Chapter Ten : Clarinet Polka

“Ni-chan,”

Ryutaro hoisted his bag before turning to look at the smaller figure by his bedroom door. He was holding a strange green plant with large yellow flower that resembled a tulip.

“What the hell is that thing?”

“It’s a gift from Yuma-ni and me…for your Jump house!”

Ryutaro frowned at the ‘gift’…it kind of resembled one of those man-eating plants from movies.

“Where did you get that?”

“Well, somebody gave us the seed, but me and Yuma-ni raised it…ain’t it pretty?”

“I guess…,”

Shintaro beamed before thrusting the plant into his hands.

“Keep it next to a window, and water once every week…,” Shintaro stroked the flower once and Ryutaro could have sworn he heard it purr.

Miyano unlocked the door, hands almost trembling with anticipation. Placing a mask on her face she pushed it open, backing off immediately as a strong reek burst out in a cloud of dust. She beckoned Yabu to put on his mask before they entered, one after the other.

The room was dark and every surface was covered by a layer of dust almost a few inches thick. There were cobwebs nearly everywhere. A mass of wooden crates and boxes lined the walls and there was broken furniture, moth eaten curtains and a barrel of old toys. After groping the wall blindly for a couple of seconds, Yabu finally found the light switch.

“Wow…okay, this will take some time,” Yabu exclaimed pulling a spider out of Miyano’s hair. She puffed up her cheeks, hands on her hips.

“Is it going to be only the two of us?”

“Um…well Hikaru, Inoo-chan and Yuya volunteered to get the cleaning supplies, they should have been here by now…oh never mind,”

Miyano giggled as Yabu frowned at the stock of fresh supplies by the door.

“They probably scrammed after taking a look at this place,” he sighed, a hand on his temple.

“These won’t be enough,” Miyano said thoughtfully, looking through the supplies. Yabu took out his phone.

“I’ve texted nearly everyone in Jump for more supplies, unless Hikaru warned them about this mess beforehand…we might get them and some more help soon,”

Yabu watched with amusement as Miyano tied a bandana around her head and put on a green apron. She handed him a pink one with frills. He raised an eyebrow.

“What?”

“I’m not wearing this,” he stated firmly.

“I’m not wearing this either but we only had these two at home!” she retorted.

“Look at this, it’s got frills!”

“But aren’t you a Johnny?”

“Just because I’m all sparkles and pinks and purples at work doesn’t mean I’m not a boy!”

Miyano sighed.

“We’re getting nowhere,” she replied miserably handing him the green one and putting on the pink. Yabu did a little victory dance, kicking a metal bucket in the process.

Miyano picked up a duster, thinking of the best place to begin, ignoring the lanky boy jumping around behind her, holding onto his foot. She took out her phone, placing it on a slab which seemed to be the kitchen counter and turned on her music player.
“Clarinet Polka?” Yabu asked recognizing the piece.

“It helps me clean,” she explained with a sheepish smile.

He sniggered.

“It kind of reminds me of BEST,” he said grabbing the broom and smiled as Miyano laughed.

“Alright,” she said tightening the little bow of her apron.

“Let’s get to work.”

Yabu heaved the crate with all the things to be disposed off and headed towards the open door, nearly colliding with someone standing at the doorframe with packages in his hand.

“Sumima-…Yama-chan?”

Miyano, who had been standing on a stool dusting a ceiling lamp toppled over onto the couch behind her in surprise, releasing a massive cloud into the air and herself into a coughing fit. Ryosuke placed all the packages onto the floor and rushed to her, pulling her onto her feet and away from the dust.

“Are you okay?” he asked anxiously as she calmed down. She nodded with a slight smile before locking a surprised gaze with Yabu who still stood on the same spot, stunned.

“Uwahhhhh…were you actually planning to do all of this by yourself?” he exclaimed looking around and taking in the view. The cobwebs were gone, so were most of the boxes and wooden furniture but there was still much to be done.

“Yabu-kun, why are you gaping at me like that?”

Yabu shut his mouth and shook his head furiously. Ryosuke bounced back to his packages and placed them on the kitchen counter. He then heaved in a bag.

“Mom has sent some curtains, and a tablecloth…oh and my older sister knitted us some cushion covers…I also picked out a rug for the living room and I got some Dettol for the floor, window cleaners, air dehumidifiers, room freshener and some strawberry flavored marshmallows,”

“Marshmallows?” Miyano asked curiously.

“All that shopping made me hungry!” he replied matter-of-factly.

Yabu dropped the crate he was holding, shocking the two.

“Yabu-kun…daijobu?” Ryosuke asked a little scared as Yabu looked at him with an unreadable expression. He screamed as the older boy pulled him into a death grip.

“You’re back!” he wailed, choking the younger.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about but this is kinda disgusting,” Ryosuke retorted struggling to break free.

“Gomen,” sniffed the eldest wiping his face. Ryosuke shook his head with a smile.

The polka played on in the background as the hours on the clock ticked by. Ryosuke had brought his own apron and gloves and was now twirling with the mop, smiling as every stroke brought a shine to the marble floor.

Yabu rubbed his cloth in circles upon the glass stopping as Miyano reached the same spot on the other side. The window was slightly tinted from the outside so he watched with amusement as she rubbed a stubborn stain with immense concentration, completely unaware of him. He knocked on the glass, making her jump. She glared back, realizing he was there waving at her goofily and sprayed the glass cleaner on his face. He backed off in shock before mentally slapping himself as he remembered the barrier between them.

“Yabu-kun!” The lanky boy looked up from the boxes of brand new *savers that Hikaru had left (along with his trademark **Yaotome face on a sign card) and turned at the call to find Ryosuke standing in front of a closed room.

“What is it?” he asked approaching him with Miyano following.

“I think this is where the fusebox is…but…,”

All three jumped as a strange groaning sound came from within the room.

“Could it be…,”

Both boys looked at each other, paling.

“Why oh why did Yuma force me to watch that ***horror drama,” Ryosuke gulped clinging onto Yabu’s bony waist.

“What are you guys talking about?” Miyano asked confused. The boys looked at each other before backing of slowly.

“Sakura…,” Yabu began sweetly.

Miyano blinked at him before sighing.

“So…sacrifice the girl…some gentlemen,” she grumbled. She held onto her broom tightly before throwing upon the door. Three high pitched shrieks resounded through the apartment.

“I wonder if Yabu came by…we should hire cleaners for this place,” Inoo said arms folded as Hikaru went through his bunch of keys one by one.

“What are all of those for anyway?” he asked irritated.

“Stuff,” was the vague answer.

“I think cleaners are not really in our budget Inoo-chan,” Yuto remarked looking through a checklist.

“Found it!” Hikaru exclaimed, picking out a silver key.

“So, Inoo and Takaki bought a fridge, Hikaru brought spare savers from his house (the miser), we’ve collected futons, mattresses, bedsheets, pillows, the movers will be here soon with our desks and the rest of the luggage,” Chinen read out from the checklist.

“Ryu and me got some grocery for the first week,” Keito announced. They all stared at the plant by Ryutaro’s feet and then at him. He turned away, red in the face.

“I’ve brought some cute bean bags to sit on!” Yuto exclaimed happily.

“Well, the landlord said the apartment includes an American styled kitchen, two master bedrooms, a dining table with seating for six, a sofa set and a pool in the terrace,”

“Sounds too good to be true…,”

“Hey, we’re celebrities okay…we deserve this much!”

“Shut up Yuya, have you forgotten how much of mess this place is in…,”

Hikaru had to hold onto his mouth to prevent his jaw from breaking as it dropped heavily. The chamber was expansive, marble flooring spreading to where it descended in two steps that ended at the circular living area. The large glass windows beyond opened up into a balcony with the unfilled pool and wired fencing, the evening skyline of Tokyo gracing the view.

The crystal chandelier above the sofas was alight. Inoo pushed Hikaru aside and walked to the kitchen to his right, placing the take out he and Takaki had purchased before folding his arms and sighing at the three collapsed figures. Sakura was sprawled upon the three-seater while Yabu was curled into a ball on an armchair. His eyes widened as he spotted Yamada on a rug between the two, arms clutching a half consumed bag of marshmallows. A jet black feline was curled up next to him, pawing his hair.

“I think I will now go die of guilt,”

“Go die Hika,” Daiki snapped, smacking him on the head. Chinen sat next to Miyano and gently patted her head. Yuya poked Yabu’s cheek, silently guffawing as the latter attempted to smack his hand away, eyes still closed. Yuto sat by Ryosuke’s head as Daiki picked the cat up, using it to chase Hikaru around the apartment.

“Ryo-chan,” he whispered, leaning close to his ear. Ryosuke eyes snapped open and he sat up with a start, bumping his head against Yuto’s really hard.

“Baka,” he groaned as they both sat massaging their aching heads. Sakura got up immediately and rubbed her weary eyes. A yelp from Takaki made all eyes look at Yabu who was stretching and yawning widely.

“He bit my finger!” Takaki exclaimed throwing Yabu a dirty look which the latter replied with a groggy smile.

“You guys did a great job, the place even smells nice!” Keito exclaimed looking around in awe.

“We left the pool and the rooms…too tired,” Sakura replied trying to hold in a yawn.

“Come, let’s have some dinner,” Inoo beckoned.

Ryutaro placed the plant next to the glass door, smiling at the thoughtfulness in the gift before walking away to join the rest. He paused as he heard something akin to a sneeze. Looking behind, he could spot nothing that could have actually made that sound. Shrugging, he walked away.
