Chapter Ten -The Dark Side of Ambition

“It’s done Professor,”

Hiro Ishikawa took the glass vial from the gloved hand of his employee, smiling in satisfaction at the crystal clear fluid. He felt his chest brimming with pride, a sense of accomplishment flowing through his very veins.

Finally! The only equation that had left the puzzle incomplete was now solved without error. His lifelong work had been finally accomplished, and here it was sparkling so innocently in his hand. Hiyoshi Miyano had been a fool to abandon the project and run. It had been his brainchild after all! How could you just throw away something so precious?

The thought of his old friend brought a grimace to his face, unlocking a memory he was reluctant to admit he possessed. They had been working together since they were young men in their 20s; enthusiastic, ambitious…wanting to do something that could change the world, make a name for themselves, win a noble prize or two along the way.

His best friend and partner had been an intelligent man, not as intelligent as him but brilliant nonetheless and even better, determined. It was a routine research into a failed project that had spurred the idea.  Miyano saw in it the end to all diseases, a cure for his ailing son. He on the other hand, saw a new generation of human tenacious enough to adapt to the ever turbulent and changing nature of the planet.

He never understood what made Miyano drop the project so near to its completion, hide the formula and run away with his son. He even left his wife and daughter behind. He had pursued his friend, attempted to pacify him, remind him that his son’s life was at stake. But the fear in that man’s eyes was bewildering. He frowned as the memory came to him.

“Give me the formula then, let me work with it Hiroshi,”

“NO HIRO…stay away from it, trust me…it will do nothing but harm, we can’t go against nature of things Hiro…we can’t!”

“But it’s a cure!”

“It’s not a legit cure, the side effects…its crazy. It’s not the wonder drug we wanted Hiro. It’s Pandora’s Box and it shouldn’t be opened…ever!”

“Hiroshi, stop with this madness, you are freaking out for no reason…I can understand the stress-,”

“I’m not giving you the formula, there is no way you can have it, just forget about it,”

“Forget about it?”

Hiroshi flinched as Hiro grabbed him by the collar.

“It’s my life long work and you want me to forget about it?”

“I know it’s hard for you, it was harder for me…my son…I thought…please let it go Hiro, and I’m very sorry,”

Hiro stared in disbelief at the man’s retreating figure. A million things were running through his head but one voice was screaming clear. ‘I must finish this.’

“Where will you hide Hiroshi…and for how long?”

The man stopped in his tracks, sighing deeply.

“The boy under testing will not survive, I have destroyed the final formula…he is the only keeper of it…when he dies…so will the formula…that will be the end of it,”

“I don’t think so,” Hiro said quietly, eyes ablaze with madness. He grabbed a syringe from his medicine box silently and began to approach his friend.

“What do you mean by that?” came the response, a low dangerous tone.

“You’ve left hints in somebody else’s subconscious, someone who has inherited your talents in genetics,”

Hiroshi turned around swiftly, outraged but gasped as he felt a needle dig into the side of his neck.

His eyes widened at the smirk on Hiro’s face as the other drained the contents of his syringe into his circulation.

“Yeah, I’m talking about Sakura.”

He recapped the needle as he watched his partner collapse.

“Professor, the boys are here,”

Brought out of his thoughts he started, gaze falling upon his subordinates. Alice and Silver were sitting together, devoid of their usual sarcasm and taunts for each other. He followed their gaze onto the many screens and smiled as he watched the company of 8 boys and a woman huddled together on the west beach.

“Perfect…let loose the ‘security’ for every sector, it’s time we give the boys some trouble of their own kind oh and this time-,”

He narrowed his eyes at the duo.

“I want them gone for real, do not let a single one reach the base, the consequences for your failure will be your undoing, understood?”

Alice nodded getting to her feet. She marched out of the room with Silver on her heels.

They were joined by Suzuka in the hallway.

“Are you sure about this Alice?” Silver asked as the three began to walk abreast.

The girl sighed as Suzuka reached for her hand, squeezing it affectionately.

“Let’s give it all we got, who cares how it ends…we’re doomed either way.”

“This island is larger than how it appeared on the maps,” Yuri commented, eyes running up at the expansive rainforest before them, unconsciously gaping as his vision ran higher and higher, ending at what could be the peak of the green hill, dense storm clouds concealing its true height.

“We will have to split up,” Hikaru announced. He could see the uncertainty on the boy’s faces and then realizing how stern his own face was he fought against the cramped muscles and grinned widely.

“Oh come on, you guys can’t be scared to go in there all alone now?”

“Oii, we’re not scared! It’s just…how will we find each other?” Yuya retorted, looking genuinely troubled.

“Don’t worry guys, as long as I’m still alive we can all communicate with each other through our minds, I won’t be able to keep us all linked at all times but any one of you guys can link to me whenever you want and I’ll know when to link us all up together,”

“You can do that Dai-chan?”

“Yeah, just remember; keep the intentions on letting me in otherwise it will take me time to break through your mental barrier,”

“I would suggest Daiki-san be paired up with somebody since he is our unity point, it will be complicated to fend for oneself while using a power that requires stillness of body and concentration of mind,” Miyano suggested.

“Makes sense; then let’s do this, since we have to explore the entirety of the island we’ll group up according to abilities and the chosen terrain,” Yuto added.

“Daiki, has Ryosuke said anything?” Hikaru asked. The boy shook his head.

“I heard him talking but it was low and muffled, I haven’t heard anything else after that but maybe getting to higher ground will let me detect him,”

“Then let’s take a look at the map, it’s a satellite shot so we can make out the terrain, its mostly rock and forest, could be swamps so just be careful and maneuver the best you can, let’s pretend it’s a hiking trip,” said Hikaru lightly. The others nodded plainly with the exception of a poker faced Kei.

“Alright then, if we’re done brainstorming, let’s split up and get going!”

A/N: So for the people who have followed me so far, thank you so much! You have no idea how much this means to me! Shadow Boy's holds a special place in my heart for being the first ever Fanfiction I had ever written and now the sequel is in its final chapters. I can't promise an immediate update since I have exams coming up but it will be daily postings after I'm through with my papers. The final chapters are the toughest so far since they explode with all the action I've been holding up for the sake of character development and I want to make sure I do each member justice. I will do my best with them and I hope I don't disappoint! Please keep supporting this amateur so she will make something of herself and stay for the rest of this bizarre ride!

Kota grasped tufts of his hair in horror, breathing quick and shallow. The eyes that gazed back at him were empty and the skin and lips were paler than death.

"Ryo...Ryosuke?"

Hikaru stumbled into a run, heart beat racing. The sphere of flame atop his palm was the only light in the narrow tunnel. With a desperate cry he slammed against the metal bars, shaking the locked door like a madman. He gasped and turned around fearfully, eyes widening at the growl in the dark.

Daik remembered their previous meetings, things hadn't really gone well...on his part. She smirked at him, a strange glint in her eye that sent shivers down his spine. He was prepared this time, he wouldn't let her get into his mind that easy but it was the pale faced boy next to him that he was anxious for.

"Those guards weren't a problem," Kei began, watching as the men ran around aimlessly and fought against each other in a frenzy. It was the first time he had managed to affect so many people at once without Daiki. Well maybe because they were all staring right at him. He stumbled back as Daiki pushed aside a large rock thrown their way with a wave of his hand.

"How do we go about dealing with her?" he continued jerking his head towards the girl in the white dress, shaking her head at her subordinates.

Daiki sighed,

"I've got a plan."

A strange sensation made him jolt and direct his attention to Suzuka who was now glaring at him from across the clearing. His eyes widened as she opened her mouth.

Yuto gasped as the rock underneath him gave way. Terrified eyes upon the sharp rocks that were awaiting his landing he shrieked as a pair of arms wrapped around his midriff, and then as he glided along a soft breeze over the rocks and was safely released over a patch of dry ground, he turned to look at his younger friend, hovering almost a feet off the ground, hair fluttering.

"Pay attention Yutti," he reprimanded gesturing towards a figure standing across the calm pool of water. Yuto frowned as he spotted the copper hair and a long blade.

"Well if it isn't my number one fan."
