Title: Seasons change, things won't stay the same
Recipient: oflights
Prompt Number: 61
Characters/Pairings: Mark/Eduardo
Rating/Warnings: G, none
Disclaimer: This fanwork is based on fictional representations of the characters in The Social Network; I make no claims of ownership of the characters or concepts.
Summary (or prompt scenario): Mark takes up gardening and horticulture as sort of an off-shoot of a sustainable farming phase. Like most things Mark sets his mind to, he quickly becomes obsessed and awesome at growing things. Eduardo is trying very hard not to be charmed by the whole thing.
Notes: Heartfelt gratitude to H. and A. for beta and cheerleading duty and always providing helpful input. Thanks H. for at least trying to get me to fix the perspective. And A. for for being awesome enough to have first-hand knowledge on transporting orchids out of Singapore, even if I ended up not needing it. ;)

Seasons change, things won’t stay the same

In my head the story surrounding this picture is, that a few years after the deposition Mark and Eduardo share a terribly awkward, but oh so courteous acquaintance with each other. Except for the sex they keep having, that’s not awkward as much as surprising and pretty fucking fantastic (if you ignore the short span of time after orgasms and before Eduardo hurriedly leaves, which Mark does).

Only one time Eduardo is so jet-lagged, that he simply passes out in Mark’s bed afterwards and Mark curls up next to him, secretly pleased. When Eduardo wakes up next, he finds Mark in the living room, sitting on the floor in front of some flower. Which, weird.

As part of their new-found acquaintanceship it was apparently decided that they should send dreadfully impersonal birthday presents to each other. In lieu of showing up for the actual celebrations. So when Mark’s birthday was coming up, Eduardo remembered Chris telling him how Mark took up horticulture as his A New Thing For The New Year-challenge. Eduardo told his assistant to send Mark some potted plant, “maybe something requiring a bit more effort than a cactus.” And then forgot all about it again.

Except Mark is apparently sitting in front said plant - a Japanese Camellia - almost a year later. And the plant is not only still alive, it’s in full bloom. Talk about unexpected surprises.

Then Mark takes him on a tour of his green house and garden, excitedly (well, for Mark anyway) talking about his farming plans; which vegetables are easy to grow and which he had to give up on, due to a lack of time. And all the things he wants to plant next. And Eduardo realizes that Mark isn’t really interested in the flowers aspect of horticulture and only kept and took care of the Camellia, because Eduardo gave it to him. It’s not even that big of a deal, but it gives Eduardo an overwhelming amount of feelings nevertheless.

And then they lived happily ever after, only eating vegetables they grow in their own garden. Basically. ;)
