«Vera Drake»
Vera Drake is a selfless woman who is completely devoted to, and loved by, her working class family. She spends her days doting on them and caring for her sick neighbor and elderly mother. However, she also secretly visits women and helps them induce miscarriages for unwanted pregnancies.
This dramatic story made me very confused. It is so strange, when you feel sorry for somebody and at the same moment you can't find an excuse for this person. Abortion in 1950-s was illegal in England (and it’s still illegal in Ireland!). Vera killed hundreds of little babies, “helping” young women. She thought that it is good. I can't judge her, because firstly I didn't live 60 years ago and secondly I wasn't in this horrible situation when you want to get rid of the baby. But I'm so glad that in our days abortion is available and affordable for all those women who need it!
