This is the poem I will read (hopefully) at my grandfather's funeral tomorrow:
Today I lost my friend...
With a gentle but assured and outspoken voice...
We talked about anything and everything...
Of life and love, past and future, of happiness and sorrow.
He was my ear to bend.
And his laughter and passion filled every conversation.
Today I lost my hero...
With stories that books are written about...
His service as a marine was with dignity and virtue.
Someone I deeply admired, respected, and held in such high regard.
He was the soldier I was honored to know.
And no medal could ever capture the gift of his loyalty and bravery.
Today I lost my grandfather...
With a lifetime of endless experiences...
He taught me the important things in life.
From history and politics, to compassion and honesty...
He was my teacher of infinite subjects.
And his knowledge far surpassed any classroom I could ever attend.
Today I lost my heart...
With each broken piece holding an irreplaceable memory...
I don't want to forget him.
Every moment spent with him was a blessing, and meant the world to me.
He was the greatest man I have ever met.
And I love him more than any word or thought could ever express.
