Part 7 - The Doppleganger's Lament

Fly,

Sway,

Go all the way…

It took a split second…and there was light. A moment easily missed and all the doors were unlocked.

Cause I’m in the same frame…with you…

For a heart that was once broken by words, it was the end of the brief encounter with darkness.

For the sorrow and the anger reflected upon the smooth surface of a mirror just needed to be wiped away.

I still believe in your love,

A mirror can easily be cracked.

But it is not the same for a human soul.

As only words from the other heart were required to piece back all the shards of what was once…almost…completely shattered.

Tears fall vanish into the night.

“Yuto, hang on!”

Hikaru felt his hands shiver, not of the cold rain that blew in from the open door, but of the lifeless body of a friend that lay before him. Nevertheless, he gripped tightly the phone in his hand and dialed for the ambulance that could save him.

“He's been struck by lightning and there is no pulse!" he gushed into the receiver.

Yabu had both of his palms atop the younger’s chest as he continued giving him compressions.

“Yuto!” Takaki yelled hoping that his voice would reach the unconscious mind. Thunderstorms were frightening, but as he watched the eldest cry unabashed trying to get the younger’s heart to restart, he concluded that he had never ever been this frightened.

Takaki sighed at the sounds of approaching footsteps that he managed to hear over the rolling thunder. As if it was something his ears had been searching for desperately and had finally found.

Hikaru gasped shakily, more from relief than anything as Yuto coughed and began inhaling sharply. Yabu fell backwards limply as the medical staff took over.

Hikaru backed off as they lifted the lanky figure onto a stretcher, an oxygen mask over his mouth.

“I didn’t know you knew CPR?” Hikaru whispered as he supported a dazed Yabu.

“I’m the eldest of the group so the company made me learn just in case of an emergency like this, but it was my first time on a real person…and I hope the last.”

“Is he going to be alright?” Takaki asked as one staff approached them.

“I think the doctors can give you better info, although the other boy…,”

“Other boy?” Hikaru asked shocked, his voice a mere whisper.

Takaki peered out from the door that opened onto the roof and saw naught but the rain, the wet ground and the fence, a part of which was blazing red…probably where the lightning had struck it.

“Yes, the one we found in that room with all the broken mirrors,”

The three boys gaped at the confused staff just as Ryutaro shuffled up the flight of stairs, collapsing as he reached the landing. As Takaki rushed to his aid, Ryutaro looked up at him weakly.

“Ryosuke, the real Yamada Ryosuke.”

If I’m a sinner,

Chivalry show me the way to go.

“Something weird happened in this past week Kota, really weird,”

Yabu nodded silently, a slight frown deepening his features. Hikaru watched as Daiki and Inoo walked over to them, the soft sounds of their shoes amplified in the silence of the hospital corridor.

“The doctors say that Yuto was very lucky, because he obtained a slight electric shock which sent him into cardiac arrest-,”

“Car-what?” Takaki asked rather moodily.

“His heart stopped beating because of the shock,” Inoo explained patiently.

“They said that lightning kills people on the spot, but it seemed like the intensity was reduced to about 0.5 - 1.5 % (just an approximation), by the time it struck him, and the immediate CPR restarted his heart,”

“Burns?” Yabu asked reluctantly, his voice rather hoarse.

“Minor, they said the most visible is a tiny star-shaped spot on his neck,”

“I’m relieved, but again…weird,” Hikaru continued, burying his face in his hands.

“What about Yamachan?” Takaki asked anxiously.

“They say that he’s got very low blood sugar and was extensively dehydrated, as if he hadn’t eaten or drank anything for days,” Daiki said with a hint of a scowl upon his face.

“What?” Hikaru exclaimed bewildered.

“Yeah, he’s in a coma, but again, the doctors say that with all the medications and nutrition they’re providing him with, he’s recovering fast and might wake up anytime soon,”

“He seemed…quite okay just yesterday,” Inoo muttered in disbelief.

“I hope he gets up by tomorrow, it’s his birthday after all,” Daiki murmured wearily.

“The real Yamada Ryosuke,” Yabu mumbled, repeating what Ryutaro had said. He suddenly looked up at Takaki, remembering what
the brunette had told him about the boy not having a reflection.

“All the mirrors in the building were found to be broken after the thunderstorm,” Keito spoke, approaching them and taking a seat next to Hikaru.

“Maji?” Hikaru exclaimed astonished.

“Where are the others?” Yabu asked Keito.

“Ryutaro’s in bit of a shock and Chinen’s with him, Yuto’s and Ryosuke’s moms are with them too.”

“I wonder…,” Inoo hummed questioningly, taking a seat next to Takaki.

Yabu shut his eyes, trying to blot out all the confusing thoughts.

“What the hell happened with us in this past week?”

Takaki shrugged, averting his gaze to the floor.

“God knows Kota, only God knows,” he sighed in response.

The rain...he remembers being drenched to the bone, being cold and shivering of it. He remembers seeing the bright light, the heat and he remembers feeling the warmth of another hand in his.

He watched with wonder as the electrifying rays struck an invisible force above him instead of him and gazed with astonishment as it surrounded him in a form of a perfect sphere. He remembers the way Yamada had smiled as he held the globe around them with his bare hands, the way the star pendant of his had twinkled in the light.

“Yuto-kun, I’m going to take your advice now and now…everything will be alright again,”

Yuto gasped as the boy began to fade.

“Who are you?”

Yamada placed his arms around the other and held him close. Yuto stiffened, he couldn’t feel him anymore.
Then in a soft voice, the strange shadow of his friend whispered;

“Tasukete kurette, arigato,”

He remembers as the boy smiled at him for the last time, before he disappeared completely.

Yuto’s eyes opened immediately and he flinched as the brightness hurt his eyes. He waited patiently until he could adjust to the reasonably dim lighting of his surroundings. He found himself on a bed, a drip on his right arm and some medicated moist wool taped to a small spot on his neck. He frowned at the equipment around him and forced his aching body to sit up. The green curtains around his bed, the strong smell of medication and the silent sounds of rolling trolleys and soft slippers confirmed it.

He was in a hospital.

He reached down and adjusted his bed so he could lean against his pillow as he sat. As he did so, he caught a glimpse of the bed on his left. The messy hair upon the white pillow visible seemed familiar.

Two layers of curtain separated the beds. He reached out to slide the other curtain that was blocking his view.

After all, he was just curious.

But right when his fingers brushed against the curtains, they were pulled to the side and he gasped as he found himself under the scrutiny of deep, dark brown eyes.

He gulped.

The other boy’s face was so pale it was worrying. He had almost no colour left and his chapped lips were covered by an oxygen mask. He had a couple of things attached to him as well. Yet as his eyes met with Yuto’s…he smiled.

“You look awful,” he commented placing both arms behind his head as he rested against the mattress.

“Thanks for the info,” came the deep, throaty, slightly muffled reply.

Yuto closed his eyes. He knew he was smiling, no grinning. He felt so at peace for some reason.

“We almost died Yama-chan,”

“Who says that with a smile baka, you’ve lost it haven’t you?”

Yuto chuckled and turned to Yamada’s side, propping up his arm on the bed and resting his head upon it.

“What?” Yamada croaked rather irritated after bearing the continuous staring and the dazed smile the other had been giving him for a couple of minutes.

“It’s all good now right?” he asked calmly.

Yamada stared at him for a moment.

“When was anything ever not good?” he replied calmly, curling to his side and sighing deeply.

Yuto’s face lightened up.

“You are choo kawai!” Yuto exclaimed pinching his own cheeks to emphasize the point.

Yamada shot him a dangerously irritated look.

Chuckling, Yuto stretched his arm towards the other.

“Hi, I’m Nakajima Yuto,” he said with a friendly smile.

Yamada stared at the outstretched arm bemused, and it took him a matter of seconds before the confusion was replaced by understanding.

When it did, his eyes welled with tears.

He poked his own arm from under the blankets and smiled as he felt Yuto’s warm fingers wrap around his own.

“Yamada Ryosuke,” he replied pulling the mask off and almost choking on his tears.

Yuto beamed.

“Yorushiku Onegaishimass!”
