Dear lord. Where do I even start? Oh, wait. PSA from your friendly whatshername. ALL PEOPLE PRESENT AT THE BIRTH OF THE RESTAURANT AU, PLEASE STATE YOUR NAMES IN COMMENTS TO THIS POST. Thank you. And this recap turned out very long. Take this is a warning.
Arrivals
-
_ducks joined me on my train an hour into the journey. - we were so bored on the stupidly long journey, we spent a gleeful hour writing out room assignments and decorating pieces of paper. For the record,
_ducks draws a mean Chris Kirkpatrick with a marker.
- we got hopelessly lost while trying to find the bus stop at the end station.
- luckily we managed to spot the others --
ephemera_pop,
randomling,
saffronra,
urbanoceanix, along with
turloughishere -- from across the road, and Saff's uber geography-fu helped us find the bus stop. On the other side of the station.
- we must've scarred a local or two on the 40-minute bus ride with our conversation, but we finally got off at the right stop, and walked through the freezing wind and rain to the cottage, where
nopseud and
turps33 were already waiting for us. The rest appeared soon after, and hugs and greetings were exchanged as we emptied the minibus of goodies.
- I tell you, it was so much better this time round since I'd already spent the last Camp Sparkle with majority of the campers, and it was SO GOOD to catch up with people.
Foooood
-
ninjetti75 and
msktrnanny had stuffed their suitcases full of goodies, and people brought various sugar sources with them from their home countries. We ended up filling a large table and the top of a cupboard with sugar, sugar, and more sugar
- a TON of PIXIE STIX. \o/
- a box of purple bunny Peeps that were used as an illustration of sexbots
- Reese's! (cue people telling
kira_j about how I apparently killed AJ)
- blow pops!
bubbleforest and I reenacted the footage with Brian and Nick and the blowpops at some point, because we are just that cool.
- Twinkies, which alternately made people hysterical and/or completely icked out.
- Oreos
- Pop Tarts
- Hershey's kisses
- another ton of Coke, dear lord. I swear,
ninjetti75's veins must have Diet Coke running through them or something.
- I love Camp Sparkle, because it proves that we don't need booze to have a damn good time. We got high on laughter and sugar and each other's company, and that was probably the best thing about it all.
Okay, I started off writing this in prose form, then switched to point form like last year's recap, and now I'm pretty much going to just talk about the GLEE that was last weekend.
Let's see. Me,
fadedsouls,
rikes,
adelate,
bubbleforest,
iconis,
_ducks and
saba1789 were in the BEST room ever, the Slumber Party Room (hereafter known as SP Room). A better and funner room has never existed. It was 8 single beds with one bizarre configuration of cupboards in the middle, and with a very high ceiling. The house we were in used to be stables, and thanks to the weird configuration of it, this meant that everyone in the SP Room could hear whatever footage it was being played in the living room next to us. Not only that, but there were two bathrooms in the big hall/loft thing that the SP Room was also in that had practically open ceilings. Basically, everyone could hear everyone else. I showered while the Boys serenaded Inconsolable to me, and another night *NSYNC were warbling It's Gonna Be Me as I washed my hair. At one point while I was in one bathroom, I was having a conversation with either
adelate or
fadedsouls, who was in the other bathroom. Camp Sparkle: Not for the self-conscious. *g*
Anyhoo, the SP Room? Stayed up until at least 4am the first night reading printed popslash stories and discussing fic ideas. This is one of my favourite things about fannish gatherings. Having so many slashers together in one place just BREEDS awesome fic ideas like no other event. It was truly awesome and inspiring. And then...oh god. Sometime ago
msktrnanny had promised to give
rikes her *NSYNC marionettes, and well. They came to live in our room. ANYONE that has seen the marionettes up close can attest to how creepy they are, and dude, that first night, only Chris got out of his box.
This picture was taken from the viewpoint of my bed last Friday night. Yes. My. Bed. Chris Kirkpatrick wanted to EAT MY SOUL. At some point
rikes took pity on me and took the rest out, which resulted in some
very,
very amusing pictures.
Friday night was also the night when
msktrnanny attempted to read out last year's Five Words story. Poor KC kept on flipping back and trying to figure out the logistics of it, and had to be constantly reminded that in this house, logic did not exist. At one point she gave me a kiss for writing what she thought were the most logical five words in it ("Then Lynn and Jane died."), but it's mostly a blur of hilarity and people crying with laughter.
kira_j was seriously confused, this being her first exposure to sparkly crack of any sort, but during the weekend she really got into the spirit of things.
Saturday started off with an intense and extremely interesting discussion on American things vs European/British things, mostly centred on how you can tell when a story is written by a Brit person. I stuck around for a while, but opted for a nap instead, after which I tried to get some schoolwork done. There was this one couch near the projector wall that was SO COMFORTABLE. It was horrible for sitting in to watch stuff, but perfect for hours and hours of reading.
Saturday afternoon saw the premiere of
ninjetti75's Sparkly Crack game. It started off as a sparkly version of Clue/Cluedo based on the floorplan of the house from last year, but evolved into this super intricate RPG that confused the hell out of everyone at first. Some people went off to watch bandom footage while this was happening, but in the end
msktrnanny (Nick),
iconis (Joey),
fadedsouls (Kevin),
_ducks (Justin),
pensnest (Lance),
bubbleforest (Brian),
adelate (Howie),
randomling (JC) and gamemaster
ninjetti75 (Chris) all joined in. I was very amused when the
AJ player card came flying my way when Josh threw it at me. KC gave up after a while, but the rest of us pressed on, and it soon evolved into the most fantastically cracked out game/story I'd ever heard. The scary thing was how accurate it was to real life. For instance,
Justin got the most points, and in one single turn managed to make the entire universe conform to his own reality twice. AJ ended up wearing a leather coat, a whip, and a cock ring. Brian turned into a sex maniac. JC got pregnant. Chris killed Aaron and Paris with booze on two separate occasions, and AJ whipped Howie (as foreplay?). I could go on and on, but lord. It was SO MUCH FUN.
Sunday saw me getting up with a bad cold, contracted from someone or something the previous two days, so I nipped down to the shops for some throat stuff with
fadedsouls, who was wearing her awesomely good/bad old-school BSB tshirt. There was also a FANTASTIC discussion on betaing and writing stories, and it was so good to just sit at a table and listen to everyone talk about their writing processes and how much they agonised over stories.
turloughishere made an extremely competent moderator after we realised that everyone was talking over everyone else, and just. I was so HAPPY sitting there listening to everyone. The discussion was also responsible for making several people (including
adelate) feel like writing again, which was just an added bonus to a wonderful discussion.
At some point
bubbleforest,
fadedsouls,
_ducks,
kira_j,
msktrnanny and I all piled into the living room to watch some of the Pearlman footage that was auctioned off on ebay that I'd managed to acquire. It was KC's first time watching the BSB demo tape, and I have never seen such a horrified expression on someone while watching the demo, nor have I ever seen anyone insist so much that the blond midget dancing next to Kevin was really Aaron Carter in disguise. *g* We also ended up watching some home footage of the making of We've Got It Goin' On, and everyone ended up having the damn bassline stuck in our head for HOURS. That night I got an awesome manicure from
nopsued (nails like AJ!) -- who gives the BEST hand massages ever, omg -- while watching BSB's Homecoming concert. Mmmmmm, floorhumping. Though I have never seen a room clear out as quickly as it did when Howie did his solo song. Poor thing. I think
nopseud kept on wanting to smack me though, as I kept giggling non-stop in reaction to the joyousness that was AJ basically doing a whole pole dance routine. Mmmmm.
Now, a word about footage. There is nothing, nothing, like watching footage with people that get it. During the weekend we managed to polish off Around the World (Kevin: *drooooooone*), PopOd, MSG, BSB's Homecoming concert, and Justin's FutureSex/LoveShow, as well as bits of assorted footage. For the record,
rikes,
saba1789 and I are starting a "His little FACE!" support group for people that cannot help but shout that phrase out during Justin footage. According to
iconis, we were squealing so loudly during FSLS that the people in the kitchen just burst into laughter whenever they heard us. And oh, OH. The Reel *NSYNC. There is nothing like a room full of people clapping and laughing in pure glee when the airport clip starts, NOTHING in the world can compare to the wondrousness of 20 people downing 465737662 Pixie Stix at one go. And we had
fadedsouls and
kira_j as our Reel *NSYNC virgins! It was so awesome. I was so happy I was amongst my own people, people that laugh and scream along with you at the same places.
Monday morning
_ducks,
rikes,
saba1789 and I all set off for a walk in Lyndhurst. Along the way we encountered sweet shops, penis-shaped biscuits, and PONIES. ♥
ephemera_pop had previously warned us of the dangers of feral ponies in the area, but the one that came up to the fence was extremely docile and let
saba1789 pet him for a long time. SO CUTE.
The Lava Lamp recital, courtesy of
msktrnanny. Oh my lord. Everyone in the room (save for Pen's Other Half) had heard/read the story multiple times, and I swear, everyone must've shot Pen's Other Half glances throughout the entire thing to see what his reaction to "turgid manhood" would be. We were CRYING with laughter, and KC had to stop at every other sentence just so people could laugh and catch their breath, it was that hilarious. Pen's Other Half, to his credit, survived the reading, and even seemed amused by it at several points, so major kudos to him. After that I had to go to bed early and fell asleep to the sounds of footage. You know you've been in fandom too long when you can only just make out the sounds of the footage amidst the laughter, and then be able to positively identify it as footage of *NSYNC playing basketball where Justin gets horribly left out of the ass grabbing. I'm just saying.
I had to wake up stupidly early to catch my train on Tuesday morning. I'd already said my goodbyes before I went to bed the previous night, but still managed to miss some people. :(
msktrnanny was a star and waited for the bus with me, and after travelling for the entire day I finally got back to York. Since then it's been nonstop insanity for me. So much so that I haven't even had time for the sparkly withdrawal to hit yet. I am also tired as tired can be, gah. That said, this year was seriously bittersweet for me, because I went to Camp Sparkle knowing that I wouldn't be back in the UK for at least the next few years while I get my life sorted out back home. I tried not to think about it while I was still in Lyndhurst, but it really only hit me when I got back to York and there was no one to squee to. *sigh*
There is so much more that I could say about camp Sparkle, but I need to thank everyone for such a wonderful weekend.
_ducks: Still one of the awesomest people I've met on lj, and she now works near me too! I'll have to hit her up for lunch next week. This sparkly woe thing is no good. She is also one of the best train companions to have, and is witty in a way that I can only ever hope to be.
adelate: Fellow Bassez sister-in-arms! Always so full of squee. I got used to falling asleep to the sounds of her giggling or awwwing as she read fic on her laptop, and miss her so, so much.
bubbleforest: Oh Mette, what would I ever do without you? She's still gorgeous, still so so generous, and all around awesome. She probably said it the best in her recap: we can talk about random BSB shit and still get each other. I MISS YOU SO MUCH.
ephemera_pop: Is still as awesome as ever. I'd already seen her about three weeks ago in London, but you can never get enough Ephemera. She's so smart and grounded and so affectionate. ♥
fadedsouls: It was my first time meeting Aceetha, but we just got each other. I think the BSB craziness helped, definitely. ;) But oh, it felt so awesome just to talk about random footage together, and have each other just understand what we were talking about.
iconis: She took some very unflattering pictures of me at some point, but Outi high on Pixy Stix is A THING OF JOY AND WONDER, and she so so loving and open in a way I could never be.
kira_j: Our newcomer that had everyone wondering where the hell she had been for the last few years! She knew stuff about all the boybanders AND was cool as all hell. And she only lives an hour away from me! Whee! I will have to drag her down for a weekend of footage at some point. And major kudos to her for being plonked into sparkly crackiness completely blind and then gleefully participating in it. :D
msktrnanny: I finally got to meet KC, and she is so, so AWESOME. Half her suitcase was American sugar products for the entire group, and her readings of the Five Words and Lava Lamp stories are the stuff of LEGEND. She also needs to write the damn restaurant AU that she came up with on the spot during a discussion. *REMINDS LIKE WOAH*
ninjetti75: Josh put in so much effort into the Sparkly Cluedo game, it was seriously astonishing. But other than that he's just so full of yay and was a joy to talk to.
nopseud: She still cooks the most amazing food ever, and now she has added manicures and massages to the list of things she does so well. She could always be counted on for fantastic story ideas, but my favourite has to be the idea for an alternate video for As Long As You Love Me that Pen and her came up with, involving a tattooed female inmate that just broke out of jail. GENIUS.
pensnest: Pen is always so, so kind and generous and has the best laugh ever. She did such a good job of organising and making sure that everyone was having a good time. Her Death Cake is still the best cake EVER.
randomling: Another ljer new to me, but just as awesome as everyone else. She played JC during the testing phase of Sparkly Crack, and made everyone roar with laughter whenever she played her hand. Pink steamroller FTW!
rikes: She still has the cutest accent ever, and I can always always count on her for a Justin squee session. At one point I think we were at the kitchen table pointing at a picture of Justin in Lance's book and going "His little face!" at each other. And I love how she's always up for a mutual squee/lust session over Justin, because we just get each other. YAY.
saba1789: For the record, Saba makes the warmest, most comfortable person to snuggle up to EVER. She's always so, so affectionate and awesome, and she still gives the best hugs.
saffronra: She is still cooler than you, and I was extremely sad to see her go on Sunday night. :( No matter, she's coming with
_ducks and I to watch BSB in London, yay!!!
turloughishere: Did the best discussion moderating ever, and still loves Kevin despite the amount of Kevin phobia that seemed to be plaguing the house. There is nothing wrong with Kevin!
turps33: I see Terri way too little, and hugs from her are the best thing. I wish I could've talked to her more. I didn't even get to hug her goodbye! :(
urbanoceanix: Another person I saw too little of and didn't have enough time to talk to, but Nic is just so cool and smart and articulate, and she comes with her own toe socks too.
Conclusion: I miss all of you SO FUCKING MUCH.
