Chapter 22 - The Demons Within
“Well well well, look who’s stuck with us for tonight?”
Ruka keeps his bloodshot eyes upon the book before him. His pupils are unmoving, not a single word upon the page being processed by his mind.
“Satoshi leave him alone, he’s had a rough day,”
“Why the hell are you being so nice to him Nanabe-kun? He ditched us for that brat, remember?”
Ruka leans his head against the wall and pulls his blanket closer to him, trying to hide the treacherous tears. He was glad he got the lower bunk.
“Is he crying?”
“Seriously?”
Ruka jumps slightly as something small and rough nudges him on the side of his arm. He looks to find the bespectacled Nanabe holding out a water bottle.
“You look dehydrated,”
Ruka blinks at him for a bit, confused before taking the bottle with hesitancy.
Nanabe pushes Satoshi and Kuromiya to the other side of the room.
“We’re not doing this,” he says as Ruka gulps down the water thirstily.
“But you gave him the bottle!”
Ruka chokes, launching into a coughing fit. His thirst had him ignoring the slight strange taste of the water.
“The guy says it’s gonna make him sleep sooner or later, he probably needs that and Kuromiya open the windows he needs the air,”
“Nanabe?”
“Look, I know we hate him and all…but I don’t want to die of a guilty conscious,”
Ruka leaned back against his pillow as his breathing became laboured. The room was spinning and his vision started to dim. He reached for his side table and hysterically felt for his glasses but ended up knocking everything to the floor instead.
“He’ll do what we’ll tell him now right?”
“Satoshi I said no!”
Ruka yelped as he felt a strong grip on either side of him and the fabric of his mattress was replaced by the wooden floor. His eyes widened as he spotted a flash above him.
“Put away that knife Satoshi, the teachers will find out about it if he gets hurt!”
“We’re just gonna threaten him and he’s already got that bruise from the fight with Yukimura,”
“Yeah Nanabe, he needs to stop acting like he owns everything!”
“Oh yah, the file, play that file the guy told us to, it’s supposed to give him a headache or something and make him more obedient,”
“Oh God this is just so wrong, I have a really bad feeling about this!”
“Nanabe just play it,”
The boys listen in silence as a voice comes out from Nanabe’s phone. The words are incomprehensible, like a different language. Ruka’s head rolls back as he attempts to fight off an urge to hurt the boys holding him down.
“This is weird,”
Ruka starts to struggle, pulling and pushing to release himself from their death grips. Kuromiya looses his hold and falls back. Using his free hand, Ruka snatches the knife from Satoshi’s hand and slashes it through the air.
With a howl, Satoshi scurries back, holding his wounded arm, eyes widened in fright at the boy before him. Ruka could see it, the fear, he could smell the blood on his own hand and clothes and smirks, a satisfaction from the sense of power this little object had given him.
'Kill them…kill them Ruka…'
He frowns. The voice was not his own. He drops the knife and falls back against the wall.
“I’m sorry,” he speaks, his voice a shuddering gasp. Power, he did not want power. What good had it done for him? No, he did not want power…he wanted love.
The lights turn off all of a sudden and Ruka hears something strange; muffled gasps of pain before his consciousness slips completely.

There is naught but the sounds of a company having a meal in silence. There is a tension that hangs awkwardly in the air but no one dares to utter a word. Chopsticks clicked together and against the bowls and Ken tries to keep the slurping of his soup to the minimum. He just wished Kei would do the same.
Daisuke’s well aware of the eyes boring onto his head but he keeps his gaze upon his food. He wasn’t afraid of the reactions from his family, the reactions of his father more accurately. For some reason he felt detached from him, as if they were never really related.
He sighs deeply, silently berating himself for such a thought. His father had cared for him in many ways and they had been on pretty good terms but he couldn’t fight off the green-eyed-monster rearing its ugly head within his chest.
“Daisuke,”
He puts down his chopsticks, pushing down the urge to just stand up and leave the room.
“Don’t you think you have some explaining to do?”
Kei and Ken exchange a quick glance of apprehension before placing down their cutlery and trying to think of an excuse to leave the room without seeming impolite.
“I want to help him father,”
“That’s very noble of you son, but is it really wise to keep such a dangerous person in your grandmother’s house? Did you not even once think about her safety?”
The accusation hits the boy like a thunderbolt. He loved his grandmother the most, everyone knew that. He blinks back tears and holds his breath as the lady puts down her tea and shakes her head.
“Now now, that is not the main issue,”
“Safety is the main issue here mother, and my son being reckless enough to cause you harm would bear down heavily on my conscious,”
“This isn’t Daisuke’s fault sir, I’m sorry about all of this,”
Kei feels his voice falter as he becomes the focus of the little group. He clears his throat and with a reassuring nod from Ken continues.
“He’s my patient, it’s just because of the strange consequences surrounding the boy we couldn’t just go admit him in a hospital or keep him in a hotel, but I do realize how inconvenient it is for you all so I will shift Ruka to a different place tomorrow that is, if he may stay here the night?”
Kei feels himself shrink under the appraising gaze of the older man and quickly thinks about checking into a hotel. He was running out of funds though.
“We can take him to my beach house in Okinawa, it’s a journey but we can rent a van, what do you say?” Ken suggested and Kei gives him a relieved nod.
“Daisuke isn’t leaving with you I hope?”
Daisuke looks up at his father at the statement and he could see the surprise in the older man’s face. Maybe it was the lone tear that fell from his eye.
“Ruka’s a responsibility we took up together, and we will end it together…I can’t abandon them at this stage,”
“Sir, Daisuke’s the only who can handle Ruka. His patience and compassion have reached a soul lost in darkness. Ruka’s like a child living in a nightmare. Daisuke’s efforts in England have created a very strong bond between them. We need him. Ruka needs him,”
Kei tries to hide a smile at the pride in Daisuke’s grandmother’s eyes as she regards her grandson.
“Grandma you taught me about love, compassion , responsibility…we’ve always had an abundance of that…so why not give it to somebody who really needs it…it’s what I thought,”
The woman nods with a sigh, a gentle smile as she looked down upon the three boys. Kato-san though, looked greatly distressed.
“Kurosaki-san, you’ve been there for my boy when he needed someone the most, I can’t deny you his help when you need it…,”
"Grandma...,"
“You boys have my prayers and blessings, may you succeed in your endeavours and may all four of you return to the ones you love…safe and sound.”
