Chapter 24 - Of Minivans and Back Up Plans

Daisuke watches in great amusement as his grandmother fusses over the younger boy who stands silently, a shy smile upon his face.

“I knew Daisuke’s clothes would fit you, and the two of you are almost the same height!”

“Grandma...we’ve got to go now, Kei and Ken will be coming back with the van anytime now,”

“Oh do you boys have to leave, after such a while the house was so lively again!”

Daisuke makes a face; lively might not have been the exact word.

“We’ll come back and visit soon,” he says giving her a quick hug. She suddenly grabs him and drags him out of the room, leaving Ruka alone to slowly button up his red sweater.

“Daisuke, if you…just saying…God forbid…do not find Ruka-chan’s family or do not get to reunite him with them…you know…we could always…,”

Daisuke’s eyebrows disappear into his bangs at the realization of his grandmother’s intentions.

“Adopt him? Are you serious?”

“Why not?”

Daisuke was stumped. He had thought of the idea himself not so long ago so there was nothing he could really say against it. He shrugs.

“If Ruka’s okay with it,” he replies simply. Just then, a servant approaches them, announcing the arrival of Daisuke-sama’s friends in a minivan.

Ruka walks out of the room, giving the lady a gracious boy and receives an-almost tackle in return.

“Did you eat your medicine?” Daisuke asks as they descend the steps. The boy nods obediently in return. Daisuke looks up to spot Kei entering through the gate, most probably to help him with Ruka but freezes in his steps as he sees the boy.

Ruka looks back at him, almost fearfully before bowing politely.

“Thank you for looking after me,” he says his voice a mere whisper.

Kei sighs and gives him a small nod.

“It’s not over yet, a little earlier than I expected but the side effects of Radcliffe’s drugs will take time to completely wear off, and the ones I’m giving you…they have sedative effects so don’t fight sleep if it comes…your body heals when you sleep,”

Ruka nods in understanding and walks out of the gate, climbing into the vehicle waiting at it.

“Let’s go,” Kei urges as Daisuke stares at the white car.

“Kei, the minivan makes me feel like a kidnapper,”

The older boy rolls his eyes before grabbing him by the collar with an inhuman strength and almost flinging him into the van.

Ken blinks the sleep out of his eyes as sunlight strikes his face. He feels a weight on his shoulder and turns to find Daisuke fast asleep, large earphones blaring some *unearthly music.

He smiles at the view outside the window. The ocean was sapphire blue and the sand gleamed gold under the mid-day sun. The sight of it brought back fond memories. Kei was sitting before him, a book in hand and thick spectacles framing his tired eyes.

“I spent two summers here, back in high school…my friends and I used to go diving three times a week and had bonfires on the beach at night,”

“Hmmm, sounds pleasant,” Kei replies with a smile. He shuts the book with a snap and casts his gaze at the very last seat. Ruka was half-lying on it, fast asleep. His face lacked colour, lips were chapped and the area around his eyes was sunken and shadowy, indicative of his ill health.

“Is he completely fine now? I mean…mentally?” Ken asks, following the older boy’s gaze. Kei shakes his head.

“**When it comes to psychosis, there may appear a period of time in which a person acts like his normal self, maybe even like how they were before their illness,”

“Do you mean to say that this is just a **lucid interval?”

“Exactly,”

Ken frowns at the revelation.

“He can be cured right?”

Kei sighs.

“I’m going to run out of funds soon and I will need to get back to work. Also, neither of us can take lifelong responsibility of this boy, he might refuse it himself one day…so I feel like the best option is to return him to his family,”

“He’s not just a lost child that we could return by just showing up at their doorstep, he was charged with murder and then labelled insane…oh Kei, I forgot to tell you!”

“What?”

“I’m sorry there was so much going on it slipped my mind. Ruka’s publically dead,”

“What!”

Kei’s frown deepens as he watches Ken carefully pull out a file from his bag without waking Daisuke up. He almost snatches the news cutting from the younger’s hands and gasps audibly as he reads the headline.

“Wait, they never got Ruka’s body…is the family aware of what happened to him in England?”

“I don’t know,”

Ken watches with apprehension as Kei’s shoulders fall and he buries his face in his hands.

“Do you have a plan B?”

Kei peeks at him through the gaps in his fingers.

“Yes, but it will take longer,”

“So chill, Daisuke and I have another month left before term starts again, coincidentally,”

“But,”

“Hey three heads are better than one…no matter how brilliant that one mind may be…we’ll get through this…but like you planned, we’ll start by locating his family,”

“Oh I’ve already done that,”

Ken stares as the older stretches.

“You were being way too melancholic just now figuring you had that good of a plan B!”

Kei smiles impishly. He picks up the book he had been reading and shows Ken the cover.

“7 days in Okinawa…a tourism book?” Ken asks baffled. Kei nods.

“You know, grandma Kato was pretty okay with us staying with her a bit longer, but I got a hold of this book from her library and did some research…no don’t look at me like that this is my own copy I didn’t take hers…look at the name of the writer,”

“Rika Yamashita?”

“Yeah…this is Ruka’s mom,”

Ken’s eyes widen as Kei flashes a triumphant smile.

“I called Yukimura and he got their recent address for me, he says he’s coming over to Okinawa to help us with Ruka, that boy’s got contacts. So, Rika-san is a very established free-lance writer and popular columnist for an Okinawa based tourism magazine. This book was her best-selling debut. About a year ago, she opened up a restaurant with her oldest daughter in Okinawa, her current place of residence,”

“So…it was not because you wanted to see my summer home,”

Kei blinks at the sour look on Ken’s face.

“You’re kidding right?”

Ken chuckles before giving him a mischievous wink. Kei shakes his head, surprised that his serious best friend was capable of this.

A/N: I hope you guys aren't getting tired of this. Tell me what do you prefer, chapters this size or less but longer chapters? I think if I post longer chapter I might be needing 4-5 more chapters to end it. Oh, and Radcliffe's going to make an appearance again...just saying.
