first off: if you've posted a review, i probably read it. might not have commented, but i did read it. i've read and thought alot about this ep... and i really really enjoyed it, cliffhanger and all. what! stop looking at me like that! and i was right. overall plotwise it also reminded me of Comes A Horseman (FW S3), so much so, i watched it shortly after!
first thing i wanted to say was that it took me a few moments for it to sink in that Sam was immune. i mean, form those words. can't really explain it any better than that. as i'd said,
bodgei came over and we watched it... i was probably talking or commenting, or laughing about something... so it took a few moments to connect all the dots and have the lightbulb go on.
that out of the way, i have to say this was definitely an awesome ep: i'd seen early early early spoilers where Sam orders Dean to leave and he does -- reluctantly. someone else told me they had been under the impression that Dean just cold-heartedly leaves Sam there. (well, not "cold-heartedly," that was my interpretation of the way she told it to me)
Jared does do emo!Sam very well, and this was no exception, fine performance. Bravo! and someone seemed to have forgotten two canon rules: do NOT piss off Dean Winchester, and do NOT insult/dis/attempt to kill Sammy. bad ideas all around. again, we were treated to the full range of emotions and expressions of Jensen. and in an ironic twist, Dean let the guy live who turned out to be guy!Meg. and Kripke? yaay for continuity with the cup of blood and contacting the Demon.
Dean again, had his usual wonderfully snarky lines, two of which registered as awesome: when Sam said that was the stupidest thing he'd ever done... "Well, there was that waitress in Tampa..." and at the roadblock, when the guy told him to get out of the car: "you are a handsome devil, but you're not my type" -- i know there are people out there who aren't going to like this, so stop reading: but i have to say this totally tells me it's canon he's het! *giggles*
and when Dean tells Sam he's not leaving -- that's the closest he gets to a chick flick moment. Dean really is tired -- he's been doing this for 23 years, and he's only 27. that is a lifetime of hunting and killing things, and he's had enough. the only catch here is, if Dean dies/gives up, the Demon wins. as
x5vale put it: ...the Demon wants to play with the guys, he wants to test Sam and wants to push Dean over the edge. He wants him [Dean] to get rid of the job, he wants him to turn in a cold blood killer machine, so that he will be totally disgusted by what he has become, he wants to weaken Dean turning him in what he hunts.
between this thought of the Demon testing the Winchesters, and the actual plot of the episode, the virus, i am again reminded of First Wave. many times i've compared Dean and Sam to Cade and Eddie (even posted a "Who Am I" question, describing a pair of characters. so many replies were "Dean and Sam" when in fact it was Cade and Eddie. The Gua (aliens) are here to scout out the planet -- theirs is dying, and they need a new one. only thing is, look at all the humans in the way! wow! so they run several experiments and tests on various people to determine if Earth is ready to be taken over. and they infiltrate everywhere -- the sciences, the arts, medical facilities, and especially the government.
but it turns out, in destroying Cade's life, killing his wife, and turning him into a fugitive, they created a man so determined to go through anything to prove his innocence, and to prove the aliens are here. he goes through the show gathering believers, who have seen these aliens, and maybe have had their lives touched by them as well. but along his path as a chosen one, the "Twice-Bless'd Man," the one who can stop this invasion, he has to expose and stop may experiments and tests.
this experiment is a virus that kills humans, leaving only the Gua alive. Cade writes in his journal: The Emerald City is Seattle, where a converted armory houses the labs of Vio-Zor, a company that specializes in microbiology. Mabus is the leader of the alien invasion on Earth. If he’s the devil referred to in the quatrain, then somehow Vio-Zor plays a part in the Gua plans for our destruction. Eddie uploaded a computer bug into Vio-Zor’s software. I’m going in to fix theproblem and find out what Vio-Zor is doing.
Cade gets inside Vio-Zor, only to discover their benign mirco-organisms are anything but. unless benign mirco-organisms cause hallucinations, irrational behaviour, ravenous hunger, and dying. they find out there is a virus by testing the one dead guy's blood. first, there was nothing. then it started totally consuming the bloodcells, obliterating them.
Cade: Are you saying viruses can hide?
Jagger: Hide, mutate, even learn. They're survivors. Preditors without equal.
Cade: You sounds like you admire them.
Jagger: Why not? The virus has existed for billions of years, humans just a couple of million. Who are we to say who shall inherit the earth?
and in a moment of revealing snark, as Cade and Dr. Kelly are dying:
Jagger: Please, you make bio-weapons to use on your own species. All I did was make it work for mine.
Dr. Kelly: Your species?
Cade: He's the one. The Gua.
Jagger: Yes. There really is an alien invasion, Victoria, and you helped launch it. I turned Revelation into an airborne plague that kills humans and not Gua. Tested it on Tim, and now I'd say it's mutated to its maximum potential.
Cade: That's why you had to keep us alive.
Jagger: Until now. There's enough virus in the air to start the epidemic as soon as the doors open.
as it turns out, after Jagger is killed and dissloved (as all Gua do when they die), they find an actual sample of the Gua blood, and make a vaccine. Dr. Kelly gives it to Cade, but not herself. Cade realises this after they've set the self-detruct sequence, and drop the fire door between her and him; the all-consuming fire will kill and obliterate everything up to the firedoor. Dr. Kelly saves Cade so he can continue his mission.
his final entry reads, In the war ahead, it’s not enough to worry about heavy artillery and nuclear weapons. Now, the smallest microbe can become an engine of death. I know the Gua will use any means necessary to bring about Armageddon. Dr. Kelly agreed to do research on a potentially lethal biological weapon, and the Gua almost turned it against us. As the limits of science and biology expand, let’s not forget the danger that’s inherent in every step forward. Just as the genius of Einstein and others helped create the atomic bomb, let’s pray our modern geniuses don’t inadvertently create the means to our destruction.
there are many times Cade wants to give up, and throw in the towel. he's tired of fighting the aliens -- who look just like human, but beautiful and flawless -- who have the perfect disguise: they blend in and appear human, working to foward their own ulterior motives. if Cade gives up, the aliens win, and take over the Earth. if Dean gives up, the Demon can do whatever it is that he has planned with Sam and the others like him.... unopposed.
