When the military had finally found them, it had been far too late to save either man. The official report had been drafted and released to the public provided few details, stating simply that Major General Roy Mustang and Colonel Edward Elric had been captured and put to death by a rebel faction of the Drachman Military. It had been declared a National Day of Mourning when the two men were buried side-by-side in the Amestris National Cemetery with full military honors. The public at large was outraged at the murder of their beloved Fullmetal Alchemist, and those who had known Roy were equally infuriated at his death. Few knew the details, the truth not told in the official report, but all were just as eager for revenge.
It was hard to tell what the public reaction would have been if they had been able to read the real report; the one that was marked top secret and disappeared into the military archives.

It was a week to the day after the burial of Roy Mustang and Edward Elric that the third grave appeared in the National Cemetery. While the plots of Roy and Ed were each decorated by beautiful, elaborately alchemized headstones, this new grave was shallow and almost unmarked, a simple plaque with no name marking the previously empty spot beside Ed’s casket. Only those who had known him the best and loved him the most knew what the symbol carved into the tablet represented.
Technically, Alphonse Elric shouldn’t have been buried there, which was why few people knew, but there was nowhere else Risa would let him be placed. No permission was requested, no one who wouldn’t need to know was told, and the moon had been high as the suit of armor that had been the boy’s body for over half of his life was quietly laid to rest in the earth beside the casket of his beloved brother.

Alphonse had been silent at the funeral, unwilling to believe his brother was dead. Ed’s body was in such a terrible condition that Risa hadn’t allowed Al to see it, afraid of what the boy might do. Risa’s fears of the boy’s reaction were justified the next morning. Edward’s grave had been dug up, and the lid to the casket had been pried open, leaving large, hand-shape grooves in the lid.
The inanimate suit of armor was found by Winry Rockbell when she returned to Risenbool after the ceremony. It was lying amongst the ash and rubble of the boys’ childhood home, gloves still tightly clutching the lock of golden hair he had taken from Edward’s corpse. Al had committed a suicide of his own fashion; scratching away at the blood seal his brother had created, until his soul was finally released, freed to be with his brother once again.

OMAKE
They stood high on a hill, watching as the city burned.
“So, do you think there’ll be enough?”
“Maybe. Don’t really know, but its not my problem.”
“You know you managed to kill the only alchemists who might have been able to make it.”
“Maybe. If so, someone else’ll come along, eventually. Again, not my problem.”
“It must have been hard on you to keep up a character for so long.”
“Don’t underestimate me. I got what I wanted, all the while still following orders. You should have seen them at the very end. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more beautiful sight.”
“You saw them?”
“I went in with the Amestris military when they raided the building. Naturally, they were weeks too late to save either of them. I led the military straight to the room I had left them in, and, damn. Not even I had imagined that he would do that.”
“Who?”
“Mustang. I knew that I had broken him, but apparently he completely lost his mind when the pipsqueak died. It was amazing. I made sure that he would outlive the boy by several days, maybe even a week, considering how tough he was, but I never imagined that he would fuck the corpse like that. Makes me wish I could have stayed and watched him. He must have been like an animal, the pipsqueak’s body looked as if he had been mauled. Finally died while still inside the kid. You should have seen the looks on the faces of the soldiers. Couple of them actually vomited right there. It was great.”
“You really get off on this don’t you?”
“Of course. You wouldn’t imagine the ways I made Fullmetal suffer. Striking a deal with that fucked up Drachman ex-general was pure genius, although keeping him and his men in line was a pain in the ass. Having the body of a beautiful woman helped. I can’t even count the number of times I had to keep that idiot from killing one or both of them. I wanted them alive to suffer longer.”
“So, was baby brother a good lay?”
“Shut up. You love this as much as I do, admit it. Yeah, it was amazing. The very best was in the end, though, when I didn’t have to disguise myself as the woman, or various men. I could just fuck him in this body, and watch him cry. I don’t think he really recognized me, which is a shame, in a way. But it was still fun. The thing with the kids was that pedophile General’s idea, but it was pure genius. I got to watch the pipsqueak tear himself apart.”
“I still don’t get why you let them be together, at the end. You let Fullmetal die happy. You could so easily have just left him to die alone. From what I understand, he was half-dead when you threw him to Mustang, anyway. You probabily could have just sat there and watched him die. But you didn't. It’s very unlike you to be so generous”
“Humph. Well, it was fun, watching Mustang fall, even if it wan't part of the origional plan. The General’s men did a number on him, too. I’m amazed that he lasted as long as he did. Letting him think they would be freed soon, then forced to watch his little lover die was just too great an opportunity to pass up.”
“Its amazing, how quickly the war started after they were finally found. I don’t even see why you bothered, if there’s no one left who can make the stone.”
“Hell, I told you I was following orders, and starting the war was easy, we left all sorts of documents and pictures lying around that made it seem as though the Drachman government actually knew about our little operation. Had to piss Amestris off enough to make them think it was worth going through the mountains, you know. That’s probably the only thing that’s prevented full-out war before this. There’s a perfect shot of one of the high government officials screwing the pipsqueak. Now that pissed off people on both sides. It was great. ”
“What did you do with that General guy, anyway?”
“Let Gluttony have him. His men, too. Old bag insisted I let most of the kids go. Not that they’re likely to survive, anyway. Most of them will die in the war, or starve on the streets. Maybe they’ll be smart and whore themselves out. They should be good at that by now. Ones the pipsqueak took will probably end up the worst off of all of them. Who knows what all he was carrying by the end. Almost makes me glad not to be human.”
“I think that it’s sad, Fullmetal practically gave up his own life to save the lives of those children. Now there is all this death because of it, and most of those he tried so hard to save are going to lose their lives, anyway.”
“Don’t go all sentimental, it makes me nauseous. Besides, I had my orders, I was just having some fun while following them.”
“Right. Well, we’d better be getting back, Envy. Dante won’t be happy if we stay out here too long.”
“Fuck the old bag. I do what I damn well please, and you know it, Lust. She should just be happy that I did this job like she wanted. Fine, lets go. Not because you said so, but because I’m bored, that’s all.”
“Of course.”
The sun slowly sank below the horizon, the red and gold hues eerily mixing with the flames of the dying city below. The two figures turned their backs on the carnage and slowly walked off, eventually swallowed by the darkness of the night.
