So yes, my trip. It went well, we got in a bit late Friday, interesting talk. slept little and slept in the next day, was late for the first few presentations. But many of the rest were great. That night they made the mistake of having a seafood buffet and dessert bar. Piles of mussles, salmon, shrimp, and cheesecake (so good, didn't have time to go back for a fourth piece :'( I settled for my apple pie...) later, I was asked 'Do you ever stop eating?', cause I had been eating all day. Whtever, they are all a bunch of inactive wusses :P (I don't think anyone of them read this...).
The talk was by Art MacDonald from the SNO nutrino observatory. It was soooooo good. I loved it, he is great. After ward he put up with my questions about one slide where he showed the quantum physics reason nutrinos would change flavors in their flight from the sun (the ground breaking thing that they showed with SNO). It is really quite simple. Basically the eigenstate formed when the electron nutrino is produced is a quantum superposition of three mass states coresponding to the three flavours. This has a phase factor (of magnitude 1) wich shifts over the time of flight so that the predominent (and then likely measured) form measured could be any of the three by the time it reaches the earth. However earlier today I remembered something about conservation of some kind of leptonicity, having th nutrinos shift violates that, so I am a touch confused.
:) He was impressed I was in a 4th year Quantum course. He tryed to recruit me to do my graduate work at queens... he may have succeded. Graduate work at SNO = fun! But not Asia or Europe... *shrugs* years away, so I don't have to decide yet.
(He was so cool.)
Then I went out (despite having to present first thing the next morning) with some of the 2nd year astronomy students from SMU, we went to an irish pub, it was busy, but kinda fun. I went back early to practice my presentation and sleep.
I got a bit lost on the way, but got back, practiced and went to bed just in time for my roomates to get back and for us to talk existentialism and quantum physics till 2:30 am.
So presented the next morning, on 4.5 hours of sleep, but few people had recovered from hangovers so it was fine.
As usual, I talked to fast, but fairly clearly, I knew I couldn't slow myself down, so I just embellished my already info filled speach. there were few questions... that could be good or bad. *shrugs* but it is over!
After my talk there were two linked talks by some nice guys from SMU on beowulf clusters (bunches of computers stuck together). It was interesting and vaugly relevant to what I do, we exchanged emails to keep in touch. (I now have collegues. :))
A bunch of us UPEI students ended up ducking out early for a variety of reasons, including the tons of work to be done. And so noone had to ride in Prof. Opps' death car. To quote Kris, "Noone who drives a standard like that should be allowed to drive at 240kph", "He told us about how he outran the cops...", & "I am surprised his transmission still works after so much grinding"...
So I made it back just in time to go to Kungfu. Today we did 'circle self defense', basically, someone stands at the centre of a circle, and in turn each person attackes (reasonably) the person in the middle and they defend themselves. I accidently played a bit rough, but had a bunch of nice hits on me too. (2 kicks to groin, 2 hard hits to bad arm, 2 head to floors, 1 elbow in back, 1 elbo to jaw, 1 scratch to below eye, 1 strike to throat, 1 knee in eye, uncountable bruises to be.) It was so much fun :). I love playing hard like that, great release. I feel terrible now though. When I got to class I was tired, hungry, notious (car sick) and had a headache (lack of sleep does that to me). I now have that and more. But I am in a wonderful mood.
Except that I have a geometry assignment due tomorrow, and I still have to finish (hopefully for tomorrow) the quantum assignment I got an extention on to go to aupac. *hates school*
So, I should get to that... yes... of course... *checks email*

In your eyes, people see shards of ice
everywhere... You are cold and distant, pushing
away people that love you and truely care for
you! You want to be able to reach out and love
them but... You can't for some reason... You're
just too.... You :P Underneath that cold
exterior lies a warm, happy soul that wants to
let loose and have fun! Your sanctuary would
probably be anywhere up high where you can look
down on life below you, like the roof of an
apartment building... Your eyes resemble a
saddened, crestfallen person seeking out
attention, but doesn't know how to handle it.
However, you do find comfort from your friends,
they're always there for you, and they know the
REAL you :) Even though you do seem rather
cold, you can be very protective over something
you truely believe in or love. Let go of that
"tough" rep and just be you! It's
impossible to live life without some fun and
love ^-^
