Axel and Roxas discuss a mission gone wrong, only to be interrupted.

Morals in the Workplace

Kong. Roxas. Ksh. Axel. Kong. Roxas. Ksh…

“I heard you and Xigbar set a city on fire,” Roxas begins, passing the ball of light back towards the corner of Axel’s goal (the TV in the corner).

“Yeah, so?” Axel replies, smirking as he hit the sphere back with his old ping-pong paddle. It throws pink haloes around the white walls of Roxas’s room as it sweeps back towards him. The light disperses when it hits Roxas’s chest, pieces of coral and peridot colour floating like feathers. His paddle hangs loosely from his fingers as he stares blankly at his game partner and silence settles briefly over the younger’s chambers.

“What, do I win?” Axel asks eventually.

“Axel!” Roxas begins, baring his teeth. “There were innocent people in that city!”

The older Nobody shrugs lazily, twirling his paddle like a chakram on a battlefield. “S’what the Organization does, little buddy. Destroy worlds to get our hearts back.”

“Destroy Heartless to get our hearts back! There’s a big difference, Axel,” Roxas bites back.

“Is there?” a voice sings from the doorway. Both Nobodies turn to see their sole female member lounging against the white white door-frame, leaning a cheek on her deft fingers, looking decidedly bored.

Roxas’s eyes narrows immediately and though he can’t see it, Axel raises an eyebrow. Larxene never went anywhere near Roxas if she had the choice. Unless she has a knife up her sleeve Axel doesn’t know about, she’s here seeking him.

“What are you doing here, Larxene?” the Keyblade wielder asks, suddenly sullen.

“Doin’ the same thing you’re doin’, pipsqueak,” she laughs, her heels snapping against the metallic floor as she marches straight up to Axel. She brushes her body (warm, still smells of her leather coat) against his arm as she brings her lips up to his ear to whisper, “Figuratively speaking, but of course.”

His eyes narrow and his smirk curves his lips, beyond his control. The fingers holding the paddle twitch, hungry to touch her, undress her, but Larxene circles around his back and Roxas enters his line of sight again.

Shit. Something in him clunks in his stomach as the kid’s big blue eyes regard them both suspiciously. Larxene continues however, drowning out the memories of guilt.

“I just heard about the burning city too. I’m glad, Axel.” She’s stopped right behind him, in his blind spot, and runs a single finger from the back of his neck down his spine. He has to resist reacting, resist jolting away from shocks in his skin. He smirks again, half over his shoulder. He can practically see her playful ‘defeated’ pout.

“Here I was worried you were going soft on us,” she says as she walks back to his front side, briefly running a gloved finger along his jaw line. Her heels trace a path past Roxas on her way to the door, and she roughly ruffles his hair, throwing static through the blond’s spikes. The Keyblade wielder practically sneers as he glares after her, but Axel only manages a lazy smirk as he watches her hips sway.

“Oh, don’t you worry about me, Larxene,” he tells her, voice low like glowing embers.

“Mm,” she hums, waving over her shoulder. “I’ll be sure not to. Tootles, boys.” And with that, she’s gone.

“Axel,” Roxas says, throwing a disbelieving glance up at his friend.

“Yeah, sorry, what were you saying, kiddo?”

He has to duck when Roxas chucks his ping-pong paddle at his head, then can only watch as his younger companion portals away from his own room with a roll of his eyes.

Casting a glance around the silent chambers, then out the doorway, Axel can’t help but wonder how far Larxene might’ve gotten in the past few seconds. Maybe she’s just down the hall, but he can’t hear her heels. Maybe she’s playing hard-to-get and is halfway across the planet in the Dark City again. Or maybe she’s…

His brain snaps back to the more pressing matter at hand. Roxas, friendly neighbourhood Roxas, who ate sea-salt ice cream with him on top of clock towers wasn’t too pleased with his actions. You need to scotch tape this sucker up, his rationality, his survival instinct tells him. Don’t lose your investment of friendship so quickly over good sex.

With that figured out, Axel said what only could be said to the empty room.

“Well, crap.”
