The summer before senior year, Mark's parents force him to get a job as a pool boy. The son of one of his clients, a long-limbed, golden-skinned Brazilian boy, seems to have his eye on him, though Mark can't imagine why...

Mark’s not really listening to Mr. Saverin talk about cleaning the pool. Like, really, how hard can it be? You… use the net thingy to scoop up the leaves, right? The only thing he wants to be doing, really, is sitting in front of his laptop. But because he can’t be wasting his summer away (as if, like, really, he’s doing completely productive things!) and he needs to learn responsibility and the value of a dollar and whatever else his parents said that they’ve been saying for the past two years until his dad had the balls to actually set up a job for him and then plop him in front of this person’s house
