FILL: Introduction to Social Interaction (Part 3 of ?) anysomething March 11 2011, 08:04:30 UTC
In the library, they run into Troy and Abed, who are trying out different friendship handshakes, slapping chests and bumping fists and hopping on one foot. Mark only barely resists the urge to snort at them. They look ridiculous.

"It's you guys," Abed says in his toneless rapid-patter. "I'm still trying to figure you out. I would say that you're part Disney movie, but I can't decide which one. Still, you look simultaneously tormented by issues that a Disney movie wouldn't usually touch. And I guess you're both super-smart, so I think I'm leaning towards parts Jennifer Connelly and Russell Crowe in a Beautiful Mind and Zach Braff and John C. McGinley on Scrubs. And Sherlock and Watson, but the BBC version, not the Robert Downey Jr. version."

"Dude," Troy says. "Which one is Jennifer Connelly?"

"Tall, dark, and handsome."

"Oh. Gotcha. See, when you said Jennifer Connelly, I thought of Labyrinth, and now I've got this gross picture in my head of David Bowie in tights. The dude could dance, though." Troy looks toward the ceiling, seemingly trapped in visions of David Bowie's pelvic thrusting.

Eduardo looks intrigued by this. Mark isn't getting any of the references, except for Scrubs, which he feels is inaccurate. He's also picking up some kind of insinuation from the Beautiful Mind reference that he and Eduardo are like a couple which -- inaccurate is not a big enough word. They've only been friends for like a week, anyway, and it's not like there's anything going on between them, because they haven't even had the time for that, and the fact that they'd have anything at all is -- it's --

"I loved that movie," Eduardo says.

Mark narrows his eyes. "Which movie?"

"Labyrinth. I like the puppets. And Jennifer Connelly." He grins.

Mark lets this slide and tries not to vocally pass judgement, since it seems that not liking Labyrinth (it's like a bad trip, what the hell) puts him in the minority.

"We'll see you guys later," Abed says. "I need to go give Jeff's shirt a test run."

Eduardo raises his eyebrows and looks to Mark. Mark shrugs, and Eduardo laughs. "How do you 'test run' a shirt?"

"No idea."

They find a table in the back of the library to work on their assignment. For the conversation project, they decide to talk about food-

"Hola, me llamo Mark."
"Hola, me llamo Eduardo."
"Tengo hambre. Voy a ir al restaurante."

-and finish their conversation in no time. The two of them leave together, chatting amiably about how much easier Greendale is than high school was, and Eduardo stops abruptly in front of the room where they usually hold study group.

Through the glass walls, they can see Jeff and Pierce are sitting at the table, about a thousand pages of yellow legal pad crumpled like snowballs laid out in front of them.

"I wonder what that's about," Eduardo says, moving to push his nose against the door. "That can't be their conversation for Spanish, can it?"

Mark shrugs. "I'm not looking forward to it, whatever it is." Eduardo chuckles and walks Mark back to his car.

Mark realizes how couple-y this is, Eduardo walking him back to his car in the dark, and he suddenly feels terribly awkward. He walks a few steps in front of him, his back rod straight. Eduardo probably thinks he's weird. Or mad at him, maybe. Eduardo's always giving him these looks, like he's worried that he might be pissing Mark off.

"We don't, um, come off like we're a ...ah...together, do we?" he asks, finally reaching his old Taurus and leaning against the side. What Abed had said had been eating away at him for the past few hours, and the sight of Eduardo looking at him half-expectant, like he's doing now, makes his stomach twist with anxiety. "Because I'm not - that's not -"

Eduardo flushes and chuckles awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck. "N-no, man, no. I know there, uh, isn't really a precedent for this kind of thing, but Abed can be wrong, too."

"Right," Mark says, nodding curtly, and lowers himself into the driver's seat. "See you tomorrow."

"Hasta luego," Eduardo replies, still scratching his neck, and waves with his free hand as Mark's car pulls out of the parking lot.

This is AMAZING. As an avid fan of both fantoms, I think this is a perfectly seamless blend of the two. You've done a great job. I hope you have some more left in you, even after all these months!
