he did a good job raising her. Kelby pauses, then mutilates James with the knife. He walk over to kill his sister, but he drops the knife. The sister crawls over to James and begins to eat him. Kelby runs downstairs and starts to free his fiance. He gets one of her hands free, then he notices his sister followed him. He tells his fiance "It'll be alright, Erika.." (Which is the name of the girl he murdered in school) and begins to tie her back up. It appears as though the monster inside of him has won.

-----

I really enjoyed the movie. It had an interesting plot and the ending was pretty unexpected. It had a good build up to revealing the story behind Joshua. The acting was over all good and they didn't overdo it on the gore. The only used gore when the story really called for it not like Terror Tunes, Jesus, the amount of gore was so ridiculous. Plus it was put out by Fangoria, who also brought out Skinned Deep (Which is probably one of the best horror comedy's I have ever seen) And if Fangoria backs More gems like Joshua and Skinned Deep, I will be quite pleased.
