Just finished writing the exit music for "Barnum"... okay... attempt at a description:

a septet: Trumpet, Alto Sax, Bari Sax, Rhodes Keyboard, Bass 1, Bass 2, and Drums.

I know, very Spinal Tap: "On lead bass... on rhythm bass... on Bari sax... on bass keyboard..." you get the picture.

I took the melody from "Colors of my Life" and tried to give it a Herbie Hancock/Sly and the family stone kind of funk feel. I streamlined the chords a bit so we can jam on it easier, and made two anti-parallel (stepwise, if you will) baselines... we'll see how that part of it goes.

Its way trippy. Word. Last year when I wrote the exit music to West Side Story I remember being like "okay, I'll write one real one, and I'll screw around with the other one". Thus was born the 4/4 Maria and "Maria Revisited" (a frantic version in 5/4). This time the music just the way it is is kind of lame, so I had to really make the new thing wacked out. But hell, its better than my other ideas: a klezmer/polka version of "Sucker", a Bossa Nova of "Style" in 7/4, or a ska version of "Come Follow the Band". So the funk version of "Colors of my life" is much better than any of those I suppose.

KETIH: Bring your bass monday. I'm thinking you and Dawson on bass, with Eldridge covering the Piano part, Chris on Bari, Owen on alto, and me on tpt.

Other than that, I've had a pretty lazy day. Worked on my Senior Project, writing this "Barnum" thing, Third Wing stuff, and took the dogs for a walk. Got more mail from Notre Dame. In fact, I've gotten 4 pieces of mail in the past week.

Nice. Peace.
