1408
Rating: 3.5 outof 4 (Next movie we will switch to a different ratings system!)
What it's about: Based on Steven King's second story in his audio book short story collection, Blood and Smoke, 1408 is the story of a writer who writes Travel Guides to Huanted Locations. Ever the sceptic, the main character, played by John Cusack, stays in room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel, and for the first time is confronted with a real taste of evil.
What I felt they got right: This movie was scary! I screamed at least twice (real screams), and jumped in my chair several times. Even thought they used every cliched gag in the book to get you to feel the creapyness of the room, it somehow all comes together and manages to work. Interwoven in the plot of the hotel room, is the main character's struggle to get over the loss of his child. This plays such a large part of the story that it helps to ground the viewer in the reality that the main character is a real person, who suffers just like the rest of us.
What I felt they got wrong: Hmm, I can't really think of much that they did wrong. This movie will creep you out, and that is what they were going for. At first I was a bit worried, King has had some good movies based on his stories and quite a few bad ones. That and the main character is a writer, which always makes me think, "Again?"
Where it's going: There probably won't be a sequal, but I feel this movie will do well enough in box office sales. As always, King will continue to write stories and movie makers will continue to make films of them.
Final Words: Go see this movie! This is one you shouldn't miss. The PG=13 rating guarentees that you won't have to worry too much about the gore and violence, so if you see it don't be expecting a gore-fest.
