1. Could Scully have better prevented Melissa's death? Would Melissa be alive if this was in the age of cell phones?
see this is what always got me....because it was in the age of cellphones, right? Mulder and Scully have been using cellphones since season one. But that aside, even if lets say Melissa didn't have a cellphone it never made sense to me that Scully would just assume she would get the message and stay at her place. Of COURSE they were going to miss each other en route. So yes this has always been one of the plot points that never really made too much sense to me.
ITA--why did she think Melissa would get the message? It's not like Scully had a lot of choices in the moment, but that wasn't such a smart move.
While cell phones might have existed, really few "regular folks" had them at the time--my family (early-adopters in most technological innovations) didn't get a cell phone until at least 1998, and then it was just one to keep in the car in case of emergency. Pagers and cell phones and things were for doctors, cops, and drug dealers, not hippy-dippy sister types :). Plus I'm pretty sure Melissa would have thought cell phones disturb your aura or something.
Yeah, the likelihood of running into someone who is in another car is pretty slim. I know Skinner intercepted Scully as she was going to find Melissa, but Scully forgot about Melissa pretty quickly. Had it been me with my sister, no matter how badly I wanted to find out what Skinner was up to, I would have told him that my sister comes first.
3. Blessing Way Chant Ceremony-- awesome or silly?
Actual Ceremony And Its Functionings: AWESOME.
Chris Carter Deciding He Can Appropriate Native American Religious Rituals For His Own Special Purposes, And Really Working The Hell Out Of The Magic Indian Stereotype In This Arc: fucked up, and makes it look silly by the end.
I really do like the whole Navajo theme running through this three-parter, and most of the time I think it works. However, there's something about the floating in space image that puts it a little over the top for me. What about it do you think is silly?
