It startles him when Amy quietly says it, not just for the fact that it comes from out of nowhere.
"Everyday, traveling with you, is a gift."
His head snaps around and his eyes meets her's and he can see that she sincerely means it. He sees Amelia in her eyes in that moment, all that childish wonder, admiration and belief of her eight year old self and it makes his hearts ache more deeply than she can possibly know.
Out of the corner of his eye, he sees Rory and he sees the guarded expression in comparison to Amy's open one. He knows that Rory's closer to the truth of his life in his thinking and isn't clouded by the amazement and the thrill. He sees things for what they are and he sees through the Doctor's facade' more acutely than most of his past companions.
He smiles sadly at Amy and murmurs a, "Thank you." and then he walks around the console. He doesn't see Amy's confused expression, but he does see Rory's sharp eyes trained on him as he approaches. Rory might be a lot of things, but the one thing the Doctor knows he most certainly isn't is stupid.
When he reaches Rory, he leans over and speaks in a whispered tone, "It's not a gift, Rory Williams, but a curse."
He knows Rory will pick up both the words and the unspoken request and as he expects, Rory nods his head firmly in recognition and response.
'Be there when she finds out....'
The Doctor walks away and retreats up the stairs.
