Because canon is revered and practically untouchable in its pure fluff romances, but fandom is a different story entirely. We watch canon for canon and the fans want… Well, they really want to screw Shinichi. In so many ways and with so many people.
For myself, I have created a set of 3 qualities you must possess to enter Shinichi Kudou.
1) You are hot as hell.
2) You are intelligent enough to keep up with him.
3) You are badass enough to defend your claim.
Analysis for the most frequent semes with those qualities
Name: Kuroba Kaito (Kaitou KID)
Current Status: intellectual/friendly rival, occasional stalker, frequent annoyance, and #1 fandom pairing
Likes (about Shinichi): Sharing a similar regard for the sanctity of human life, these two often cross legal boundaries to assist each other in the face of those with less moral issues despite their differences. Kaito’s narcissism also adds to the physical attraction. Intellectual attraction could be considered instant and equal on both sides. Both Shinichi and Kaito have very few people who can keep up with their thought processes and less that can challenge them, and they treasure those who do.
Compatibility Analysis: High. The thief x detective aspect alone adds a spice to the relationship that attracts many followers of this pairing. Kaito has a very strong personality, great self confidence, and a strong will to protect and claim the people who are precious to him. A dark past and criminal past time make him an excellent candidate for more serious fics, and his boisterous and friendly personality in spite of it make him perfect for fluff and humor fics.
Love Rival Compatibility Analysis: Also high despite his tendency to irritate everyone who stays still long enough. He’s very flexible and open minded which opens him to most threesomes and moresomes. The twincest aspect appeals to most others in the pairing and he’s one of the few characters likely to add to the emotional stability of any pairing and be open with his affection. It also helps that any weirdness caused by the forming of a moresome is automatically eclipsed by Kaito's natural insanity.
Name: Hattori Heiji
Current Status: intellectual rival, stalker, best male friend (self decided), and #2 fandom pairing
Likes (about Shinichi): Severe man crush sums it up. I’m fairly sure he’s installed a Shinto shrine at his house with Shinichi as the god of detectives and masturbates at it every night. Shinichi is also probably the first person to not only match but beat him at his own game and of his own age group. Acceptable as a rival, but Shinichi’s morals and personal standards are what elevates Shinichi from rival to idol for Heiji. I’m sure Shinichi’s unsurpassed trouble magnet ability also brings out the best of Heiji’s protective side and a softer side as well.
Compatibility: High. Heiji’s frequently professed admiration of Shinichi and proactiveness in establishing a relationship between them despite their rocky first meeting make him likely to establish even more of a relationship. *wink wink* One of Heiji’s most attractive features is his protective nature. He is probably the most physically able of the teenage rivals and often employs those abilities to protect the people close to him. His obvious and open affection combined with his determination to keep those he cares for close and safe make him an excellent candidate for fluff. To a lesser extent, Heiji can be used in dark fic based on his incredibly creepy stalker tendencies. While all the boys (including Shinichi) have some degree of stalker tendencies due to personal or professional reasons, Heiji is the only one that will become your BFF and then reveal private, personal knowledge of you that you don’t even want to know how he discovered it.
Love Rival Compatibility Analysis: Average. Heiji’s a bit possessive and a traditionalist. However, he’s easily manipulated and would probably agree as long as it made Shinichi and other involved people happy. It is unlikely that any threesome or moresome that did not include Kaito as a buffer and co-conspirator would work.
Name: Hakuba Sagaru
Current Status: pretending Shinichi doesn’t exist and Conan is a normal but gifted child
Likes (about Shinichi): Holmes fan galore. The lack of canon Hakuba/Shinichi interaction makes this a tough analysis based mainly on each individual fan’s likes. The fact is Shinichi’s original arrogance aside, he’s a real life Holmes in the way Hakuba aspires to be. Hakuba does not take competition well probably since he’s had so little until Kaito, but as long as he could overcome it, he’d probably see Shinichi as someone to be admired (and smexed). Also, Hakuba has a tendency to look for the worst in people. I think he’s going to find himself pleasantly disappointed if he ever takes the time to get to know Shinichi.
Compatability: Average to high. It really depends on how well Kaito has trained Hakuba and on how much evidence he’s gathered on the ‘true’ Shinichi Kudou. If he’s able to overcome the blinders he places on most of his social interactions, Shinichi is very similar and admirable for Hakuba.
Love Rival Compatibility Analysis: Average. Much like Heiji, his comfort zone probably won’t survive anything that doesn’t have Kaito as a familiar and annoying buffer to drag him in and handle him.
Name: Akai Shuuichi a.k.a. Okiya Subaru? a.k.a. the mysterious zombie man
Current Status: I don’t even want to touch this with a 10 ft pole, but… fellow silver bullet.
Likes (about Shinichi): I’m pretty sure he’s Shinichi’s bitch now. I don’t know what face he’s wearing or where he’s wearing it, but I’m sure it was Shinichi’s idea. He appreciates the evil little bastard in Shinichi that lets him screw over the people that have screwed them over.
Compatibility: Average to high. Bonding over mutual hatred, hotness, and nicknames should not be underestimated. There is little canon interaction in this case and most of it is shrouded in mystery currently. However, there is a very strong mutual respect present along with similar thought processes and determination.
Love Rival Compatibility Analysis: Low. Due to a previously lost love, Akai strikes me as having commitment issues, especially with a younger man. I doubt he’d be comfortable with yet another person in said relationship.
Name: Gin (real name unknown)
Current Status: sociopath, would be murderer, enemy, and potential stalker
Likes (about Shinichi): Again, this pairing is so far out there, it can only have any basis in someone’s head. Hard to kill (though that could also be a turn off). Intelligent and challenging which usually ends up dead or trying to outdo him in sociopathic tendencies when Gin encounters either quality. I think the reason that most of the people choose Gin for a ‘dark’ pairing besides the obvious is his facial expressions he gets whenever he’s trying to kill the ‘one(s) that got away.’ It’s disturbingly like a drunk man spotting an equally drunk woman lying on his bed. While the mental image is disturbing, that doesn’t stop the 80s porn background music from switching on in your head. Bow chick wow wo~w.
Compatibility: Low. I think for Gin, it would be less about sex/romance and much more about power and control. He’s a murderer, not a rapist for a reason. I think that the thrill of power is about the only driving emotion he’s ever acted on. While rape is an act of violence and control, Gin strikes me as seeing that as messy and unsatisfying. People can recover from rape or torture, but murder is the be all, end all of power trips since you are ending everything of a person. He seems to want to kill everyone except Vodka, his simple lackey, and the Boss, an acknowledged as more powerful figure and is more interested in his position than his life. Gin’s not going to magically develop morals and warm, fuzzy feelings and any semi-realistic pairing here would reflect that.
Love Rival Compatibility Analysis: Looooow. Elimination of any rivals is almost certain. Two possible threesome partners that might survive are Akai and Kaito. Akai is the first ‘silver bullet’ he was obsessed with killing and he might try to go for a set. Also, the twincest factor might win him over to Kaito if only so he could become a voyeur. It fits his creepy vibe.
