Dustin just laughs and steals more of Mark’s chips.
Dustin’s family only moved to Palo Alto two years ago, and thanks to the annual trip to Florida and a string of coincidences this is the first time that he has ever met Eduardo. So far Dustin is being disappointingly cheerful about the whole thing. It’s kind of getting on Mark’s nerves.
“It’s not just me,” Mark insists. “He only talks to me when he’s practically forced to.”
“Well that’s just ridiculous, I mean you’re so welcoming, sitting over here hoarding the chips like some kind of incredibly welcoming chip ogre.”
“I wish you were in Florida.”
“Me too.” Dustin sighs wistfully. “I could be playing bridge with Esther and Gladys right now.”
“Oh, Mark,” Mark’s mom says in a singsong voice, drawing his name out so that it has multiple syllables. He knows that she’s fake smiling at him before he even turns around. “Don’t you think it would be nice if you introduced Dustin to Eduardo?”
“Do I have to?”
“Yes.”
“Mom-”
“Be nice.” She leans right down and pulls at the sleeve of Mark’s t-shirt, as though she’s trying to smooth out the creases or something. “Remember our deal,” she says quietly.
Oh yeah. The deal. The deal is basically that if Mark is nice to Eduardo all summer then his mom will buy him a new laptop when school starts again. Both Mark and his mom are completely aware that this is ridiculous, but Mark really wants the new laptop, and Mark’s mom really wants Mark to get along with Eduardo.
“Hey Dustin,” Mark says in as flat a tone as he can possibly manage, because he may have agreed to be nice but he never agreed to be happy about it. “Why don’t I introduce you to Eduardo?”
“Well that sounds like a great idea.” Dustin grins at Mark and keeps grinning even when Mark stamps on his foot.
“Good.” Mark’s mom pats him on the shoulder and smiles properly. “Could you also please tell your sister that I would like her help with something inside? Thank you.” Mark’s mom strides back to the house before Mark can say anything else.
“You are literally the worst,” Mark says. Dustin springs up out of his chair and pulls at Mark’s arm until he stands up too.
“Well if I’m literally the worst then I guess Eduardo can’t be that bad after all, can he?”
Mark pushes Dustin in the direction of his sister and Eduardo. “Who even invited you here?”
“Your mom.”
“You know it’s not an insult when it’s true, right?”
“Actually I think that makes it more of an insult.”
“Hey Abby.” Mark pulls lightly on his sister’s ponytail as he and Dustin reach the table where she is playing cards with Eduardo. “Mom wants you inside.”
“In a minute, I’m totally winning.” Abby bats Mark’s hand away and stares at Eduardo, as though she’s trying to psych him out. Eduardo is clearly trying not to laugh.
“She wants you now,” Mark says. Abby sighs like this is the most annoying thing that has ever happened to her.
“Fine.”
“We’ll call that game a draw,” Eduardo says, putting his cards down on the table.
“Okay.” Abby smiles at Eduardo, grimaces at Mark, and then finally makes her way into the house.
“Hi, Mark.” Eduardo starts tidying the cards away as soon as Abby is gone.
“Hey.” Mark waves awkwardly and wonders how difficult it would be to fake heatstroke. Dustin snaps him out of his thoughts by jabbing his elbow into Mark’s ribs. “This is Dustin. Dustin, this is Eduardo.”
“Hi, Dustin.” Eduardo actually offers Dustin his hand. Dustin shakes it immediately of course and smiles at Eduardo like Eduardo is his new best friend because Dustin is a complete traitor.
“Pleased to finally meet you. I’ve heard so much about you, I feel like we know each other already. Mind if we join you?”
“Please do.” Eduardo laughs and Dustin sits down in Abby’s chair.
Mark doesn’t mean to glare at Dustin as he sits down, but sometimes he just kind of does it without realising.
“Do you know how to play bridge?” Dustin asks, taking the cards from Eduardo.
“Sure. I play it with my grandmother all the time.”
Dustin’s grin is actually sickening. “Perfect. Hey, is it cool if I call you Wardo?”
