Chapter 20 - His Smile
Keisuke cried but no one heard.
His voice was muffled by the cloth around his mouth, body constrained by ropes…yet he did his best to struggle against the holds…screaming as he watched his father being assaulted without mercy.
“You really think you could hide forever eh Kenichi?”
The ruffians halted in their activity and looked at the man seated on the table nearby. He had an appearance that contrasted starkly with his surroundings; a calm face, steel tinted spectacles, a fine suit and tie.
He got to his feet and approached the slouched figure on the ground, his leather shoes clacking off the cemented floor.
“I remember, you were there in the office as my predecessor negotiated a deal with your old employer years back,”
“I had thought you an honest and intelligent man, unlike your impudent ex-boss,”
“Now, the old man has gotten himself missing and untraceable, leaving you to pay for the money he snagged from my client,”
Keisuke frowned. By client, did he mean the Yakuza?
“You tried to do the same I see; you entertainers are pretty apt in your vanishing acts,”
The man smiled smugly as the others laughed. Keisuke kept his anxious gaze fixed upon his father now bent low and clutching his stomach.
“If you plan to kill me, do it, but let my Idol go,” Kenichi muttered in a voice so hoarse and pained that it made Keisuke heart ache.
Takahara chuckled, shaking his head.
“No no Okamoto-san, it’s not going to be that easy,”
“Takahara-san, let him go,” Kenichi repeated severely.
The man in the suit, Takahara-san looked over at Keisuke and smirked, sending shivers down his spine.
“If I do that Okamoto-san, how do you expect us to be able to get those 3 billion yen back?”
Keisuke’s eyes widened. 3…3 billion yen?
“He has nothing to do with this!” Kenichi bellowed only to receive a powerful punch across his jaw. Keisuke wailed, the ropes leaving marks on his skin as he struggled to break free.
Takahara raised a hand to halt the man who had delivered the assault before walking over to bound and gagged boy.
Keisuke flinched as he heard the click of a gun being unlocked and placed upon his temple. His heart was throbbing painfully in his chest as the situation dawned upon him.
Am I going to die?
“My my, this is your old assignment all over again ne Kenichi-kun?”
Keisuke watched in bewilderment as his father’s eyes fell upon him and he saw in them pure fear.
“What was that boy’s name again Kenichi-kun? Yamada…Ryosuke…deshou?”
Kenichi turned away, scowling. Keisuke felt the world spin around him.
Yamada? Yuto-kun’s Yamada?
Could it be?
“What happened to that poor little boy again?” Takahara asked with a tone of pleasant curiosity.
Keisuke stared at his father, in disbelief of his luck and hoping desperately for an answer.
“He was shot dead,”
Kenichi’s curt reply caught Keisuke off guard. But the information itself cut through his heart like a knife.
No, he promised…he made a promise…he had to bring Yamada back to Drmmerboy…he had to!
His tiny ray of hope…gone. This was too much to take.
“Ara ara…poor thing, but…his body wasn’t found I heard…swept away into the sea was it?”
Kenichi shot Takahara a murderous glare, but he froze as he saw him holding a picture close to his own face, yet his eyes were fixed
upon Keisuke.
It hit him…hard.
Takahara knows? But how? It had been a foolproof plan!
“He was under your charge ne Kenichi-kun? I hope you compensated his family well for their loss,”
“What the hell are you trying to do Takahara?”
The man chuckled slightly before getting to his knees next to Keisuke who looked away, feeling uncomfortable with being stared at so
intently.
“I’ve been tracking you ever since your employer disappeared Okamoto, and my job won’t be done until the money has been repaid
with interest and the offender punished severely,”
“So punish me…but let the…,”
“Tanaka…iie, Okamoto Keisuke-san dess ka?” Takahara asked pulling the cloth around Keisuke’s mouth off roughly.
Keisuke nodded hesitantly.
“It’s amazing ne Kenichi-kun, that you would lose your young starlet to a kidnapping and murder, yet almost two years later, you, out of the blue would adopt a mysterious boy…an amnesiac,”
Keisuke stared at Takahara, stunned.
“You find yourself a new job, bring in your new son into the industry and become his manager,”
“Doing quite well aren’t you Keisuke-kun?” Takahara turned back to him with a cheery smile. Keisuke mustered up a bitter glare.
Takahara held up the picture in his hand and switched his gaze back and forth between it and Keisuke.
His smile widened.
“You’re lucky Okamoto, that you have enough friends in high places…and that there’s nobody left in Japan who actually knew Yamada
personally,”
"How do you expect to explain this to your 'so-called' son?"
Takahara threw the picture in his hand onto the floor before Keisuke whose dark brown eyes widened in disbelief.
It was a picture of a smiling little boy that resembled him. He frowned, this was him…except a little younger of course. Why did Takahara have this?
“See Keisuke-kun,” the man continued with a grin.
“You have Yamada Ryosuke’s smile.”
