The good, bad and ugly in The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of The People's Republic of China, from the perspective of a gweilo
why i miss HK:
*Streets composed entirely of shoes, flowers, birds, wedding shops etc… Convenient but surely bad business sense!?
*Being told “your Cantonese is so good”, after saying two words in Cantonese.
*Very fresh fish and meat, slaughtered upon purchase.
*Developing an obsession with lift controls and pressing the close door button 50 times. this one really make me laugh XDD why do we do that?!
*The cheapest and fastest Internet service in the world.
*Defunct shops which suddenly become fully functional supermarkets in two days flat (cue congratulatory flowers outside).
*School kids with backpacks bigger than themselves. In some cases I believe some of the kids could easily fit in their bags, though I’m yet to experiment. ahhh the good old days in primary school XDDD
*The Harbour National Day fireworks, with 100,000 people yelling ‘WAAHHH’. what?? japanese people do that TOO!! hahaa!! thats wayy more fun than just sit and watch =P
*Wearing a jumper when it's 20 Celsius.
*The ridiculously disciplined and law-abiding locals who refuse to cross on the red man, even if there is no traffic or police for miles. never seen anyone do that, maybe except me sometimes XDD coz im scared!!!
*MTR fun run challenges when changing trains at Admiralty. Chillax folks - they come every two minutes! HEYY 2mins late its 2mins late to wherever u need to go! thats make a big diff. beside if u wait for next train, u might not able to fight ur way inside.
*Islanders talking about the New Territories (20mins away), like it's the squalid and uninhabitable outback. YEAHH! what's with those people living in Sai Gon and Tuen Mun those places-.- sooo ridiculasly far..hahaha!!!
*Octopus card. Genius, and unlike Oyster, you can use it in shops and it doesn’t track you!
*Never being more than one hour's travel away from anybody. i really LOVE this fact!!!
*Mobile reception in tunnels and on the underground.
*Comedy product/shop/road names - e.g. Sod/Wanko/Man Fuk Road (funny for the first week anyway)
*Mirrored interiors in lifts so you can check yourself out before making a grand entrance. again, japanese has more mirror everywhere for people to look at than in HK..haha!!
*Getting excited if you recognise a single Chinese character ('Exit' being the classic example)
*Convenience - everything, everywhere. Anything on your doorstep 24/7.
*Countryside & lush beaches - HK is only about 10% developed!
*Soya milk cheaper than milk-milk - get in my belly yeah yeah yeah!! my vita milk XDDD
*The locals’ blind panic and a-run-for-cover when there's a drop of rain hey only american dun care about getting wet n mess up their hair and clothes!!!
*Locals donning 10 layers or Eskimo suits when the temperature dips to 10c, whilst you’re still walking around in a t-shirt.
*Kick-ass typhoons
*Undoubtedly the best public transport I’ve ever known - my bus turns up at 7:47am on the dot - so punctual it’s actually scary.
*The slang words you hear all the time - "AII-YAAH!" - meaning 'oh no!', "WAAAAAAH" - as in 'woah!!' and "WAAIIIII??" - informal 'hello' when on the phone
*Being the tallest person in any given room. Not all american are tall either -.-""
*Bamboo scaffolding - looks cool but lethal, though probably as safe as steel ones.
what i certainly don't miss:
*The nasty sweaty summer months - ridiculously humid, feels like there’s no air.
*Racism - seems Sikhs are at the bottom of the pile along with black, Indian and Philippinos. humm.i dun think black ppl r very discriminated, coz many people love them n think they r really cool!!!!
*The tax-free cheapness. HEY Tax Free is a good thing, that is one of the greatest reason why HK became such an important trading n stuffs city!!
*Pollution - stinks.
*Banks - 150 of them and none have a decent debit card. bcoz everyone use credit card-.-" and/or stores only take cash~~stupid!!!
*Ants and cockroaches - bastards. ahh..haha.how i miss them XDD its better than scary creppy spider!!!
*Chinese food - rank.
*Claustrophobia - small.
*Designer dogs and pampered poodles - cainine fashion statements are all the rage.
*ATV dude - the same announcer for every trailer, advert and ident on the English channel.
*Bread and milk - FULL of sugar. FULL of SUGAR?? r u talking about AMERICAN FOOD? haha~~
*People opening windows and blasting the air-con in January.
*Creepy old Western guys who’ve bagged themselves a 20-year-old local girl - it just creepy. heyy this happen in all asian country =P
*The crazy price of imported exotic luxuries such as cheese, cornflakes, cucumber, decent chocolate and proper mushrooms. humm.i dun think so O.O they r just in smaller boxes n stuffs. like one box of cereals can last me 2 bowls XDD
*Democracy - lack of it, HK is less free than you’d think. Not to mention the nutters next door (i.e. China) what the hell r u talking about?!
*Water - boil it, or expect the shits for a week. ummm... the only time i see people drink tap water is in america~~
*Moaning imperialist old ex-pats who know less Cantonese than me. Go home lame-os.
*"Copy Watch? Copy Watch? Rolex?" - nagging from the Indian touts on our road.
*"Sir, you need tailor? Make you nice suit, shirt?" - As above.
*Well meaning locals who raise their umbrellas as not to poke anyone else’s face, only to catch you full-on in the eyeball. HAHAHAAAA....laugh die me XDD this is sooo true-.-" just little bit taller than average ur head/eye are gone =P i hate rainy days in HK-.-"
hummm....there were lot of people responding to this on facebook, but then someone point out about racism in HK included to China chinese people, coz if you ask HK people are they chinese, they ALWAYS say "no i am from HK" and that guy thought we think being from HK made us more special or better than anybody else. well, not better than anybody else, but better than being catagorist as "chinese" sometimes!! at least esp, in HK. if HK is not better, why the hell soooooo many chinese people have to put their life in risk to try to illegal enter HK and live/work there, even give birth there?! and HK ppl have their huge reason for disliking them. maybe in America HK people should dislike Chinese ppl in America so much, but in HK, Chinese people take advantage of our system our benefit soo much that, actual HK people dun really get anything. all of their tax money goes to benefitting the illegal chinese people. thats just a simple example that why HK people do not like chinese people. that really doesnt mean we dislike every chinese people, there are many good nice chinese people, but there are also those come to HK n do bad things there!! anyway, maybe i made my point. i dun think between chinese and hk ppl are racism, just disliking people who kinda "distroying" hk!!
and philphinos people are the same. Some people think they are lower class just bcoz they are all house helper hired in hk. some people do not like them coz they secduce the husband, steal money and jewellery, abuse the childrens or the elderly, and some even do prositution at home when no one is home-.-"" but many people treat their house helper super nice also, bcoz they really love n take care of their home and children very well. its not always that bad!! and actually many of them has very high education, and very smart. they are just trying to seek out better life to live.
