Joey’s Dancing Advice to Lance: ‘Don’t Suck’ They shared the stage together for years as part of N Sync. Now, Dancing with the Stars veteran Joey Fatone has some words of wisdom for newcomer Lance Bass.
“Don’t suck, don’t embarrass me, I told him,” Fatone told PEOPLE at Sunday’s annual TV Guide Emmy party in Hollywood. “If he embarrasses me, I’ll kick his a-.”
Even though the former boy banders danced for millions of people live on stage during ‘N Sync’s heyday, Bass still has nerves about moving gracefully in front of Dancing’s vast TV audience, Fatone, 31, says.
“We’ll see [how he does], I know he’s very nervous about it,” Fatone said. “He really wants to make sure he leaves a good impression and does really well. It’s all riding on his shoulders in that sense. We’ll see what happens.”

READY, SET, CHA CHA CHA!
This week, my partner Lacey Schwimmer and I are doing two dances - the quickstep and the cha cha. For the cha cha, there are a lot of tricks that I am worried about. As the one who choreographs our routines, Lacey likes to throw in harder steps every day. She just gets me, though. She'll always say 'we have that down, let's make it harder!' There is one move called the “wee-waa” that she made up when she was seven-years-old; she always finds a way to put it in everything. So, we are doing the wee-wa this week, and her legs go completely underneath mine. I need to lift my legs at a certain time or else she is going to take me out!
MUSICAL MEMORIES
I was a member of a show choir called Attache in high school - lots of spirit fingers! - which was closer to ballroom dancing than what we did in *NYSNC. Growing up in *NSYNC, the guys always used to make fun of me because I was the worst dancer. I really couldn’t dance. When the guys started the group, I didn’t think we were going to be dancing - that was never talked about. I just thought I was going to be a bass singer. And then they were like 'C’mon, we're going to dance rehearsal.' I had no rhythm whatsoever, but I faked it really well so that was good for me! That's the good thing about this show: no one's expecting us to be perfect. That's what it's all about, showing the progress in these celebrities who are doing something they've never done before.
TALL ORDER
The shoes I have to wear for the cha cha hurt! I'm basically wearing high heels. But my outfits are cool. I'm not that embarrassed to wear them - even though the pants are a little tighter and the shirts are shorter than I want. I'm not that fashionable anyway, but the outfits I wore in *NSYNC were not my fault! We never got to choose what we wore then. [The band] was such a machine at that time that we didn't know what we'd be wearing until five minutes before we went on. There were a lot of fashion no-nos, but the DWTS wardrobe department is [great] and they work non-stop to make masterpieces for us.
JUDGE JITTERS
Len [Goodman]'s the one I'm more scared of. He's the more technical judge, and technicality is what's going to hurt me - I'm not limber - and he's going to expect more out of me. I think he'll compare me to Joey [Fatone], so that means I have to be that much better.
