St Nicholas day - can a 1700-year-old guy still be jolly?

I'm not sure the historical Saint Nicholas was ever jolly, but he's one of the most popular saints, primarily because of his reputation for kindness and generosity. Thousands of churches have been dedicated to him and he's the patron saint of such diverse groups as sailors and pawnbrokers. In modern times, we modeled an iconic symbol of joy and abundance - Santa Claus/Father Christmas - after him.
