Angels in Horse Hair. Part 1...

The driver and passenger doors of a white Oldsmobile opened up. Out stepped two figures, one belonged to a middle aged woman. The other was of a skinny, fragile, young girl, not much older than twelve years of age. Her face was worn and tired, as her red and puffy eyes stared at the ground below. She didn't appear as a normal twelve year old should, full of life and energy. Yet as one who had given up on life.

The two started up the long gravel drive way. On the left was a large fenced area. Made up of mostly dirt, rocks and horse manure, there was no grass to be found. A few Juniper trees were scattered here and there. Wrapped in chicken wire, in hopes to keep the herd of horses from chewing on them. One dead tree stood near the fence show the results of what the horses chewing could do.

This herd was made up particularly of bay arabians, with a few chestnuts and whites. In addition there were two draft horses and one miniature pony. Though many of the horses were similar in color, each one was unique in their markings. One of the two massive draft horses saw the woman and the girl walking up the drive. Cantering over to meet them he stopped at the poll fencing and nickered, reaching his large head over the fence. This giant seemed to be trying to get the attention of the pair, perhaps to get a treat of some sorts.

Slowly leaving the woman's side, the fragile girl ventured over toward the young gelding. Not fearsome of this mighty animal (as many would be) she reached out her little hand stroking his big white muzzle. She touches his soft white hair, as he nibbles at her fingers searching for a treat. A smile is starting to creep up on the face of the young girl. Finding nothing in the small hand he backs away. Blowing air out of his nostrils, as if to welcome her to the ranch. Spinning around he takes off back to the herd, bucking and kicking out. The fragile girl's eyes light up for just a moment and she lets out a quite laugh.

Realizing what she has done she looks around for the woman. Up ahead the woman walks slowly, and hasn't seemed to hear the giggle come from her mouth. She walks swiftly to catch up with her. Falling back in step with the woman, her eyes return to there tired look. I won't like it here, there is nothing that will make me like it here. Her gaze goes back to the ground in front of her. Now lagging behind, the two round the corner to the top of the hill.

At the top the young girl, now holding tight to the woman's leg, glances up. Meeting her gaze is the figure of a tall lady coming over to meet the pair. She is wearing dark blue jeans and a light t-shirt. Long black hair braided down her back is partially covered by a hat. The girl can feel the lady's eyes on her, even through her dark sunglasses. The lady greets the two with a big smile, introducing herself. The young girl hates her right away. Why does this lady seem happy? Life isn't happy. The smile is fake to her.

Now the eyes glance around the area they have come to. She sees the fenced area where she had met the big gelding. He is not at the fence line, instead a few other horses are there, looking for attention. A large brown barn stands close by, it smells of fresh hay. Probably for the horses, that are looking strait at her and through her. She keeps her eyes moving around the tall lady that is now talking to the woman. There is a grassy area on the right of the lady. A picnic table is sitting there, and someone seems to be bathing a horse. Another girl, that is about her age, this one is different though, full of life. Playing in the water, while bathing her horse. This girl stops for a moment to wave at the young girl still clutching to the woman's leg. Why are they all so happy, the young girl thinks.

Behind the grassy area is what looks to be a round building with no roof. Studding the building a movement catches her eye. A horse and a rider are in another fenced area. This one is different though, it doesn't have rocks or dirt. Some sort of grey sand instead, also inside are a few blue barrels and orange cones. Adjacent to the arena is a little gravel road, leading up to the back of the the property, to another barn and more horses.

Her eyes go back to the person riding in the arena. A little chestnut horses is in there trotting big circles around one of the barrels. His eyes seem full of energy. He lets out a small buck as if to say yeehaw... and the rider lets out a laugh. I hope I can do that one day... The woman breaks her thoughts when she hears her name. She is being introduced to the lady with the black hair and the smile. Looking up and nodding for a moment her eyes head back to the ground. They are talking about her riding horses. Her heart skips a beat, no I won't listen. It will all be lies. No one tells the truth. No matter what they say it won't come true.

A hand reaches out pulling her off the woman's leg. It is the woman and she is telling her to go with the lady. How could the woman do this? Just leave me with a stranger. A person that neither of us have met until now. Promises that imply everything is going to be alright fly from the woman's mouth. Ha, thats what you say everyday. Nothing is fine, don't you get that? It never has been and it never will. The young girl wants to scream to the woman. Wanting to run away and cry the skinny, fragile, young girl nods her head to the woman, who she calls her mother. Slowly she turns to follow the lady with the balck hair and the smile...
