Today, my friend and current roomate RJ came into town. He will be living with me for the next six months, and I am thrilled to have the priviledge of his company and to be able to see a familiar face in a country that despite being my homeland remains alien to me.
Today we visited the Chiang-Kai Shek Memorial Hall, a Temple to the generalisimo that brought Nationalist rule to the mainland. Despite my own personal views towards CKS, I was awestruck by the grandeur and history of the Republic of China dating back to Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. Seeing many of the relics and pictures mad eme really wonder of Madame Chiang-Kai Shek and CKS made me realize that despite everything, CKS is a real person with feeling!!!
just kidding, the man was a bastard. But visiting the park and the contradictory feelings that I felt towards it exemplifies the split state of the nation of Taiwan. About two blocks away from CKS Memorial Hall is the 2/28 Peace Park, a park and museum that memorializes those who were killed by the KMT regime under martial law.
