Chapter Fourteen - Nightmare Isle
“Yuya I have a bad feeling about this,”

“Hmm?”

The older of the two wrenched his gaze from the barbed wire fence that spanned the height of the rocky wall he wanted to climb. It had taken them a long walk around the beach to reach the base of the mountain before the others and he had discovered fenced areas. The wiring was inactive right now, he could tell and it seemed like the best way to start climbing the mountain. Other parts were too steep or too slippery. The forest was peaceful otherwise, the leaves were rustling in the breeze and they hadn’t encountered anything remotely dangerous until now.

“We’ll be able to climb fast Ryuu, don’t worry and there isn’t enough current to harm us,”

“Still, I don’t get why you wanna climb this mountain,”

“Hey, we’ll see things better from higher up, and who knows maybe we’ll find a way into their ‘top secret facility’…come on,”

“The way you sensed this fence… reminds me of a moth,”

Yuya scowled as Ryuu eyed the fence skeptically.

“What do you mean by moth?”

Ryu sighed and placed his hands upon the fence fearfully, when nothing happened he ignored the grin the older boy carved on his face and hoisted himself up, one foot on the wires, the other in the air.

“You’re like a moth attracted to light…or in your case electricity,”

Yuya made a face.

“Well, I’m an ikemen moth,”

Ryutaro rolled his eyes and waved a hand up towards the cliff.

“After you,”

Yuya nodded enthusiastically and started climbing, the younger boy close behind him. It took him a good ten minutes but as he reached the top of the fence he saw a smooth promontory, a break in the slope. He placed his palms upon the dirt and heaved himself onto the ground carefully.

Dusting himself he got to his feet, but a sudden surge through his being turned his stomach to ice and he turned quickly as he heard a loud crackle and a yell.

“Ryu!”

His eyes widened in disbelief as his hand failed to reach the younger boy’s outstretched one. Like a bad video playing in slow motion he watched his younger team mate fall upon the forest floor with a loud thump.

“RYU!”

Hikaru’s back slammed against the metal bars, his gut felt twisted in the most uncomfortable way. Heartbeat racing he wiped the sweat from his brow and shuddered at the laughter that echoed in the silent darkness. His torch was lying on the floor, he had dropped it in shock and the flames were slowly dying out.

“You should see your face!” the figure guffawed, pointing a bony finger at him.

“Oii, don’t just stand there…the light’s about to die…you don’t want it to get too dark down here,” he snapped turning serious again.

“Wha…what do you mean?” Hikaru stuttered turning to stare at the man’s shackled feet instead. His eyelid-less eyes were enough to give him a heart attack.

“I told you boy, I’m the dungeon keeper…the only one whose accustomed enough to light to be able to communicate with you directly, the rest of the inmates down here…they like the dark…and they don’t like to talk,”

Without thinking, Hikaru created a flame sphere atop his palm.

“You said there was nothing down here anymore,” he spoke, unable to hide the tremble in his voice.

There was no response but Hikaru could not bring himself to look up for fear of something even more terrifying appearing before his eyes.

“Why are you quiet all of a sudden,” he dared himself to say.

“You…you’re just like us,”

“What?”

Hikaru’s head had snapped up and the maniacal glint into those large round eyes that made his insides freeze. He could see all the unpleasant details of the dungeon keeper’s face. Of how there were patches of rotting flesh stretched over his skeleton.

“Now I know why you were thrown down here… you’re a failed experiment, just like the rest of us,”

“I wasn’t thrown in here, I came by myself,” Hikaru defended, looking down again.

“You’re an abomination…that fire you create may be...beautiful..but you know deep inside…you’ve been tampered with. You are no longer what you were born to be…and maybe…it’s not even a complete change…you are just somewhere in the middle…abandoned because you could not be what they hoped you would become…,”

“I said, I came here myself!”

The man chuckled.

“I guess I should make it official then. Welcome Hikaru…welcome to the home of the disposed, the cage of atrocities, the eternal prison for failed experiments… don’t hope for escape for there is none so let's just try and get along all right?”

Shaking his head wildly at every word Hikaru stumbled towards another closed door at the other end of the hall as the dungeon keeper pushed open his own door. The shackles hadn’t bound him to his cell but were just chains to limit his movement. Hikaru tugged the heavy door open to reveal another dark room but there was a sudden flash before his eyes followed by excruciating pain on his midriff, causing his flames to die out as his body was pushed to the floor. It was too dark but he could smell a horrid stench in the warm breath over his face and gasped as he felt cold bony hands around his throat.

His vision was fading but it was too dark he could hardly tell. His body was turning cold and the pain was numbing. The pressure around his throat was making breathing impossible.

He was terrified, terrified of the pain or of some gruesome thing that was to happen to him. He closed his eyes, wishing for an instant death. He did not want to, didn't want to feel the pain.

“Easy boys,” came the voice of the dungeon keeper in the dark. He heard groans and clanking of metal upon metal. Whatever was on top of him was pushed off and he gasped for air.

“There’s enough of your meal to go around,”

“Yuri! How much farther?” Yuto shouted, staring up at the branches. He frowned. The younger boy wasn’t on any.

Did he get left behind?

“Yuri? YURI?”

He started moving faster, climbing the ever increasing level of the ground, tripping over roots and slipping over moist dirt. The trees were growing close together the higher he moved and when he finally reached the pool of water that Yuri had mentioned would appear as an indicator that they were heading towards the fall, hoping that Yuri would have reached first and would be waiting for him…he was disappointed.

Yuri was nowhere in sight.

“Yuri…where the heck are you?”

~*~
“Daiki?”

Kei frowned as he squatted next to the younger boy who was on his knees, clutching his hair and eyes shut tight.

“Oh God…Kei…it’s terrible…it’s so so terrible…,”

“What is?” he asked worriedly.

“Everyone…,”

Both boys froze as they realized that there was another presence nearby but before either could move a group of 5 men in moss green clothing that resembled infection protection suits had besieged them. Each held guns aimed at their heads.

“Cooperate and your lives will be spared,” spoke one, voice muffled in his mask.

The boys exchanged wary looks. One of the men raised his hand, as if beckoning someone to come closer.

“We have them under our control Captain,”

Daiki felt a wave of dizziness and a mild throbbing in his temple. His heart grew heavy with dread as he realized why. He spotted a figure clad in black appearing from behind the tree. She gave him a cute smile, eyes glinting with happiness.

“You are underestimating them mister. I don’t like it one bit and back off… my Dai-chan needs room to breathe.”
