Joanna was only three years old when it was discovered that she could generate fire. From then on, her life became on gigantic prophecy.
When Joanna was eleven, she discovered what it was that the Sisterhood had taken her in for. No one had held that much power like she had before. At a mere thought, she could encase her body in complete flame, and raise temperatures beyond that of the sun or of any start. And there was no telling how far she could go before she burned herself out. And it was clear that her destiny was something special, that she would be the one to take up the mantle of Defender of the Light to battle the forces of Darkness.
She passed her trials and became a Witch when she was only fifteen. That was the day she realized she would never be free from whatever destiny people had decided to hold her in high esteem for. She was no savior, she wasn't going to save the world. All she could do was generate some fire with her hands, encase her whole body with it. Even with a thought, as she later realized, she could take out a large majority of the planet, incinerating everything and even everything's remains. With her symbol of the sun magically burned onto her left hand, she felt marked, trapped. And there was only one person who could stop her, if that person could ever be found. It was against them that Joanna was to battle, to try and decide the fate of the world. Frankly, she wanted no part of it. So she left.
Taking an assignment that required her to go undercover and almost borderline forget who she was, she took it, and left whatever whispers of prophecy behind her. No one ever discovered where she had gone. She had gone all the way up to the Head Sister, and after being sworn to secrecy, she had departed. She had wanted an out, and she had gotten it, all at the age of seventeen.
Joanna more than anything wanted to be normal. San Fransisco was perfect for her powers. She would never have to worry about losing her spark, because it was just continual heat circulating the whole place. She could absorb it and never worry about what she had to do to conduct a fire. Here was a place where no Witch would ever be able to follow her. It was too dangerous, for she had been placed right in the middle of Darkness territory, lorded over by a being so powerful no one had really seen him.
Joanna really didn't care at this point. She had gone to college over at the local place, and lived with people who she considered a bit tipsy, but normal. Every month her roommates hit the bar, calling Joanna to pick them up at close to 3 in the morning. Being normal, she hadn't minded. That is, until they had begun to ask her to join her.
"C'mon, Jo. You'll have fun!" they had said, trying still to get her to go. It was times like this that her sun symbol on her left had had felt unusually warm.
"No thanks. You all go and have a good time. Someone has to pick you guys up when you all are drunk," had been all she had said, half teasing.
And how wrong she had been in the end, for of all the people she had to be trapped in this city with, it had to be only person who could ever stop her.
