I just saw a new piece that repeated the often heard idea that the manufacturing base in the United States is going away and that we hardly export manufactured goods anymore.
So I just looked for the US manufacturing numbers (as of 2003).
Developed nations: 2/3rds of global manufactured exports.
EU: 43.4%
US: 10.8% (second only to Germany)
China: 7%
From 1980 to 2003, the US dropped from 13% to 10.8% of world total
(Note, in dollars, the US exported $587 Billion in manufactured goods).
From 1990 to 2003, annualized growth rates were:
US: 5.6%
Germany: 3.9%
Japan: 3.7%
From 1980 to 2003, China grew from <1% ($8.7 Billion) to 7% ($397 Billion). However, half of exports from China are shipped by foreign affiliates.
