Part Four

Trust, betrayal...the limits of friendship and love...an amalgamation of different feelings...strength isn't always solid, but sometimes vulnerable...like quicksilver.

Chapter One: Weight of Secrets
Responsibility is a word that sounds as if it has weights attached to it. It comes in many forms; pets, household chores, homework, expectations of the adults, our own dreams and aspirations…something like that. It can be an assignment with a deadline, the rent, the family’s budget, the young ones under your care for a night…for a lifetime. In whichever form it presents itself, it’s definitely not easy.

Heavy, stressful…worrying…

Sometimes, they are given to us. Sometimes, we take them on by ourselves. Despite whatever we may feel about them, with enough motivation…they help us move forward. To become strong enough to tackle things that would have made us toss and turn as we lay in bed at night, thinking about them.

Kota had been teaching himself to take charge of things without getting others involved. He wanted to train himself, a part of him believed that tomorrow might be tougher than today and the end of one problem does not mean the end of them all. If something doesn’t go well today, he would learn from it and be more prepared for something else tomorrow. He can’t stop; he would just have to keep running forwards. He had been very confident in his plans and his abilities to tackle them.

Now, he wasn’t just scared. He was exhausted. He wanted to break down, cry and scream and kick everything in his way. He wanted to smash things and break things. He wanted to yell at everyone else, blame them for everything. And then he just wanted to curl up in a corner, disappear from everyone’s sight so he could sleep for an eternity.

Of course that wasn’t happening.

For no matter how prepared we are; life itself was quite unpredictable.

“What is going on?” Kota asked politely, very carefully avoiding all the curious gazes. Their manager sighed.

“A couple of things Kota, and the reason we called you back is that this gentleman here is invoking his rights as government official to freeze
the company’s activities until he has personally questioned all of its employees,”

The boys observed the said man. He seemed to be in his late 50’s, dressed in a crisp suit and shiny black shoes. He gave them a polite nod.

“My name is Toru Suzuki, I am a member of the Intelligence division,”

The boys and a very nervous Miyano bowed in greeting.

“This may seem perturbing but it is not actually, just a simple investigation,” the man continued.

“We have no problem cooperating with you sir, but I hope you know that the man behind you is a criminal?” Kota spoke, glaring daggers at Kitagawa Ken. The older man sighed heavily, looking as miserable as he could. Hikaru rolled his eyes.

Suzuki glanced at Ken briefly before facing the boys again.

“I understand, but he is here because he has provided the military with valuable information,”

Kota felt Daiki stiffen next to him.

“Information?”

“Yes young man, now would all of you boys and the lady doctor take a seat, this will take time,”

Miyano looked troubled at being identified and Kota reckoned the same thoughts were going through her head.

‘How much did he know?’

Yuya caught his fellow workmate, Tamamori asking him a silent question with a jerk of his head to the official’s direction. Yuya replied with a shrug, successfully looking completely clueless.

“A few months ago,” Suzuki began, “A naval submarine patrolling our waters received a strange transmission, we believed it wasn’t mean for us but for someone at the mainland, we just managed to be in the way and received it as well. The signals were originating from a relatively small island, the land enough for a prefecture but as far as we know, uninhabited.  Men were sent to the shores but all they found was wildlife. We set on deciphering the messages; they were four in total. In time they stopped so we assumed whoever was sending it discovered they were being eavesdropped on,”

“If I may sir,” Yuri spoke out suddenly.

“Why are you telling this to us?”

“I was waiting for your group to get here before moving past this point of the story,” Suzuki responded with a small smile.

“You see, three things led us to this company; first was the content of the messages, second, the police finding a tracker on one of you boys that was set to the same home frequency as the one we detected from that island and third, upon further investigation…a kidnapping of one the Idols by a group of medical personnel working for a Pharmaceutical company and the subsequent prosecution of the company’s now ex-president in regards to this case,”

Hikaru hid his face in his hands with a groan. Kota sighed. Miyano Sakura was staring at the floor. The rest of the room had broken out into furious whispers. Suzuki’s next words though plunged the room into an uproar.

“I understand you were one of those personnel Dr Miyano?”

Miyano nodded. The manager managed to calm them down but only enough to allow Suzuki to continue speaking.

“Then you should also know that it was because of her Ken was caught right?” Kota responded sternly. The man nodded.

“Yes, we’ve got that much out from Kitagawa-san, together with a list of people other than Miyano-san involved in that boy’s kidnapping. The main group involved in the kidnapping was never caught. They are all suspects we now believe to be involved in an underground syndicate of sorts, and the people exchanging those messages. Some time ago, it came to our attention that people were going missing from different parts of the country. These people shared one thing in common. They were the best of the best…scientists, engineers, computer specialists.
A handful of these people were Yamada-san’s kidnappers,”

“What were those messages about?” asked the manager with a frown.

“Time and places of meeting, between this ‘secret’ organization and Yamada Ryosuke.”

Kota felt a lump in his throat.

“Your team mate, Yamada Ryosuke had been meeting up with his kidnappers…and from the looks on your faces…without your knowledge, I find it odd…don’t you?”

Kota stared at the ground, trying to understand the words the older man was speaking.

“Where is Yamada?” the manager asked angrily.

Kota swallowed; the other boys were following his orders a little too diligently for his liking by being completely silent. He avoided all the burning stares, moistened his lips before looking Suzuki straight in the eye.

“I don’t know, he’s not with us,”

The man shook his head as the room buzzed crazily.

“We have reason to suspect, that Yamada either is or has become a part of that organization…whether his kidnapping was staged is a question as well,”

“It was not!” Yuya hissed angrily. Yuri squeezed his arm, a warning in his stare.

“I understand your feelings, he is your friend…but as much as there is no solid evidence supporting our beliefs, there isn’t any denying it either,”

Kota wanted the ground to swallow him whole.

“This organization is a threat, before they do anything harmful, we need to corner them…so I ask you boys for the sake of the people of our country…cooperate with us, tell me everything about your friend, help me track the syndicate down through him,”

“We…,” Yuya began looking lost as Suzuki approached him with a kind smile.

Kota got to his feet.

“Stay away from them,”

“Excuse me?”

Kota carefully stepped between the two, forcing Suzuki to back off. He glared at the man.

“Stay away from them all, there is nothing they know that can help you,”

“And you do?” Suzuki asked with a raised eyebrow. He felt Hikaru grab his sleeve. Kota sighed.

“I might,”

There was a heavy silence in the air as Suzuki and Kota just glared at each other.

“Fine,” the older man agreed.

“I will take you to headquarters while the rest can go home,”

Ignoring the loud protests from nearly everyone in the room, Kota allowed himself to be lead out. He heard Hikaru yell out his name and turning around saw the shock and despair on his group mates’ faces before the door was shut close.
