For myself, I think I would like... mmm, I think 'redeem' is a bit strong of a word, but... I would like some sort of forward motion (and when I say "I would like", I don't mean "SO PLAY HIM LIKE THIS", by any stretch, just, what I would enjoy seeing in like, a fic, or what I'm going to believe, etc etc); as you say, he does at least make a tiny itty bitty baby step of acknowledging that there are consequences and he's going to have to deal with them, and I think he could probably inchy-squinchy his way forward from there. But it would be slow, and he'd probably never be, like, a magical happy person who loves the whole world.

But I do think he'd have to move forward, if he were going to... stay alive, which the P4 kids were very adamant on! It's not like he CAN really ...avert his eyes and look away this time. The whole prison thing would be a big part of that, I think -- it's a very immediate, physical, constant consequence, isn't it? So there's that.

Tl;dr OH FANDOM, but I think your ideas are good.

YES EXACTLY. I still get a little "ehhhh" when "redeem" comes up, especially in conjunction with Adachi, but as a whole I don't really like throwing that word out a lot for the most part. I do think he's someone who can move forward, which is a really, really good way of putting it. The kids were adamant on it, but it does seem like he accepts it on some level so. idk. THERE WERE BABY STEPS THERE! It's a small thing, but it's like he's starting to at least look forward. Even if he's still a dick.

I think it's that, for me, "redeem" has this... undertone of forgiving and/or erasing whatever wrongs performed and... I don't really see how that's... possible. With Adachi. I mean, it ISN'T like he was being controlled, or even particularily crazy, at the beginning (in the moo-ha-ha sense; I think probably someone who has such an utter failure of understanding that OTHER PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE TOO is probably kinda crazy to begin with)

But iirc, when he goes after Yamano, it's because 'you led me on (somehow...) by being attractive but now you're having an affair even though you have no idea who I even am, because we've never met' (and this is still her fault); this is not a redeemable mindset. Also, when he forces himself on her, at that point, he doesn't know he can push her into the TV, does he? So... what exactly was he going to do to her? I can thing of some things and they aren't very nice.

mte. Whenever fandom brings it up again, I'm just going to point to this thread and roll my eyes at them.

IT'S TOTALLY COOL, I completely encourage rambling, especially on characters that are vague as hell. I really love reading other people's interpretations and whatnot.

Really, every day I am just more and more glad that I don't have any actual contact with the fandom; P4 is sort of... full of ISSUES and I don't really want to see what fandom at large does with them :x

I stopped reading the comm after awhile, but the P4 chan occasionally links stuff and I stare on in horror. I think I actually started writing that massive essay-ish thing after a certain post had me clawing at my eyes.

It involved something like how we should all feel sorry for Adachi! OH POOR BABY.

I mean, maybe this is true. But he needed a girlfriend like, 10 years ago. >->; And that's assuming he wasn't always a giant dick. But he clearly has been for some time. It's part of his world view, now, and those don't... develop overnight.
