Right now we're staying with our first couchsurfing acquaintance in St. Paul. Davi had narrowed down a group of potential hosts for me and I decided that I'd like to stay with the older couple. We've been staying with college-age kids pretty much exclusively, so the change is nice. Judy and Ken are Canadian - they're only in the States because Judy is back in school to become a chiropractor. They're very nice people, very considerate, and we seem to have a lot of interests in common. We got in yesterday afternoon and are staying through Sunday morning.
Their computer had been really screwed up, so Davi took it apart last night and finished fixing it this morning. Judy's really glad to have it up and running again even though she lost a bunch of pictures in the process. Davi's going to give her some tips and tricks for managing her digital pictures... there's a lot of good chi in this house.
In addition to traveling and meeting new people, we've been visiting schools. Davi's been doing interviews at most places, too. Anyway, I have come to the realization that I can't stand the cold. It's not that I'm lacking Vitamin D, but rather that once I get cold, I tend to stay cold. I wish I could figure out how to improve my circulation.
Well, most "good" schools are in the north. As are most well-known schools. Or something. I'm not quite sure why or how this happens, but it seems to be at least somewhat true. So far on this trip, I've really liked Hampshire College (in Amherst, MA) and Oberlin College (in Oberlin, OH), but both of those places get COLD!
I can take Virginia winters, and this past winter in Bethlehem wasn't bad, but today at Carleton (in Northfield, MN), I felt like my face was going to freeze off... And it only gets colder.
I think that I'm going to have to consider the North Carolina schools on my list and the Claremont schools a little more seriously. And Hendrix (in Conway, AR) made it to my final typed list as well.
In order of Most Liked to Least Liked (where same line = same level of like/ dislike):
Hampshire, Oberlin
Sarah Lawrence
Carlton
Kalamazoo, Hiram
HOWEVER, it's COLD at every one of them!!! It's funny, on my list of things to look for in schools when I got down to internet research (yes, I spent way too much time on this over the summer), I listed "weather" last. Today I think I moved it up to the top.
So, tomorrow we look at Macalaster and I think I finally found a mitten pattern that doesn't require that I buy any more supplies. My fingerless glove (to be convertible into a mitten) is too big in the palm and the two fingers that I've finished cut off the circulation in those two fingers. I've been trying to make convertible gloves for nearly two years now. *sigh*
