It snowed more than a foot so far and it's still snowing....isn't supposed to stop until sometime tonight.
I've been watching two small children who are sledding down a little hill at the library across the street. Started thinking about all the sledding we did as kids. I still have my sled.....well worm but in good shape. lol When my grandfather owned a farm out on Middle Road we used to go out to his pasture which had a nice, gentle slope to it. At the bottom was the pond. Dad would ride down the hill with us steering the sled. We really wore him out I'm sure!! As we got older we would go out to Shimek Forest where there was a nice steep hill. You could start at the top of the hill, go to the bottom, across the creek, and start up the road on the other side. Frequently the neighbor kids would go along. That was when the cold didn't matter so much. lol
Another winter favorite was ice skating. At one point we had a LOT of ice on the street and that was where I learned to ice skate with double runner skates made for kids. It was great fun!! A few years later Dad started building an ice rink in the back yard for us to skate on. It was a good size area and we had great fun!! He even put up flood lights so we could skate in the late afternoon/early evening. Prior to the skating rink we did some skating on the pond at grandfather's farm.
I can remember a lot of winters with a lot of snow as a child. There were always snow men and snow forts for snowball fights. My brother even built an actual igloo one year and there was a picture in the paper of Kevin and the dog (Viking - Norwegian Elkhound) in the igloo. Didn't go in too much for snow angels....didn't like getting snow down my neck. LOL
Another fun pastime was Christmas caroling in the snow. As a 4-H and Rainbow member we would go caroling in the evenings. Great fun to walk down the streets of town singing, stopping at various houses along the way. One time we just got together a group of kids and went on our own then came back to the house for hot cocoa and christmas cookies. Several times I also got to go caroling with friends in other communities. After Kevin and I had our own families and would all be at Mom and Dad's for Christmas the whole family would go caroling at several friends' homes and at the nursing home. Really miss doing all that.
As I got older I liked to just go walking in the snow when it was just kind of drifting lazily down and there was already snow on the ground. It was so nice and quiet and crisp. And the trees and shrubs would be covered and it looked like a fairy land. Now most of the time I simply admire it from indoors. lol Especially when it starts to get windy and it blows the snow in your face. Now the best part of snow is driving around looking at Christmas lights glowing through the snow on the trees and shrubs.
Well, that's all the nostalgia for now. Back to my mug of spiced tea. :-)
