Chapter Eight : Evolution

“He looks so…ordinary,”

“He does… doesn’t he?”

“It’s frightfully scary what you are capable of doing,”

“So you see how frustrating it is when I couldn’t reach Miyano’s level, even though he was my junior…he had that one perfect code that was missing in my research…that code that he perfected in that boy,”

The two watched as the body lying peacefully on the bed heaved a heavy breath before his fingers twitched.

“He’s the boy’s only opponent,”

“But uncle, I thought you said that Yamada was more powerful,”

The professor chuckled.

“But the young man here has no weaknesses…Yamada does,”

The young man on the bed opened his eyes…jet black glassy orbs.

The professor smiled at him.

“Good morning…Silver.”

He dug his hands deeper into his pocket, earphones securely in place. The music playing was a fine distraction as he walked down the
street, thoughts of the day’s rehearsal with the group and later with little Junko swirling within his consciousness.

He couldn’t help but notice how much of a serious lot they had become. Of course, Keito would still trip over his own feet (sometimes on purpose) and Inoo and Hikaru would still try to crack silly jokes, but the response would measure up to merely an amused smile or a chuckle or two.

He yawned lazily. Work used to be fun…now it was just work.

He pulled out his phone as he felt it buzz and a small smile graced his lips as he read his kouhai’s message.

Thanks for helping me practice again today senpai!

Jun

He chuckled as he remembered the little boy complaining of how he was so frequently bullied because of his name and that’s why he wanted to be called Jun instead of Junko.

During his break they had had lunch together and then had practiced a couple of songs, hearing recordings and singing along with them. It was difficult; he couldn’t help but admit it. Every line of a song had seemed to cost little Jun immense effort. But the boy was diligent and he struggled through every stanza nonetheless. Other than that, the younger had turned out to be a proficient learner of dance.

He smiled slightly at the memory of the boy’s genuine delight at the results of their efforts and when as a reward for his hard work he had snuck the boy into his own group’s practice when it resumed after lunch. The boy’s eyes had sparkled as he had watched his seniors dancing in front of the mirrors. They had all been in jerseys and t-shirts but according to Jun…they had never seemed more glamorous.

His sneakers crunched against gravel as he came to a sudden stop, eyes on the black car that had come to a stop right next to him.

Something felt odd.

The door swung open and a young woman in a grey pant suit and heels stepped out. She was slightly taller than him (‘The heels,’ he thought miserably) and had copper hair pulled into a high bun.

“Yamada-san?” she asked politely. He observed the car next to him with slight contempt.

“If you’re wondering about what happened to Kawashima, head to the nearest police station, I’m through playing with you people,”

The woman looked slightly taken aback as he shoved past her. He stopped though, after a few steps and turned around.

“And, if you try anything fishy,” he shot furiously.

“Remember that this is a populated sidewalk.”

He felt an unpleasant tingle down his spine as he heard an amused chuckle from within the car.

“I guess, I did a good thing by coming down here myself,”

Ryosuke backed off slightly as a man with graying hair stepped out of the car. He had on a magnificent suit and tie and his steely gray eyes were framed behind silver-rimmed spectacles.

To any passerby, the duo appeared as ordinary business folk.

“Now now don’t give me that glare, we haven’t even been properly introduced yet,”

He cocked an eyebrow.

“Who in the world are you and what do you want?”

“I see your experience has made you wary, but never mind that, would you please join me for a cup of coffee? I’ve been travelling all day and am quite worn out,”

Ryosuke sighed. What was he a five year old? Even five year olds weren’t that easy to lure.

“Get off my back seriously,” he groaned wearily turning on his heels.

“We’re not who you think we are, we don’t work for your company,” the woman said.

He froze, confused.

“We’re victims, just like you,”

“Hah?”

The man sighed as he approached the boy.

“It’s lonely…isn’t it?”

The world around him was a blur of lights and colours as the statement sunk slowly.

“It’s a thing many fear, being alone,”

He whirled around and gaped at the man, feeling a slight pang of fear in his heart.

“What do you mean?” he snapped. What was wrong with this guy? Messing with him like that.

“Your brothers aren’t like you, and soon they will come to realize that…and they will fear you…abandon you,”

“Shut up!”

People were staring but he cared not. How dare he say things like that?

“You know it very well. Deep in your heart you fear this because you have realized it too. There is an indefinite gap between you and the others…a gap they can’t fill and you can’t comprehend…,”

Ryosuke stared at the ground as the man approached him, a flurry of thoughts going through his brain.

No way, this man can’t be right.

“They are mere fragments of what you are…,”

Ryosuke looked up at him and gasped. The man’s eyes weren’t intimidating but rather…sympathetic.

“You no longer belong to this world, no longer accepted…,”

“Just get the hell away from me,” Ryosuke snapped shoving the man back rather harshly. His heart was beating like crazy as he began walking backwards, away from the staggering man and the woman tending to him.

“You belong with us, and with time, you will realize it,”

Ryosuke shook his head hysterically and stuttered as he apologized for colliding into a random stranger.

“No one will trust you, and you will not be able to trust anyone,”

“Stop it, just stop it,” Ryosuke breathed, gritting his teeth. The man shook his head.

“The little boy you hang out with,” the woman began cautiously.

“He’s Detective Tanaka’s little boy,”

“So?” Ryosuke snapped. What did Jun had to do with this?

“Detective Tanaka is suspicious of you all you know, after you all saved Nakajima from his clutches,”

Ryosuke stared at them, trying to make sense of everything.

The man shook his head with a smile.

“Come Ryosuke-kun, let’s have that coffee.”

“What do you think happened?”

Takaki looked over at his companion, shouldering the bag holding a clean set of clothes and shook his head.

“No idea, although, it’s kind of curious why Kota would call us through Sakura-chan’s phone and ask to bring him a clean set of clothes to a park, I hope he hasn’t run into any accident,”

Hikaru shrugged as they marched down the little path underneath the lamp. They could hear running water from the various fountains around the garden.

“It’s pretty late for a stroll in the park isn’t it?” Hikaru mused looking around at the almost deserted place.

“Hikaru-kun! Takaki-kun!”

Both boys spotted a flustered looking Miyano rushing towards them.

“What is it Sakura-chan? Are you alright?” Hikaru asked concerned at the panic on her face. She looked back, bewildered.

“Come,” she said and began making her way to a fountain that was not running. They both froze at the sight of their lanky friend, hunched as
he sat on the edge with only his jeans on and a jacket draped over his drenched body.

“What the hell happened to you?” Hikaru exclaimed. Yabu though, was too preoccupied with his hand which, to their horror they realized looked like water flowing in an invisible hand-shaped container.

“I…transformed,”

“Huh?” both boys exclaimed simultaneously, obviously freaked out.

“I transformed into an aqueous form of some kind,” Yabu sighed almost snatching the bag from Takaki’s hand as his own turned back to
flesh and skin.

“Okay, this is just too weird,” Hikaru stated and looked over at Miyano who shrugged, still pretty bewildered. Yabu shuffled off somewhere and then came back in a few minutes, fully dressed to find the trio standing and gaping at the fountain in silence.

“So…anyone care to explain?” Takaki voiced out.

“I think,” Miyano began with a glint of wonder in her eyes as she looked at Yabu.

“You evolved.”
