Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4 | Part 5 | Fragment 1 | Fragment 2

Yes, that is in fact how I number things when I write out of order. The next part is Part 0y and then after that 0z. I have no idea what my numbering scheme will look like if I decide to write something that happens between their junior and senior year when Part 1 picks up.

Zavier had the bad feeling that he was developing a crush on one of his classmates. It was the last class of the day, US History, and he was watching Isaac take notes out of the corner of his eye. He’d only known Isaac for a month, but Zavier felt like he’d known Isaac for years. They clicked. Which was probably why Zavier was falling for him.

As if sensing his scrutiny, Isaac looked over at Zavier. He gave a little smile and then a questioning look. He pulled out a half-sheet of paper, wrote on it, and tossed it over on Zavier’s desk.

What? The note said. Zavier grinned and wrote his reply.

Want to meet up after school? I want to stop by the bookstore and grab something to read at my grandparents this weekend. Zavier refolded the paper, and put it back on Isaac’s desk. Mr. Roberts continued to write on the whiteboard, his back to the class.

Isaac read the note and frowned. He quickly scribbled something and returned it to Zavier’s desk. I already promised I’d meet up with Luke this afternoon. Sorry.

He bit his lip. Zavier wasn’t sure he liked Luke, Isaac’s cousin. The guy was kind of an asshole. Luke was also arrogant, obnoxious, and completely ignored all rules of dragon social interaction. To be honest, Zavier was kind of surprised no one had punched him in the face or challenged him yet. The worse thing though was that he alternated between baiting Isaac and pushing him around. Isaac didn’t seem to mind too much, but it got on Zavier’s nerves.

Worse than that, Zavier had the sinking suspicion that the two cousins were bonded. Rumors certainly claimed they were. Then again, the school rumor mill also said that the cousins were abandoned at birth, that they had blown up their last school and their parents had shuffled them off to this one to cover up the scandal, or that they were heirs to the world’s richest family and were pretending to be normal teens until the assassins plotting to kill them could be dealth with. Needless to say, Zavier didn’t put a whole lot of faith in gossip.

Anyway, he couldn’t prove it one way or the other, which made having a crush on Isaac a bad idea. Casually bringing up bonding with Isaac just got him a weird look. There was no way in Hell he was going to say anything to Luke about it. Which put him in an awkward situation or wanting to know if they were actually bonded, but wanting to remain ignorant at the same time.

“Remember, there’s a quiz next Tuesday,” Mr. Roberts said. The class began to shuffle at their desks, putting papers in bags and closing their books. “We’re almost to the end of class so I’ll let you go...”

At that moment the bell rang. Mr. Roberts gave up and just motioned towards the door. People streamed out of the classroom. Isaac stayed near his desk, packing up his things. Zavier put his backpack on and waited with him while he packed.

“I’m going to meet up with Luke. We’re going to the game store to grab something to play over the weekend,” Isaac explained. “I’d go with you, but I already told Luke I would. You know how he gets.”

“Yeah, I know.” Possessive was too mild a word. It seemed to Zavier that Luke demanded Isaac’s full attention whenever they were together. Zavier wanted to say more to Isaac about Luke, but knew it wouldn’t be wise. “Can I at least walk you to where you’re meeting Luke?”

“Sure.” Isaac seemed happy for the company, which in turn made Zavier happy. Yep. Definitely a crush. They walked through the crowded halls, talking about getting together Monday at the library to study for the quiz on Tuesday. They wound through the halls, and went out the back entrance of the school.

Outside the weather was pleasantly hot, with just enough of a breeze to keep it from being oppressive. The back entrance opened up to a brick courtyard with picnic tables, planters, and bushes. Past the brick were a couple of basketball courts, small grassy athletic, and chainlink fences. People were quickly disappearing off school grounds. Zavier wondered where they were going a split second before he spotted Luke.

Luke was leaning against one of the brick walls of the school. He wore white sneakers, jeans, and a brown short sleeved shirt with a single gray stripe across the middle. The wind ruffled his hair. Even from a distance, the similarities between the two cousins was striking. Isaac might be a few inches taller, and Luke’s hair might be a few shades darker, but otherwise there was no doubt the two were related.

As Zavier and Isaac got closer, Luke’s blue eyes narrowed. That was another difference. Isaac had gray eyes and Luke had blue. Isaac was also more inclined to smile. Sometimes Zavier wondered if Luke walked around with a perpetual pissed off look on his face.

“Nice to see you finally made it,” Luke said as soon as Isaac stopped next to him. “Any later and we’d have to play dodge the jock to get home.”

“We’re going to cut across the athletic fields. It’s easier to get the game store that way,” Isaac explained.

“Yeah, and we don’t need an escort to do that.”

“Luke.” Isaac gave his cousin an incredulous look. “What is up with you?” Luke just shrugged, like his hostility towards Zavier was nothing. “No seriously, what the hell?”

“It’s fine,” Zavier said. It wasn’t fine, but Zavier didn’t want to be the cause of a fight between the cousins. “I should go.”

“Come with us,” Isaac said. “We cans top at a book store on the way home.”

“No.” Luke crossed his arms and scowled at Zavier. “I don’t want him along.”

“I didn’t ask you.” Luke reared back like he had been slapped at Isaac’s words. “I want him to come with us.”

“I should have realized it would only take you a couple of months to abandon me,” Luke snarled. Isaac’s face drained of color. He looked like Luke had just kicked him in the stomach.

“Luke...” Isaac started to say. Luke cut him off.

“I should have expected this. After all, as soon as you have more than me to choose from you were going to move on to someone better.” Isaac made a small sound and Zavier could feel his anger rising. “I just didn’t realize you liked them blonde and dumb.”

“That’s enough.” Zavier’s words cut through the air. Luke turned his mocking gaze to Zavier. “Don’t be an asshole. Isaac hang out with whoever he wants. He doesn’t deserve you talking shit about it.”

“Whatever. You’re just hoping you’ll get laid.”

It probably hadn’t even occurred to Isaac that their relationship could head in that direction. Zavier didn’t know what Isaac would. Would he freak out? Ignore Zavier? Suddenly turn awkward? How dare Luke just throw something like that out there.

He could feel the anger surge through him, so strong he could taste it in the back of his throat. Zavier had never been so furious in his life. Isaac was saying something to him but he couldn’t hear the words through the roaring his ears. The world narrowed down to Luke’s smirking face.

What Zavier meant to do was punch Luke. Instead he felt a surge of heat roll through his body. Luke’s eyes went almost comically wide. It was the last thing he remembered seeing before the world went white.

I love me some cliffhanger, BTW. :D
