Pairing: Joe Simpson/Simon Yates
Summary: RPS. It's not true.
In 1985, early on the descent of Siula Grande in the Andes, Joe Simpson fell and seriously injured both legs. Climbing partner Simon Yates heroically managed to lower him almost to the base of the mountain, until an unforseen ice cliff left Joe dangling on the rope and Simon, impossibly, trying to hold his weight on a collapsing belay stance. Simon, as Joe would have done, cut the rope.
Joe survived. Three years later he published his book, Touching the Void, about what happened next: in 2003 the book was filmed under the same title.
