Chapter 7 - Blurred Reality
“Hey, will you please tell me what happened? Where did you go?”
Daisuke takes in a deep breath and leans back into the couch, aware of the concerned gaze of the younger boy next to him.
“I’m just a little disturbed, that’s all,”
“Do you want to talk about it?”
Daisuke shakes his head.
“I think I need to sort my feelings out first,”
Ken sighs and places a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
“Take your time, I’m here if you want to talk,”
“Thanks Ken,”
Inoue shuffles over to the desk to continue going through some old files he had dug up as Daisuke turns his computer on. And so the next
few minutes consist of the soft taps of skilled fingers on keys and the flipping of pages.
“Hey…Ken?”
“Hmm?”
“Do you have a Facebook™ account?”
“Um…yeah, but I’m not really an active user, why? Wanna add me?”
Daisuke smiles as he hears Ken end his sentence with a chuckle.
“I see you every day, my on net minutes are my only Ken-free minutes okay?”
“Ouch that hurt,”
Daisuke smiles at the younger boy who replies similarly. Honestly, he hadn’t been very happy when their duo had progressed to a trio. It had
always been him and Kei and he had preferred it that way. Call him possessive but there was no way he would have let Kei go off to some other country with a new friend. Even if that meant that he had to step on his ego and finally use his father’s gift. He hadn’t really planned to leave his beloved grandma behind, but Kei and she were the only people he had considered family and since she had always told him that she would be right there waiting when he came back, he chose to stick with Kei until the older boy was done with his studies.
He remembers how cold he used to be towards Ken at the beginning, but the boy’s patience with him, his loyalty to Kei and his constant attempts to befriend Daisuke gradually won him over. And now, he was almost as dear to him as Kei.
“Dai-chan, what’s up?”
Daisuke realizes he had been staring at the boy for a bit too long and he smiles apologetically.
“Sorry, I was just reminiscing,”
Ken gives him an amused look.
“You’ve been acting really strange ever since we came to this village Dai-chan,”
“Ruka does not have a Facebook account,”
“Ruka? The patient?”
“Yeah, I mean…back when he was brought here, everybody who’s anybody had a Facebook account,”
“You have a point,”
“There are many Yamashita Rukas coming up in the search, but not ours, strange isn’t it?”
“He must not be social,”
“Neither am I, but I still have 625 friends, most of whom I’ve never actually met,” Daisuke scoffs.
“Hmm,”
“You probably think I’m making a big fuss out of this right?”
“Kind of,”
“Well, because I suspect that the account was deleted,”
Ken frowns. He bit back a “maybe he did it himself” and waited for further explanation.
Daisuke sighs.
“It’s impossible to not find anything on the world wide web, there are no news articles, no pictures, no e-mail account, no nothing, it’s like that boy never existed!”
Ken picks up a file lying on the floor and begins flipping through it absent mindedly, trying to make sense of Daisuke’s discovery. As he was leafing through charts and newspaper clippings, he paused as an old article slipped off and fell onto the floor. Bending low to pick it up, he finds himself staring, in great surprise, at the picture of a strict-looking man in a business suit.
“Um…Dai-chan,”
Daisuke watches expectantly as Ken sits down next to him and holds up a cut out article from a Japanese newspaper dating a few years back.
“Look,”
Daisuke’s eyes widen as he reads the headline in bolded Kanji.
“Son of Entrepreneur dies in captivity, Yamashita Shinichi pleads to public to leave the incident behind and move on,”
The boys exchange a confused look.
“What the hell?”

Ruka tilts his head in confusion. He knew the strange young man sitting in front of him was trying real hard to communicate but his words were hardly intelligible. He squints be cause his vision seems blurred, and the way the man’s mouth moves feels like a movie playing without sound. There are voices he hears, many, hoarse whispers echoing off the confines in his consciousness but he ignores them this time, trying to make sense of the man’s words.
This guy was different. While the rest of the world was filled with darkness and illuminated figures that all looked exactly the same, he could very well appreciate the man’s bright eyes and his flaming red hair. He sees the man read out of a little book and his eyes widen when he realizes he can finally understand him.
“My name is Justin,” he says. Ruka nods his head and sees Justin smile before moving towards him and to his surprise, releasing his binds. Opening the little book again he speaks again.
“I have something interesting to show you,”
He stares as Justin holds up a thorny stem with a big black rose on its tip. He points at it and says something in his own language again and Ruka nods dumbly.
But then his vision comes into a sharp focus and the surrounding comes alive. He realizes that he’s seated on a bench in a park, the ground laden with snow.
He can’t feel the chill though and so he tries to lift his hands…panicking as they refuse. He struggles as he feels his body bound in a state of paralysis. He frowns as he sees Justin stand up and grin from ear to ear before holding up the rose to his neck.
“Ju-Justin…don’t,” he hears a voice, it’s foreign but somehow he remembers moving his lips.
Justin shakes his head, still smiling so wide that it was almost freaky. Then without warning, he jabs the stem forcefully into his neck. Ruka tries to close his eyes and continues struggling against the invisible bind. He couldn’t cover his ears or even close his eyes. He begins to cry hysterically as he watches Justin repeatedly stab himself and scream in pain as his blood splatters onto the white snow.
His twitching body falls onto the ground with a thump, the colour scarlet oozing into the snow beneath him.
Ruka gasps as he feels arms holding him down. He could hear himself screaming, his vocal cords strained under the stress. There they were again, distorted illuminated figures without a face. Their hands feel like claws and he continues struggling, vision blurred by his tears.
He blocks out the whispers and squints, hoping to find a familiar face; somebody, anybody who would take his side, somebody who was his own. He flinches as he feels a prick on his arm.
He sees a young man hovering over him, a comforting palm on his forehead. He could hear his voice, as if from a distance telling him that everything would soon be alright. His cries die down as he feels giddy and so he closes his eyes, finding himself falling into the darkness.
He feels his mouth move again and releases a throaty whisper before he finds himself in that forest again, but this time…he’s alone.
Kei frowns as he stares at the sleeping boy. He pulls up a blanket over his body and asks the departing nurse to bring his friends from the office.
There was something he needed to discuss with them…specifically with one of them, cause he swears that Ruka had whispered a ‘Dai-chan’ before falling under the effects of the sedatives.
Note: Yes Yes...i took ages...I'm so so sorry for such a late update. It had been a long busy busy week, the only other time i was this occupied was last semester's exam...and then LJ's technical issues...I can't blame them but I hope the maintainers get everything up and running as soon as possible...even aimini.net was down today :(
