To live under despair with the knowledge of an inevitable end... such is the fate of man. Such is the tragedy that unfolds here. Fate is the bearer of cruelty, and death is indiscriminate, just as pain and loss are inevitable now.
Yet the End can only be prevented with understanding of this despair, and the will to ignore what destiny has dealt. Are the limits for hope too strained now? Is the weight of the fruit of knowledge too heavy on man's resolve?
Perhaps, again, the End can be avoided. Perhaps not.
