First, excellent action shot - stuff flying through the air, you can see how the impact knocks both men back, etc.
Second, what happened - the man on the left struck the other guy's shield dead center, and the lance slid up, caught his visor, and wrenched visor+helmet off. The helmet was the same style as the other one - there's a bottom part that sits in front of your face below the eyes, and the visor attached to the helmet that covers the rest. The guy on the right ended up with mild whiplash and concussion, and actually finished out the rest of the tourney.
