THIS IS NOT WEEKS PAST DUE SHUT UP

The long and short of it is that Miyako is theoretically acting from the end of her canon. Miyako was pulled right before the point where she goes downhill fast due to killing Makoto's grandmother. From there, in canon, she began to reject and push away everyone around her, even her mother. Then she later gave into the Lord of One Word and ceased controlling her own body - Miyako essentially gave up on living. From there, Tarou and her father both rescued her, literally and metaphorically, by acknowledging what she'd been going through alone and promising to stay with her.

Now, the steps looked the same for the most part in camp, but it doesn't quite end with the same results. Miyako hurt Watanuki when she was possessed which is the same as her first realization that her possessions harm not only her but those around her. Miyako is accepting of the fact that her possessions ostracize her from society, is taking her father away, and so on, to the point where death doesn't quite faze her, but it's another case when it hurts others. So, she started pushing others away which she was less than successful at, because people in camp do not give her the berth that she gets in canon. Miyako couldn't quite lash out and was subdued by Yoh, who ended up suggesting training in the Caves of Despair as a sort-of last-ditch effort.

A week of sitting in the dark and nothing else later, Miyako was forced to face a lot of what had been happening and her thoughts on it all. (Which is precisely what stopped my playing of her, because I did not sit down to figure them all out, like I am now.) The key problem for Miyako was that she was left to deal with a number of problems on her own, and they were all made to be her fault. No one took the time to understand her, and eventually she didn't want anyone to understand her. It's one of the key reasons why Miyako speaks so unnaturally. Miyako pulled into herself to keep from getting hurt anymore after her mother left. She was also certain that no matter what she did, she'd end up alone, because no one could take the time to understand what was going on with her. Miyako didn't shut down, so much as bottle a lot.

So, Miyako came to realize that all of this was not her fault and that she did not want to be alone. As much as she may act otherwise, Miyako is a little girl who needs affection and love, moreso than others so she can feel accepted. She doesn't blame anyone for how things happened and she doesn't really quite know what to do, having faced her own issues like she has. Miyako is used to acting in very unusual ways, unwilling to have others look after her unless they force themselves on her nor is she particularly open about looking after others, hiding it away in doing chores or cooking. So, being open and allowing others to be affectionate towards her when she can dismiss them is something she's going to have to figure her way around. Miyako is going to have to overcome her silent signs of acceptance of others first most likely.

The training did affect her ability to control her possessions. While Miyako didn't need more power, which is what it does in Mankin, she needed to learn to be able to control the power she already had. Miyako is still figuring out how to cope with being able to do what she needs to, but it restores some of the trust she lost in herself. She can allow herself around other people, because she can keep from hurting them. It does give her the ability to look after herself in a way, but Miyako never really had a concern about what happened to herself anyway. . . which is how this training came about.

As for how she'll play. . . Miyako is still a quiet and enigmatic girl that does better speaking in unsaid gestures. She's finally becoming slightly aware of how socially inept and awkward she is, and now having to learn ways around it. Miyako isn't pressured though. She's satisfied with how far she's come and anything beyond that is extra; she just might smile and laugh around others more.
