FK/FW FanFic: Stalemate (Night Waves 6)

Mar 10, 2006 13:15

There are numerous plot pieces I used from "The Vessel," episode #316, written by Daniel Howard Cerone, "Requiem," episode #317, written by Bill Conway, "Checkmate," episode #318, written by Paul Eckstein and David Wilcox; and "Black Box" written by David Wilcox. ©2000 ... So that's why the plot sounds so familiar.....

Night Waves 6: Cade is caught in the clutches of Mabus, but does Mabus know what Cade is? (Note: events in this fic run parallel to the events at the end of season three of FW.)

It was just about dark, but I could tell that Eddie’s trailer looked like it had been through hell. I knocked anyway, and then entered.

Eddie was at his computer. Business as usual.

"Hey Eddie," I said, not wanting to scare him. But he jumped anyway.

"Katy! Where have you been?"

"Need to ask you something," I said. I noticed something about the trailer didn’t quite...smell right, but I thought that could wait. Eddie stopped typing and looked up at me.

"Where the hell is everyone? All the vampires have gone underground, I can’t sense anyone. And no one knows anything about Raven Nation. It’s like they just disappeared off the face of the Earth."

"They did," said a deep voice from another part of the trailer. I turned. That was the smell - a Gua. This, however, was not Cain, the alien acolyte Cade and I met some time ago on a stake-out. Something was very different, even though the body was the same. This was Joshua, who first inhabited the husk, as they called it. Wonder how that happened.

"Joshua. Welcome back."

"The vampire," he said. It was a statement, making sure he knew who I was. I nodded. Something was not right here. And something - someone - was missing.

"What do you mean, they did? And where’s Cade?" I demanded, my eyes glowing. But my fangs did not emerge; Gua had that affect on vampires.

Eddie turned around on his swivel chair from the computer.

"You might wanna sit down for this," he suggested.

I knew something was wrong. "I’ll stand," I said.

"Mabus has Foster," Joshua started.

"Mabus has taken Jordan too," Eddie added.

"So what’s the plan to get them back?" I asked. Cade Foster was no ordinary person. Aside from being Nostradamus’ "Twice-Blessed Man," Cade was the best thing that happened to me. And he was also a vampire. Now, the Gua knew what Cade was, I was certain. And we were in serious trouble.

"We’re working on that," Eddie said. "It’s not as easy as it sounds, Katy. I’m sorry."

"Sorry for what?" I asked. When I first met Jordan, she didn’t like me, she didn’t want any part of me, and she once tried to convince me that Cade wasn’t returning. I guess that should have prepared me for what Joshua told me.

"Mabus can transfer consciousness by touch - he’s powerful enough to do that. His consciousness is inside Jordan."

That was a new one, I thought.

"There’s a quatrain right here that says using electromagnetic waves, we can get Mabus out of Jordan. I just have to finish tweaking this thing," Eddie told me. I looked at Joshua. The tall, dark warrior rose and began to take stock of what was in his bag.

"So when do we leave?" I asked.

"I go alone," Joshua said.

"Not this time. Mabus now knows what Cade is."

Joshua turned to face me. His question told me he still didn’t know from that time long ago when Cade and I shut down a husk lab of vampire husks. And even if he knew then, he certainly didn’t know now. I wasn’t going to argue. Cade’s undead life was on the line, and I needed him. I’d gone too long without.

"What do you mean, knows what Foster is? He’s human."

Without missing a beat, I replied, "He’s a vampire."

Joshua was silent, probably retrieving that lost bit of information that told him he already knew that. When he spoke, the words were encouraging, but the overall concept was not.

"Mabus’ compound is underground, lit by artificial light. Vampires are only affected by sunlight," he said. I nodded. He looked at me. "We leave momentarily."

"You can leave now," said Eddie, handing Joshua something that looked like a box with a bunch of wires coming out. What did I know? Electronics was Eddie’s thing, not mine. Joshua put the device in his bag. Eddie gave me a cell phone. Joshua left the trailer.

"I’ll bring him back, Eddie," I said.

"And Jordan too," Eddie added.

"Yeah, her too," I sighed, and went out to join Joshua on our mission to Mabus’ compound.

The Beast had not appeared since I’d been captured. Although I’d expected that, it was disconcerting to me. As a vampire, my strength matched the Gua. But since being captured by Mabus - who occupied a human body - none of the weaknesses vampires had around Gua surfaced.

I could hear the blood flowing, and it made me hungry. Since the body was human, the blood smelled sweet and didn’t make me nauseous. But I hadn’t been able to feed, and that kept me weak, and at a disadvantage.

The body Mabus currently inhabited was one that I’d wanted to hold, caress and kiss for a long time now. But it was the combination of Gua DNA and a human host - as opposed to a husk - that had caused the desire - the Beast - to go into hiding.

Either Mabus did know what I was, or also enjoyed the dark, for thankfully I hadn’t seen any hint of sunlight in this underground prison.

The catch to all this was the humans called me the "Twice-Blessed Man," and some of the Gua thought I was the Chosen Human that would kill Mabus.

The problem was - Mabus was wearing the body of my friend and ally, Jordan Radcliffe.

Twice before during this captivity, she’d tried to seduce me, and when I heard the door to her chamber swish open, I knew she was here to try again.

"I do so hate to see you chained up," she said, leaning her body up against mine. The chain she referred to was a collar around my neck that was tethered to the wall. I felt like an animal, and if the Beast had shown itself, it wouldn’t have been far from the truth. My hands were cuffed in special Gua handcuffs that even I couldn’t break free from.

"But I can’t have you escaping, can I?" Her long nails trailed down my cheek and neck. My eyes started to glow, as much as I willed them not to.

Her nail stopped mid-stroke as she stared, but was silent. One hand reached up and unlatched the collar. Then she undid the cuffs and moved to stand in front of me, and placed my hands on the curve of her bottom. She placed her hands on my shoulders and kissed me deeply. My eyes still glowed, I could hear her blood coursing and her heart pounding, but my fangs remained retracted. I was ravenous, and did the only thing I could. I kissed her back.

Unsure of who had the other in a trance, we’d shed our clothes and were making love on a bed inside the inner chamber. When we were sated, our bodies entangled with each other and the sheet on the bed, I reached out and stroked her cheek.

"Jordan," I whispered, my eyes still glowing, but still no fangs. It was her Gua essence that kept the fangs in check.

"I know what you are, Foster." The voice was Mabus, and my eyes returned to normal. Then she was gone. I jammed my legs into my jeans and pulled my t-shirt on and returned to the outer chamber.

She was already there, waiting for me.

"Your mind is very powerful, Foster. And now a part of it is in here," she said, caressing her abdomen. "A part of you is growing inside me."

I almost laughed. She only thought she knew what I was. Vampires couldn’t reproduce the same way as humans. But if she didn’t know that, I wasn’t going to tell her.

"No," I whispered, hoping I sounded appalled instead of amused. "You stay out of my mind."

The door slid open, and I was expecting more of Mabus’ guards to come in and capture and try to subdue me at their masters’ wishes. Instead, it was Joshua, and Katy. I was relieved to see them, knowing they’d come to get me out past the security, but at the sight of Katy, I felt guilty, especially after what had just happened.

"We don’t have much time," Joshua said, grabbing Mabus, hauling her over to the table, and forcing her to get on it. Katy was over by the door, sealing it with the computer keypad on the inside, and then moving some heavy equipment in front of it.

Joshua attached some sort of pads to either side of Mabus’ temples, and then activated a device. Both Katy and I had to cover our ears, because we’d heard the high-pitched frequency that went right to Jordan’s brain. She screamed, sat up, and ripped the pads off her head.

"Cade? What the hell am I doing here?" Jordan demanded.

"Is that really you?" I asked. It had sounded like her. I went over to her, and Joshua moved away to stand by Katy, and to give me some room. I leaned down close to her face, and suddenly my eyes glowed, I heard her blood, and my fangs grew. I knew she was back. I moistened my lips, and bent down and kissed her neck, and almost bit into the soft flesh but Joshua’s voice hit me like a cold shower.

"We must go, Foster."

"Jordan comes too," I said. I glanced up at Katy, and the look on her face told me she knew what had happened between me and Jordan before, as well as just then. I looked away. I’d face her later I knew, but for now, we had to figure out how to get Jordan out of there.

By the time Mabus’ guards got through the door, we had our plan.

"I am escorting these prisoners to another level. Allow me to pass." Jordan said. It sounded like Jordan to me, but the guards still thought it was Mabus. How could they have known what happened inside the chamber while they were still out in the corridor?

"Yes, Lord Mabus," one said, as the three allowed us to pass.

Accessing the correct codes at all the security checkpoints, Jordan led us out of the compound. Once out in the dark, Katy’s voice seemed loud in the eerie night silence.

"We have less than an hour ‘til dawn. We have to make tracks."

"How far away is the trailer?" Jordan asked.

"About an hour if we move quickly," Joshua said.

"Katy and I will meet you there," I said, looking at Katy. She smiled, knowing my intention.

Jordan and Joshua exchanged glances. I could tell Jordan did not want to be left with Joshua, but I assured her we’d see them again at Eddie’s trailer. Glancing a distrustful look at the former acolyte, she finally agreed.

"I’m so sorry, Katy." I started.

"I know," she said. "It’s ok. It’s the way of vampires. We go after what we want. And it’s how you knew she was Jordan again."

We were at Eddie’s trailer minutes after we left Jordan with Joshua, and now it was about an hour later. They should be arriving at any moment, and the dawn was fast approaching. Eddie had crafted a crawl space under the bunks for me that shut out all the light, and I wondered if it was big enough for Katy and I. Actually, thinking on it, it didn’t really matter. Once vampires were sleeping for the day, it was if they slept like the dead.

I told Katy of this, she agreed to the arrangements, and crawled in the space to wait for me.

"Bed time, Eddie. Don’t want the Twice-Blessed man burnt to a crisp, do you, man?"

"No way, pal. You two get in there, I’ll deal with Joshua and ...it is Jordan right?"

"Yes, Eddie, it is. And even I’d trust me on this," I said, and crawled in to lay down in the cramped space next to Katy. I turned to her.

"I do love you, I hope you know. I’m glad it was you that rescued me," I said. She had just enough space to reach out and stroke my cheek, her fingertips tickling my face.

"I know," she whispered, and then kissed me. As we separated, we could feel the dawn touching the horizon. And then we slept.

"Good job, Foster," was the first thing Eddie said to me when I rose the next night. Katy must have gotten up a few moments before me.

"Thanks, Eddie. What for?" I couldn’t tell if he was serious or sarcastic.

"You were right, it is Jordan. I’m serious, man."

"Where’s Joshua?"

"Went to fight this thing his own way - whatever that is."

"And Jordan?"

"Recovering. She’s outside."

"Katy?"

"Outside observing."

"She still doesn’t trust Jordan, I guess."

"Guess not."

"Eddie? Thanks for getting me."

"Why wouldn’t I? I’m still in this thing."

I smiled at him, and went outside. Katy was right by the trailer door, Jordan off in the distance.

"She knows I’m here," Katy said. I nodded, but had my eyes on Katy. I turned her to face me, and bent down and kissed her. Tenderly at first, and then it deepened. Our lips moved away from each other and I trailed kisses down to the soft tender part of her neck, and I felt her fangs on my neck. Sweet relief came when she bit into me and I into her. The blood filled me, and I drank like a I’d been trapped in a desert. In a way, I had been.

When we separated, she kissed my lips lightly, and we both turned back to where Jordan was sitting.

I watched as she stood up slowly, turned and came back towards the trailer. She walked as if in a trance, and almost passed by without stopping.

"Jordan?" I said, reaching out to her.

"I’m sorry, Cade. It’s only seven days away," she said cryptically. She was still speaking as she passed by and off into the darkness. "Seven days, Cade. You must stop it. I can’t stop him. He’s too powerful." And her voice was gone, and Jordan had disappeared into the darkness.

"It didn’t work, Katy," I whispered, the realization of what Jordan said hitting me. "Mabus is still in her. It didn’t work." I felt deflated, defeated.

Could I really stop the First Wave if the Second Wave was only a week away?
