Chapter 17: Mayonaka no Serenade

Your tears pain me, they always will. Don’t turn away, don’t turn away now, you’ve come so much closer, closer to my heart. It’s really dark here. What happened to the moon? Is it really that deep into the night?  These demons that follow us, they know not the strength of Angels, worry not, you are safe.

You know, I feel like I’ve achieved something I truly wanted from the beginning. A new strength, a  strength to breathe… to live, a strength to dream… to believe. I can do anything with this strength, and I will do anything, anything to protect your smile.

Yuto looked around the lobby. It smelled strangely of tobacco and peppermint, old musky carpets and wooden furniture. He walked towards the tassel draped Victorian lamp and flicked a tassel playfully.

Suddenly a loud noise made him jolt upwards.

“What was that?” Daiki mused coming out of a daze.

“It came from the roof, I think,” Chinen suggested.

“Let’s go up then,” Yuto said. The others nodded. They rushed towards the staircase and ran up. They continued running till they reached the door that opened onto the roof. Ryutaro however stopped at the first landing.

The floor was well-maintained and it looked very familiar. Curious he walked slowly through the empty hallway listening to the rain outside. His shoes made soft thumping sounds as he stepped onto the old faded carpet. Suddenly a creaking noise made him stop dead in his tracks. A door was opening behind him. He gulped, turning around slowly. A hooded figure stepped out, its robe swishing behind it creepily. The way it walked gave Ryutaro goose bumps. There were two swords hanging on the wall in a fancy wooden case. He quickly withdrew one and threw the other towards the figure who caught it with frightening agility.

“If you want me, then fight, fair and square,” he stated firmly, ignoring how badly his hands were shaking. Swords clashed swiftly, but the opponent’s frightening strength was enough to dampen Ryutaro’s meager confidence. He was being pushed back and flinched as his own blade cut slightly into his flesh. He pulled away quickly dropping the sword and clutching his sprained arm. With a jerk the figure pounced onto him, pinning him to the floor. A scream escaped the boy.

“Hey, where is Ryutaro?” Chinen said looking around him. The three were drenched in the rain as they called out for their companion. They were alone on the roof, or so they thought.

“RYU….!”

Chinen’s sudden silence drew the attention of his two friends.

“Chi?” Daiki asked confused then gasped as Chinen fell, face forwards onto the floor. Behind him stood a hooded figure, holding a blunt object in a gloved hand. Three men appeared as well, one was armed. They looked extremely frightened and all had mild indications of assault.

“Alright boys, we know what you are, give in or else,”

Daiki clenched his fists, eyes on Chinen’s unconscious figure on the wet ground. He took a boxer’s stance.

“If he catches a cold, then you’ll be the one to pay,” he muttered through gritted teeth. Yuto was glaring at the hooded figure, his pupils altering their colour.

Ryutaro choked on his own saliva as he stared at the mangled ‘thing’ on the ground. He dropped his sword. He realized he was trembling. From within the pile of robes, a clammy, strange hand was visible. It was physically human, except very pale with bluish-purple veins clearly visible underneath the skin. He stared at his sword on the floor. There was no trace of blood. In no way could this be human, but it was out for now, of that he was sure.

The rain outside was getting stronger and the thunder made him jump.  He liked the set better, this place gave him the creeps. Moving away from it he ran to the last room down the corridor. For all he knew, there could be anything behind each door. But he had to look anyway. He had to look for Yamachan and fast.

Grasping the cold handle he took a deep breath before pushing the door open. Cold wind blew in his face from an open window. He looked around the room. There was a wooden polished table next to a large leather chair. The chair stood facing the window.

“This is just like the room Yamachan was in during the PV,” he wondered aloud. Suddenly a small squeaking sound made him jump. His heart was pounding and he shivered as the skin on the back of his neck prickled. The chair was turning around to face him, slowly. Ryutaro felt his heart stop in his chest.

“Don’t be so scared now… my Cherry.”
