*three years later*
“Come on, baby boy. It’s time for bed,” Jensen cooed as he picked up his son.
“Not sleepy,” the little boy mumbled, sticking his finger into his mouth. Jensen quickly removed the finger and kissed the top of his head.
“Well you seem pretty sleepy to me,” Jensen teased as his son started drifting off into sleep. “Come on, Dean. Let’s get you to bed.” Jensen carried the sleeping boy into his room and laid him onto the bed. He gave him another kiss to the forehead and brushed back his hair. As he turned to leave, a little hand stopped him.
“Why didn’t Papa come?” Dean asked staring up at Jensen with tearful green eyes. “It’s my birthday. I wanted Papa to come.”
“Oh, honey,” Jensen said sadly sitting down on the bed. “We’ve been over this, Papa’s in heaven.”
“Why?”
“He had an accident right after you were born. You know this,” Jensen murmured stroking his son’s black hair.
“What was Papa like?” Dean asked, his eyes drooping.
“He was a good man, honey. He loved us both so much. He loved you more than anything. He just didn’t get to know you that well,” Jensen responded kissing the boy again.
Jensen waited for another question, but found that Dean had finally fallen asleep. It had been difficult to choose his name. He had wanted to name him after his late husband, but after finding out all the information and dealing with court cases, he didn’t think he could. He had settled on the name Dean, from Jeff’s middle name.
“He asleep? The room is pretty much picked up,” said the man leaning against the door.
“Yeah,” Jensen sighed. “He wanted to know about his father.”
“Jen-“
“I know! I just hate lying to him, but I can’t tell him the truth. I can’t tell him what he did,” Jensen said his eyes tearing up.
“Come here,” the man said grasping onto Jensen’s waist as he walked over. “You are doing the best you can.” The man pulled him into a kiss.
“I’m just so tired. I’m tired of people calling me and threatening me. I didn’t know what Jeff did. I really didn’t. He was so good to me. I just had no idea. I’m tired of dealing with money. I never had to worry about that with Jeff. We always had plenty. Now all the money is to his victims. And I can’t get a job. No one will hire someone that is,” he used finger quotations, “mentally unstable. I get so scared sometimes that we won’t have enough food. I’m tired of CPS checking up on me and trying to take him away. I’m just so tired,” Jensen said crying softly.
Jensen had gone through hell after the whole incident. There were constantly victims coming forward and receiving some of Jeff’s money. Jensen had been forced to sell his house in order to pay them. He was currently living off of Jeff’s life insurance. Child protective services had been a constant thing in his life since birthing his son. They had been concerned about how well he was raising him after Jensen had returned from the mental facility.
“Have you thought about my proposal?”
“I don’t know,” Jensen said softly.
“Jen, I’ve got money. I can provide you with a good life. You won’t have to worry about that stuff anymore. Please, marry me?”
“Jeff-“
“Jeff is gone. You have yourself and your son to worry about. I want to be your husband. I want to be Dean’s stepfather. Jen, I can make things better. Just let me.”
“Alright,” Jensen said looking into his eyes. “Misha, I will marry you.”
Misha grinned. “You have no idea how happy this makes me. I must be the world’s luckiest man.” He leaned in to kiss Jensen softly.
“Well, we have been together for a year, and I guess marriage is supposed to happen next,” Jensen said looking at his hands. “And I would like another child someday.”
“If you are hesitant just tell me,” Misha said, stroking Jensen’s cheek.
“I just don’t know. It’s hard to decide. I do love you,” Jensen continued to stare at his hands. “I guess me marrying you would be best for Dean.”
“It would be,” Misha promised. “You know I love him as my own.” Misha put a hand on Jensen’s flat belly. “I would like to have one of my own with you too.”
Jensen gave a small smile and rested his own hand over Misha’s. “I would like that. Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For dealing with me. I know it isn’t easy. I know what I’m like. It’s just, the whole Jeff thing,” Jensen said wiping away a stray tear.
“I don’t blame you one bit what happened. I know it hurt you. I just want you to feel better. I want things to get better for you. I love you,” Misha gave Jensen another small kiss on the lips.
“You don’t mind that I won’t be able to work?”
“I may not make as much as your late husband, but I have more than enough money to take care of you, Dean, and our future children,” Misha rubbed circles on Jensen’s stomach with his thumb.
“Then where is my ring?” Jensen teased although it was still done with tired, cold eyes. He wasn’t expecting Misha to pull out a velvet box from his pocket.
“Right here,” Misha said proudly. He flipped it open to reveal a small silver band with a small emerald incased on top.
“It’s a bit much,” Jensen said softly.
“You don’t like it? I’ll return it,” Misha said immediately.
“No, no. It’s beautiful,” Jensen gave a small smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
Misha slipped the ring on Jensen’s finger. The phone ringing startled them, after they stared at Jensen’s finger for so long. “It’s probably just Chris,” Jensen said when Misha reached for the phone.
“That FBI guy?”
“Yeah, that’ll be him.”
“What’s he doing calling you? I thought he was suspended. Jen, if he hurts-”
“He’s not going to hurt me! He’s calling me because he always calls me once a week. And anyways they lifted his suspension months ago. He was cleared,” Jensen said irritably.
“I just don’t like him calling you. I can take care of you just fine!” Misha’s lips formed a thin white line.
“Why does everyone assume I need someone to take care of me? I’m an adult! Stop treating me like a child!” Jensen glared at him.
“Jen, it’s just everything that has happened to you-“
“Get out!” Jensen interrupted. “You don’t think I can take care of my child? You don’t think I can take care of myself? Then get the fuck out!” Jensen roared pointing towards the door.
“Jen, baby-“
“Don’t call me that!” Jensen screamed.
“Calm down. I didn’t mean that. I’m sorry.” Misha moved to wrap his arms around him but Jensen jumped back.
“I think you should go. I need some time to myself,” Jensen said calmly.
“Alright. I love you,” Misha leaned in to kiss him but Jensen pulled away.
“Bye,” Jensen said coldly.
Misha looked at him sadly for a moment before walking towards the door. “Tell Dean I love him,” Misha called back. Jensen merely nodded his head and crossed his arms.
With Misha gone, Jensen slumped back into his couch and buried his face in his hands. He didn’t like being this person. He didn’t like being depressed and cold all the time. He had to quit going to his therapist once money started running low. He knew he needed more help, but he couldn’t stand the thought of having Dean taken away from him. He needed him more than anything.
A knock on the door brought Jensen out of his musings. Jensen walked over to answer it.
“I thought I told you-“
“Hey, sweetheart,” a familiar voice said. “I’m home.”
“Jeff,” Jensen gasped.
